Remaing RFAs to be signed - Jurco, Pulkkinen, Aubry

Just some Johan Franzen statistics I hope get considered when we potentially sacrifice Ferrarro, Pulkinnen or Callahan for him: -He is going to be 36 years old in December. -He has never played a full 82 game season in his career. -He has only scored 30+ goals one time during his career - in 2008/2009. -He has never recorded more than 60 points in any season during his career. -He has played 33, 54, and 41 games respectively through the past 3 seasons. -In those 3 seasons, he has scored 37 goals in 128 games - which averages out to be a 23 goal season (in 82 Games). -Since 2010, he has scored 7 goals and 5 assists in 32 playoff games. These numbers have predominately come as top 6 forward while lined up on either Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg's wing - but unfortunately, don't all of Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm and Riley Sheahan deserve or potentially do more with that opportunity than Franzen in 2015/16? If we believe that he's going to the healthy, rejuvenated, relatively quick power forward that we once saw - maybe I'm wrong and he would deserve a top 6 role... But when that doesn't happen, the collateral effects wont hurt us this year as much as next (assuming the Canadian Dollar doesn't rebound). It also statistically proven that our team scores more goals and allows fewer goals without him in the lineup - puck possession doesn't really change. Not saying I know what to do with him, but we certainly have a financial problem if he can't crack the top 6. All in all, you wont catch me in line buying umbrella's for the "pro-Franzen s*** storm" that isn't going to come.

Ryan O’Reilly Charged With Impaired Driving

This guy is all heart. Not only does he crush 15 tall cans and decide to drive just a few days after signing a $52.5 Million contract... Not only is he driving an unbo green 1951 Chevy pickup that literally no one else would have, but he ultimately decides that a Timmies run is 100% happening right now - hits the building, drives down the road, stops the truck and runs away. Get er done Kenny.

Gustav Nyquist signed 4-Year Deal $4.75 mill AAV

Say what you want, Ken Holland completely delivered today. I certainly think this contract is more than reasonable considering the deals O'Reilly ($7,500,000 X 7), Saad ($6,000,000 X 6), and Taresenko ($7,500,000 X 8) recently received. We still have the Cap Room to sign Jurco, Pulkinnen and Ferrarro - and another $8.6 Million coming off the books this summer (Quincey, Miller, Richards). Franzen adds another $3.9 if he cant go. ZETTERBERG - DATSYUK - ABDELKADER TATAR - SHEAHAN - FRANZEN NYQUIST - RICHARDS - PULKINNEN JURCO - HELM - GLENDENNING KRONWALL - ERICSSON DEKEYSER - GREEN SMITH - MARCHENKO We are undoubtedly better than we were a year ago, and still had the eventual Stanley cup finalists 2 minutes (or a Luke Glendenning setback) away from a 3-1 series lead. Cant wait.

Wings sign Brad Richards 1 yr, $3 million

    (A) If Johan Franzen returns to the team healthy and productive and; (B) If Riley Sheahan can make the necessary strides in his development as a 2 way Center with 2nd line potential... I think this would represent our most potent and well balanced lineup - simply put, there would be no better 3rd or 4th lines in hockey. 1. ZETTERBERG - DATSYUK - ABDELKADER 2. NYQUIST - SHEAHEAN - FRANZEN 3. TATAR - RICHARDS - PULKINNEN 4. JURCO - HELM - GLENDENNING 13. MILLER

    Nyquist Files For Arbitration

Left Winger - I agree... same train of thought. I question: 1. If Nyquist scores 48 points (for example) next season, doesn't his trade value plummet? I don't think 48 points seems way off... And at that point he would certainly look more Hudler than Z. 2. If Anthanasiou scores 60 points as a Griffin next season - Is he not heading down the exact same developmental path as Nyquist/Tatar/Pulkinnen? But as a bigger and more complete player than all three? My point is that I think we really underestimate our player development system and forget that at some point we need to replace our franchise players... If Nyquist can be used as a legitimate piece to acquire someone with that potential - I absolutely do it. Don't forget that our patented late round, offensively gifted, yet undersized players don't exactly have a history of lighting it up in the post-season - when it matters.

    Nyquist Files For Arbitration

lol Nyquist isn't signing a 2 year/$8,000,000 contract... Arbitrarily speaking, he would probably be awarded something in the $5,500,000 range. I suggested the trade idea because Hard Capped systems put an emphasis on decision making - decision's like: Is Gustav Nyquist the next Hudler or Filpulla, or is he the next Zetterberg (without the 2 way ability). All you can do is make that decision based on history, and history suggests that statically speaking - he is probably closer to Hudler/Filpulla range that Hank... But today is trade value is higher than ever.

    Nyquist Files For Arbitration

Historical stats also show that he's replaceable... Don't forget he's 26 at the start of this season - he wasn't a 20 or 21 year old who just scored 54 points in his rookie season. He spent 3 years at Maine, 3 seasons in Grand Rapids (where he consistently progressed) then struggled his first 22 Games as a Red Wing - but eventually started to contribute when he understood how. At 23 years old, how is the progress of Teemu Pulkinnen not exactly the same, if not better than Nyquist's? Pulkinnen is the same height, 10 LBS heavier with a way better shot, younger and Right Handed. If we can trade Nyquist in a package for a top pairing RH D-Man, I would certainly look into it...

    Free agents this off season

lol what a waste of time... As if $6,000,000 at 7 years is an overpayment - but $5,500,000 for 7 years is a deal. Do you guys actually watch the game? It's Cody Franson... literally irrelevant when he went to a good team playing important games. if he signs in Detroit at that money until he's 34, I'm done.
  9. WingedWheel91

    Free agents this off season

lol I live in Toronto, family/girlfriend/friends are all fans... No choice. But I also agree with your point about Petry, as Franson may not be better overall - but its been said that Petry also took a discount to stay in Montreal and not cash out July 1st.

    Free agents this off season

lol - I watch 82 Leafs games a year... Marchenko is already more physical than Franson... I have no idea who started the notion that Franson is a physical player. Big does not mean physical.

    Free agents this off season

F.Michael I agree - I would rather see what Oulette, Marchenko and Jensen can do with the same ice time... 20-30 Points is probably attainable and costs $5,000,000 less... Rick Zombo: I wouldn't - Franson is also better than Petry, and Boychuk is 31.
  12. WingedWheel91

    Free agents this off season

Not sure why you think Franson isn't going to make around $6,000,000... He's 27, Right Handed, and has great size - even though he isn't worth it to me, unfortunately the market favours those characteristics. This is also only the 2nd summer that limits contract length - meaning the cap hits are going to be higher because you cant circumvent salary anymore... Already this year: PETRY - 6 YEARS/$33 MILLION BOYCHUK - 7 YEARS/$42 MILLION LEDDY - 7 YEARS/$38.5 MILLION e_prime: If Kronwall is making $4,750,000 - Do you think Holland can or will even attempt to justify signing Franson for $6,000,000? He already gave Ericsson the bad long term D-Man contract...

    Free agents this off season

The point is that an (underwhelming defensive) defenseman whose apparent strengths include "moving the puck well, a good shot and quarterbacking a powerplay" should be scoring a hell of a lot more than 33 points per season - when you consider the players he played with, the situations he was in, and the minutes he played. Is he better than anyone who's currently in our top 4? Maybe, maybe not - Either way, you cant have 4 Defenseman making $6,000,000 per year.

    Free agents this off season

I will personally turn my back on this team if Cody Franson is signed. Scouting report from Khan: Strengths: His offensive ability, He moves the puck well, has a good shot and can quarterback the power play. Weakness: Is not widely regarded as a strong defender, lacking consistency. He registers a fair number of hits but isn't overly physical. (1) - He has only had 2 seasons in which he scored over 30 points (33 in 2014 + 36 in 2015), Both with Toronto, who (in his time as a leaf) were actually among the highest scoring teams in the league, but he was -20 in 2013-14, and -7 last year. (2) - As a Leaf, he was essentially a top pairing player - typically playing with the Kessel, Lupul and Bozak line. He was on the #1 PP unit as well as the PK. What I'm trying to say is that he played in all situations, logged the most ice time and was generally in a good (if not great) situation to maximize his point totals - in spite of win totals. (3) - At age 27, it was the Toronto Maple Leafs who decided that he was in no way/shape/form a part of this teams future. They traded him to Nashville, where he could barely crack the lineup (forget the top 4). On a good team full of good defenseman, he only registered 4 points in 23 games. Say what you will, but we are a lot closer to the Nashville Predators than the Toronto Maple Leafs - and haven't we already seen what happens when signing a player (with the ability to consistently produce points on a bad team) to a multi year contract? Just like Stephen Weiss, Cody Franson has never shown he could combine individual production with team success. No, he isn't worth 6 years at $6,000,000+.

    2015 Draft

Kliq - I didn't mean to direct that statement only at you... I've seen probably 10-15 Larkin re-draft scenarios. But you are absolutely right, he certainly has a chance to be a superstar... I would just rather have Strome because his offensive instincts are head and shoulders above Larkin. I hate to say this, but reality tells me Larkin has equal opportunity to be "two-way star" (Bergeron, Kesler) and/or "all around 3rd line C" (Filpulla, Sheahan, Vermette,) To put Larkin in the same Class as Toews, Kopitar, is unrealistic in my opinion.
  16. WingedWheel91

    2015 Draft

Here we go again... (1) Toews is a fantastic 2 way player - no doubt about it. He has also benefited from having the best coach in the NHL, the best defense pairing in the NHL, and an excellent core group of forwards (Kane, Hossa, Sharp) throughout this entire Blackhawks run. Don't forget, each year they have won the cup - they also lost players like Havlat, Madden, Versteeg, Ladd, Campbell, and Byfuglien. This year, they may lose Sharp, Shaw, Bickell etc... The point is, he hasn't been on a Stanley Cup winning team without playing for one of the absolute deepest (and prohibitive favourite) teams in the league. (2) I'm not sure how much OHL we all watch - but my best friends little brother (I know I know) plays for the Oshawa Generals, and I recently had a good conversation with him back home about how they dismantled Erie last month... Long story short, he said that Strome was their primary focus and faced the (oldest) and best defensive players the Gens had. McDavid was impossible to stop so if they could eliminate the 1B line, they would win the series. To the Joe Thornton comparison: I am thinking more like Ryan Getzlaf. (3) For as many people who love to use the "Larkin would be drafted top 5 this year" justification - you could also speculate that Strome would probably go #1 in any year but this one (last year, next year, etc). He led the OHL in scoring, as an 18 year old, playing on the 2nd line. If you think his numbers were inflated by McDavid - you literally haven't been paying attention... Take a look at Strome's production during the 21 games McDavid was out of the lineup... His PPG were higher. I have said it before and I'll say it again, do whatever you can to acquire this pick. Mantha, Nyquist and #19 gives you dynasty potential with Stome-Larkin down the middle.

Jets re-sign Anthony Peluso for only 675.000 AAV (2 years)

Maybe we can trade Mantha for this guy.

    Is this thread for real?

    2015 Draft

lol I have no doubts he'll be good, I just think this team needs to explore any and all opportunities to acquire building block (franchise) players... In my opinion, Strome has a higher ceiling than Larkin. If Arizona says they will consider trading it, well we aren't going to acquire a player like that with our draft picks, and they aren't available as free agents, so why not go all in? If a scenario exists where you can acquire that pick without giving up Larkin - I would do it all costs.

    2015 Draft

KRSMITH17 - You can argue semantics if you choose, but it doesn't take an NHL scout to understand if Larkin was being drafted next weekend - it wouldn't be before McDavid, Eichel or Strome. I would estimate that most people would concede Hannifin on this list as well. I would personally take Marner (most people really have no idea how good this kid is) and Provorov (another top 6 pick - write it down if you wish) over Larkin - but like I said, it's impossible to truly determine where he would go because too many variables come into play. I think people on this website (to no surprise) are truly underestimating how good the top 10 in this draft will be, and are overestimating Dylan Larkin before he's ever played an NHL game.
  21. WingedWheel91

    2015 Draft

It's really an impossible debate to successfully partake in... Draft picks are a combination of talent available, ceiling potential and organizational needs. If Dylan Larkin fell to a team who had great defence prospects, he might get taken over Provorov. If he fell to a team who had depth up the middle but needed help on the wing, no way would they pass on Mitch Marner. McDavid, Eichel, Strome, Hannifin get taken ahead of him regardless. That being said, I do agree with you in that I believe Larkin will be a great Detroit Red Wing one day... But last year at this time I would say almost everyone (myself included) felt the same way about Anthony Mantha (our cant miss 6'4" goal scoring prospect, with a lethal and accurate shot, plus great skating ability) and what % of people feel that way today? He already has forum dedicated to potentially trading him... before he's ever played a game for the Wings.

2015 SCF : Chicago Blackhawks vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

I meant to say *1 of Sharp and Seabrook, plus potentially Shaw or Saad
  23. WingedWheel91

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

Franson will be no better than Marchenko in 2 years, and will cost $5,000,000 more.
  24. WingedWheel91

2015 SCF : Chicago Blackhawks vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

I don't think anyone is saying our run wasn't impressive - but it was much easier to build a championship team in 1997 than it is today. The Chicago Blackhawks (in a hard salary capped system) have gone: 2009 - Conference Finals 2010 - Stanley Cup 2011 - 1st Round 2012 - 1st Round 2013 - Stanley Cup 2014 - Conference Finals 2015 - Stanley Cup During this process, they have also lost players like Havlat, Versteeg, Campbell, Ladd, Bolland, Byfuglien, Barker, Wisniewski, and Stahlberg exclusively from salary cap restrictions. This year, they are going to lose Sharp, Seabrook and potentially Shaw or Saad.
  25. WingedWheel91

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

Do whatever it takes to acquire that #3 pick... Mantha, Nyquist and #19 for Strome... ALL DAY You just assembled a Toews (Larkin) - Getzlaf (Strome) 1-2 Punch down the middle for the next 15 years. Nyquist is replaceable, Strome is not!
