Which (retired) *non* DetroitRedWings player would like to meet?
matthewdanna replied to frankgrimes's topic in General
Claude Lemiuex... so I could hit him in the head with a baseball bat -
I t'was thinking about the end of season award and how Pavs should basically win the Selke every year... I was also reading about Letang's injury and I was thinking about how overrated he is as a defenseman (I believe he get a reputation as a valuable defenseman because of his inflated offensive stats)... Then I started thinking (sure the word "thinking" might be an overstatement)... there are multitude of awards for offensive production for fowards: Hart = MVP (usually a F) Ross = Most Points (always a F) Lindsay = Best Player (usually a F) Richard = Most Goals (always a F) Calder = Best Rookie (Usually a F) And those awards are heavily, if not singularly, based on offensive production... Then on top of those there's the SELKE "awarded to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game." Still, much like Gold Gloves in baseball, the winner of the Selke has to have some offensive production to even be noticed... My question becomes this: Why is there only one award for defensemen? The Norris has predominantly gone to the best offensive-defenseman even though it is stated to be "awarded to the defenseman who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position." There is no way someone wins the Norris without offensive production... We were lucky with Nick because he was the best offensive and defensive defenseman. I say create another award for defensemen... perhaps the best defensive-defenseman award. Name it after Eddie Shore, Doug Harvey, or dare I say... Nick Lidstrom Sorry for the long post... super bored. GO WINGS!

Holland just said that nobody else will be put on waivers before the beginning of the season. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2013/09/red_wings_place_center_cory_em.html

GDT 9/27 Pre-Season GDT : Maple Leafs 2 at Red Wings 5
matthewdanna replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
I might be thinking too romantically here... but I think Alfie playing with Mule is making Mule work harder... sure it's one game, but maybe Alfie is someone he really looks up to. Either way, I love a good Mule Show! -

Weiss = Groin... "precautionary" -
I agree with this, especially since our best players are going to be playing in the Olympics [Pav, Z, Kronner, E (most likely), Franzen (most likely)]. I hope Alfie isn't on team Sweden. I don't think we had anyone in team Canada's camp. Don't think Abby and Deke make team USA, and I'd rather Howie get the break, but maybe playing in the Olympics will keep him sharp. Hopefully with the big ice Pav and Z have plenty of room to avoid injuries.

GDT 9/25 Pre-Season GDT : Penguins 5 at Red Wings 1

I liked Sheahan's compete level (said in Backcock's voice). Think he can be a player in a year or so. -
I thought Franzen played good last night... he showed more effort than most. Even got a some PK time.

Should we expect a slow start from Alfie?
matthewdanna replied to Red Wings Addict's topic in General
yes -
http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/23805145/raffi-torres-out-six-weeks-maybe-34-months-with-acl-injury Maybe Los Guppies could use and extra forward now...

Mrazek needs another full season in GR and another AHL playoff run. If he gets a half dozen starts up with the varsity this year, that's good. Then next year he can be the back up, get 25-30 games... but, let's remember, Howie is a stud and there's no reason to rush Mrazek.

Devils sign Brunner 2 yrs. $2.5 million AAV
matthewdanna replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Wasn't Brunner asking for $3.5M+/yr from us? Latex -
I like Abby, but we might end up using him as a C to start the season with Helm hurt if we get rid of Emmerton. In that case, who knows. I think we would want a high energy/agitator type, defensively responsible to play against opponents' top lines. While that's not necessarily how I'd describe Alfie, I would still consider him. Heck, maybe it's Drew Miller... I just think Cleary would be a mistake on the first line. I think it really just comes down to whatever Pav and Z want, and they seem to like Abby.

points scored on the power play do not count toward +/- -

Almquist was ok too... I noticed Crosby... being the same crybaby cheap shot artist he's always been - Hockey Brat. -
Next Stage of Prospects: Who Makes the Cut?
matthewdanna replied to Son of a Wing's topic in General
I could see Calle as a bottom 6 RW next year (not at center). Being right-handed on this team is a plus. I think Jurco has a shot. Glendening as a depth C. I don't think Manta is going to the AHL next year, so he's 2+ years off. I think all of our Defensive prospects are still 2 years away. Almquist might be the most ready, but he's a depth defenseman... I think Sproul could be the real deal eventually. -
Signed Cleary re-signs with Detroit, 1 year, $1.75m deal
matthewdanna replied to wingedominance13's topic in General
I am also glad he is back. He is a warrior and a leader... total class act. I wonder, is there another Red Wing forum with rational fans? After signing Weiss, Alfie, Nyquist, Gus and Smith, plus inking Pavs to an extension, Holland was a genius. Then he re-signs a team leader for less than he offered him a couple months ago and it's time, once again, to fire Holland... it's laughable. We have the best GM and the best coach. Wins cures all of this and if we do make a long run in the playoffs, regardless of the lines Babs decides to roll, I hope all the doubters calling for Holland's and Bab's heads to roll will eat crow. I love our Wings and what we are about. EXACTLY! Our team captain was campaigning for him to come back... But the average LGW poster knows more about hockey than Zetterberg (and Holland, Babs, Howe, Yzerman, Gretzky, God, ...) -
Signed Cleary re-signs with Detroit, 1 year, $1.75m deal
matthewdanna replied to wingedominance13's topic in General
Cleary wanted to be a Wing and is taking less than we offered at the end of the year... Money shows he's definitely not playing top 6 minutes. One year deal? Perfect. Is Tatar in play? hopefully not. Helm is going to start in LTIR, Nyquist is going to start in GR. So we need to get rid of one more player to start the year. Can't we use a normal buyout on Samuelsson? Tootoo? -
Kenny Powers is behind the KSwiss look
-
Signed Joakim Andersson re-signs, 2yrs, $1.465m ($732,500k cap hit)
matthewdanna replied to Ram's topic in General
Totally agree on the extension -
Wish he was lacing them up on March 6...
-
As much as I liked Brunner for his hands and skating, he played literally no defense. He's not a top-6 guy on this team and as many have said, both Nyquist and Tatar are as good, if not better, than him right now. More importantly, they are better fits for this team.
