Jimmy Howard is an UFA this summer and if the Wings want to try and re-sign him, he is due for a huge salary increase from his $2.25M. Howard is currently the third lowest-paid goalie in the Western Conference (to LAK's Quick for 2013 and to PHX's Smith). Rinne is the highest paid NHL goaltender at a whopping $7M (bumped up from his previous $4M/year contract), and Holtby is the lowest paid NHL goaltender at an entry level $637K. Do you re-sign Howard? If so, how much (though this may depend on length of years)? Which starting goalies do you find overpaid? 2013 Salaries Rinne (NSH) $7M Lundqvist (NYR) $6.87M Price (MTL) $6.5M Ward (CAR) $6.3M Miller (BUF) $6.25M Backstrom (MIN) $6M Kipprusoff (CGY) $5.83M Bryzgalov (PHI) $5.67M Luongo (VAN) $5.33M Fleury (PITT) $5M Brodeur (NJ) $4.5M Hiller (ANA) $4.5M Pavelec (WPG) $3.9M Niemi (SJ) $3.8M Halak (STL) $3.75M Lehtonen (DAL) $3.55M / $5.9M (2013-14) Rask (BOS) $3.5M Dubnyk (EDM) $3.5M Anderson (OTT) $3.18M Mason (CBS) $2.9M Nabakov (NYI) $2.75M Crawford (CHI) $2.66M Varlamov (COL) $2.83M Howard (DET) $2.25M Smith (PHX) $2M Quick (LAK) $1.8M / $5.8M (2013-14) Lindback (TB) $1.8M Reimer (TOR) $1.8M Theodore (FLA) $1.5M Holtby (WASH) $637K / $1.85M (2013-14)

Probably not now for the above reason$. But, I wouldn't be surprised if Miller came here at the tail end of his career as a backup since he grew up in Michigan and because he won't be a career Sabre.

Kronwall is not 3rd in scoring in the league. He's not even the 3rd highest scoring defenseman in the league. He is 3rd on the team in PIM. Maybe that's what you are referring to.

Meh, shootouts are never that long in the pros. I'm a bigger proponent of the 3 on 3 overtime idea, but I like the shootouts for regular season games just fine. Shootouts are better than ties; incorporate an exciting hockey play with the breakaway; and end games quickly.

Quincey is terrible. His passes are flimsy. He turns it over often. He misplayed the puck and was directly responsible for CBS's third goal tonight. The guy can't even catch a pass. White should be in instead of Quincey. Plus, White's a right hand shot and should go back and help the second PP unit, if not replace Brunner on the point on the first PP unit. Brunner is not that great there. Kronwall should be on the trading block too. Doesn't seem like he's leading the D corps. Losing to Columbus pisses me off.

Holland says those dreaded words, "Our Deadline Addition"
redwings15 replied to Jedi's topic in General
Holland has not been sitting on his hands like you guys seem to believe. Most importantly, he brought in stellar additions with Brunner and Tootoo in the offseason after steadfastly trying to get Suter (who wanted a ludicrous contract and hasn't even propelled Minnesota to new heights). Gustavvson is a serviceable back-up. Samuelsson had 31 points last year; it's not Holland's fault Samuelsson got hurt. I can't help but feel like the Wings are still a piece or 2 away from a Cup-caliber team, but it's hard to truly confirm this when half of your team is actually from Grand Rapids (which have actually been a pleasant surprise) and nobody wants to trade to the team with the longest active playoff streak. Holland knows what he's doing and he's not just standing pat. -
The fellas left Howard out to dry tonight. So many giveaways. No power play conversions. Quincey sucked. And Datsyuk played well but he got a penalty twice while working the penalty kill..........

Quincey's in and over White?!?! We're screwed

Not optimistic about this one since Kings are out for blood after the last meeting

Ed Olczyk, professional broadcaster, professional idiot

If the hit wasn't so late, Yakupov wouldn't have had time to duck. This is a non-issue. -
People who say Howard is not an elite goaltender must have never played a single shift of hockey in their lives. The way he cuts down the angles on breakaways and shootouts. The way he has progressed tremendously from two years ago. The way he slides from side to side on 2-on-1s. With our suspect defense and power play, Howard keeps us in the game every game.
-
Are you serious? Howard is the best guy out there right now. He's consistent. He didn't flinch on the Iginla penalty shot. Howard is the only guy I don't blame.
-
I thought it was over the top because it wasn't the game-winning goal and he avoided celebrating with his teammates.

This is not true. His family used to live in metro Detroit for a couple years. Ryan would definitely consider returning home. He has some friends here and visits at least once a summer. Ryan said this about Anaheim, "Anaheim to me has been a team over the past year that really has shown me nothing to prove that they want me here, unfortunately. Obviously, it's not the ideal situation. When you get drafted, you want to win championships with that team and every time they look to add a piece to the puzzle, I'm the piece going the other way." I haven't heard if Detroit has inquired about him though.

Nevermind. I was thinking we would see a big trade coming or let Abs go for a 2nd round draft pick because we would have too many forwards. But, I forgot that Brunner and Nyquist have 2-way contracts; and, Eaves is still questionable. So, without Abs, we have 12 forwards and 3 ?'s ... well and a lot of $$$ & potential trade bait.

Abdelkader is a RFA but why does everyone assume he'll be back next year? Did I miss something?

Holland comments on Suter & Parise going to Wild
redwings15 replied to Liquidsnake's topic in General
Forget Suter. Not worth $90M/13 yrs. Not invincible. -
Dallas has made some decent moves and I do see them making the playoffs ... but I still don't think they are a threat to the West

signed Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr
redwings15 replied to Tim.D's topic in General
I'm pretty stoked about this pick up because he's a 30-point agitator. He scored more points than Prust and Moen last year. Yeah, he's only 5'9" but he's bloodied 6'3" guys. You guys need to be like Holland and venture "outside your comfort zone." Sometimes you have to risk it to get the biscuit
