Logo Hunter vs. Missing the Net - Fight!

Zetterberg is usually the Wings king of missed shots, this past season was the first time Franzen has taken the crown from him. Although as much as Franzen misses the net he had the 3rd best shooting % of the entire team behind only Hudler and Flip and he had the 2nd most shots on goal behind only Zetterberg. His amount of misses has a lot to do with the amount of shots he takes.

Why is it Doan OR Semin? Why not both?

Just like we were going to be done when Yzerman retired...We may have a new superstar blossoming in Sweden right now. Our prospect pool is ranked among the best in the league despite drafting project players with huge upside over more certain NHL talent. Who knows what they will bring to the table, its not like we saw Datsyuk or Zetterberg coming beforehand. Tootoo put up more pts last year than anyone in our bottom 6, he is EXACTLY what Babcock asked for this offseason, he is 100% going to be in our line-up on opening night. He'll have to play his way off the roster not onto it. Same with Cleary, Miller and Eaves. Brunner hasn't played a single NHL game and Nyquist still has waiver exemptions left, both can be sent down without exposure to waivers so for them to even make the roster they'll have to outplay several players to get a roster spot. Doan has reportedly been offered 7.5 a season and Semin made 6.7 last year and will want a raise if he's taking a short term deal. You can kiss and defenceman goodbye if we sign both. We couldn't call up cheap prospects in the case of injuries as your roster leaves only 300k in space. That's less than the league minimum, Teams keep a 1 mil float for situations like that.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

Not to defend Howson as he's clearly a terrible GM, but that's a pretty good package for a 70-80 pt player. He got more than any return I can think of for a single player. I think the only valid complaint is that he was likely offered more and turned it down because he didn't want to trade him within the division.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

True, although I believe once you waive your NTC to move to a new team it is no longer valid once traded. I think the Rangers can trade him to whoever they want now. I could be wrong though.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

He is on the Rangers roster because they traded for him. He inked an 8 year deal with Columbus and had the final 6 years of that deal traded to NY. He didn't sign anything new with the Rangers, and can't until the final year of his current contract.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

really? Amazing that he has never reached 50 in a season then. No he didn't, that is his contract he had with Columbus, he didn't sign any new deals and can't for another 5 years. You don't get to sign a new deal just because you were traded.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

Question for the people who think Howson didn't get enough in return. When was the last time someone was traded for a better package than this?
  8. I thought he justified his rankings quite well with this response right here.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

They have a great 1st line, but after that I think their quality drops off significantly at least at forward, their D-corps is very strong as is their goalie though. I think their offense is tied to how well Nash performs there. Nash - Richards - Gaborik Hagelin - Boyle - Callahan Pyatt - Kreider - Rupp Haley - Stepan - Asham Halpern Staal - Girardi McDonagh - Sauer Bickel - Del Zotto Lundqvist Biron

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

I think Columbus got the better of the deal personally. The best part is that now people will have to stop making excuses for Nash when he still manages to put up less than 80 pts a season.

Why is it Doan OR Semin? Why not both?

Pav's age has no bearing on Hollands job. He isn't building the team to try and win for one player, his job is to keep the team competitve long term. I have a bunch of questions about your line-up there, 1. Do you really think Nyquist and Brunner are going to get roster spots while Cleary and Tootoo sit? 2. What happened to Miller, Eaves, Emmerton, Mursak? 3. How do you suppose we get Doan or Semin to take a salary as low as 5 million when both are reportedly getting better offers already? Lifetime deals maybe? 4. Signing Doan or Semin to deals at that low of a cost will mean long term deals, what do we do next year when Flip, Howard, Brunner and White all need to be re-signed? 5. What do we do if we get into injury trouble, (Specifically a rash of short-term injuries), we won't have enough space to make a call up. 6. What do we do if the cap is lowered in CBA negotiations? Those are enough reasons why its extremely unlikely we sign both. We should be ecstatic with 1 of them and a defenceman.
  12. Hockey's Future ranks the Wings at #10 Hockey Prospectus ranks the WIngs at #3 I think both of them are better sources when it comes to hockey than ESPN.

    Bouwmeester opinions? Potential trades? *merged*

He's a more durable Kyle Quincey with a bigger paycheck.
  14. And on top of that, if they match, they owe him 27 million in the first 366 days of the contract. If they traded him that would be an expensive year of Weber. I think if they match he's a Pred for the rest of his career.

    Semin

I hope we sit on some of the money. I still want them to sign a top 6 forward and trade for a defenceman, but it would be nice to have a good cushion should the cap drop after the CBA negotiations. I figure there will be at least a handful of teams dumping salary to get under the cap should the cap drop and no amnesty clause be instituted.

What Should Be Addressed in the New CBA?

I'm not sure how I'd word the rule, but I think something needs to be done with the way Philadelphia is using LTIR. When someone like Pronger announces that he'll never play again, he should be retired, not put on LTIR so they can use his cap space on someone else. I think its against the spirit of the rule, and also drives insurance costs up league wide since they are paying the lions share of his salary not the Flyers.
  17. Maybe Neither of us have any idea if other GM's would match this offer. I suspect the # that wouldn't is higher than those that would. I don't think its his caphit that is the problem (its quite reasonable actually, I miscalculated his age at the end of his contract so his cap hit is under 8) Its the bonus money paid upfront that would cause a lot of GM's to balk. My point is that signing someone to an offersheet is not a better or cheaper strategy than trading or signing someone as a UFC. its impossible to sign someone to an offer-sheet that won't be matched without overpaying in some form. Otherwise his former team will match every time.
  18. If a player is bought out his former team is responsible for 2/3 his contract if he is older than 26 or 1/3 of his contract if under 26. The team then takes a cap hit for twice the amount of time remaining on the contract. Calculating the actual cap hit is complicated you can read about it here Using Eaves as an example, he's getting 1.2 million a season from the Wings on his new deal and still receiving a portion of his salary from Boston on top of it.
  19. Holland was one of 3 GM's when they traded for Shanahan FYI. Him Develanno and Bowman were all listed as interim GM's for that season, but I agree that was a pretty ballsy move, as was dealing for Hasek and Chelios. Did you ever wonder why the Wings got the better of every one of those trades? its by refusing to overpay in a trade, he's smart enough not to give up more than he's getting just for the sake of mixing things up on his team. I think you're overreacting on the "lowballing" to use your term when it comes to FA's as well. He didn't low-ball Suter, he didn't submit the best offer, but there is a difference between being outbid and lowballing. (besides it didn't matter what he offered, Suter and Parise were going to Minnesota regardless, they used other franchises to drive the price up that's the only reason the Wings were even involved) I know he had discussions with Weber but it sounds like Philly signed him to an offer sheet before the Wings even formally submitted one, so I don't think you can call that a lowball either. I agree that Holland needs to make a move this off-season, but considering the amount of players we've been linked too, and the # of trade talks he's been involved in, I think its only a matter of time before a trade is announced. I too hope its for Ryan.
  20. The structure of the contract is to prevent Nashville from matching. Signing bonuses have to be paid immediately, so as soon as they match they'd owe Weber 13 million, with another 1 million paid out over the course of the season. Then exactly 365 days from the time of the signing they'd owe him another 13 million. So in the first calendar year of the contract they would pay out 27 million dollars to Weber. With the threat of a work stoppage looming, its a tough decision for a cash strapped franchise to commit 27 million in a year where they may not have any income. Then as others have mentioned, if the cap is lowered and salaries are rolled back Weber would still be owed all of his signing bonus money.
  21. They didn't just lose Suter, they also lost Radulov, Kostitsyn, Bouillion, Tootoo and now possibly even Weber, and didn't replace any of them. I wouldn't say either the Pred or the Wings have gotten better this year but the Wings have at least plugged up some of the holes.
  22. I think Weber is hoping they don't match, but realistically the Predators need to spend a ton of money just to get to the cap floor. The bonus money will hurt but not matching could mean the death of the franchise.
  23. They definitely did if Nashville doesn't match, I still think they will.
  24. The Wings lost a 42 year old Lidstrom, he wasn't anywhere near the defenceman last year as he was in his 20's and 30's. Stuart was downright awful in that playoff series managing to be on the ice for almost every goal against in the whole series. The Predators lost their #1 and #2 defencemen at the height of their primes. They also lost their best offensive player in Radulov, another key deadline acquisition in Kostitsyn, the highest scoring player in their bottom 6 and their #4 defenceman. To date they haven't replaced any of them. I don't think either of our franchises are really in a position to be laughing to be honest.
  25. Maybe he does, but Holmgren's balls to the wall strategy hasn't won him anything but the adulation of some fans. Holland's method may not make him a lot of fans, but its won multiple Stanley Cups.
