even if Zetterberg plays 3 years, his cap hit alone eats most of tat 10% even with cap increases

teams can only go 10% over the cap. Franzen plus either Kronwall or Zetterberg is more than that

Franzen is going to be an issue unless his contract is traded once Kronwall or Zetterberg are done. Helm on the 4th line taking up that much cash with Glendening is going to be an issue.

Most was an overstatement. 10 players are signed for at least three more years. Of those, Zetterberg and Kronwall are at the ends of their careers and may (probably in Zetterberg's) case not finish the deal. Glendening, Helm, Abdelkader are average to bottom end players. Nielsen will probably be an overpaid 3rd liner his last year. Dekeyser is the only one who has a real chance of being worth his deal. Of the guys who aren't signed long term, Green, Smith, Ott, and Miller stand out as guys you dont want to lose. The rest you at least hope will show enough to want to keep. The absolutely best case scenario is they end up spending ariund $7 mil a season for their 4th line in three years when Helm is forced down there by actual scorong line players and Holland, or the new GM, can find a way to move some bad contracts and dead money paid to players on ltir retirement.

Not going to be a contender unless No-Trade Kenny stops sitting on his hands. The defense will blow. Besides, with most of the team signed long term for too much money, how are they going to keep Larkin and the rest of these future stars that are going to turn the team into legit contenders?

Zetterberg Larkin Abdelkader Tatar Nielsen Nyquist Mantha AA Jurco Sheahan Glendening Miller you don't need to hand over a top 6 role to a rookie. Let them force someone off a top 2 line. Don't like Jurco? Fine, sign Vanek anyway or even better get another 4th line minimum wage guy and put Sheahan there and tell Aubrey, Bertuzzi, and everyone else that there's a regular spot or two up for grabs. I have zero interest is spinning their wheels and doing nothing, I can watch the Tigers and Lions do that. I want the Wings to be focused on either winning the Cup this year or in 3 years. Right now neither of those options are the focus. And giving a guy who has never even come closely to 20 goals that much miney for 5 years and a guy who defines fourth liner a four year deal worth almost $2 mil is bad regardless of the deals you compare them to. It's not as bad as this dumb deal isn't a good defense in any way shape or form. And anyone who questions my fandom because I'm pissed at the culture of mediocrity that's infested the team can bite my shiny metal ass.

I don't see a team that has AA and Mantha being significantly worse than their current roster with overpaid Helm and band-aid Vanek, or telling Glendening that he's getting a two year deal that pays $950k a season or he can walk as being a crushing blow if he walks. Instead Helm gets a stupid deal and Glendening gets nearly double what he should.

Miller and Ott are on one year deals that don't pay much. Helm, Glendening, and Abdelkader were all gifted deals that pay $500K to $1 mil too much a season on deals that are 2 or 3 year a too long. AA and Mantha would have to play their way off the roster on a rebuilding team.

if he was rebuilding he'd be letting guys like Helm and Glendening walk instead of giving them too much money and too long of a deal or signing Vanek as a stop gap in a desperate attempt to squeak into the playoffs.

except they're not rebuilding, they're signing middling players to long term deals and blocking young players.

this is the for at time in a long time I'm not that excited for the new hockey season. I have zero confidence that the Wings are going to do.much more than sneak into the playoffs and lose in 4 or 5. Holland's body of work the last several years has taken the team from contender to mediocre and he hasn't done anything to get them back to contender status. Only two non-rental trades, middle of the roster players signed to long term deals, and almost every free agent has blown up in his face.

I don't know that Trouba will ever be better than Fowler though. Giving up much more for him doesn't make a lot of sense. One forward, a d, and balancing the money should do it for either. Of course money wouldn't matter if Holland didn't spend it all on average players

One forward plus Smith or younger D and picks is not gutting the roster

by incapable I mean mentally incapable of it. His history the last decade shows he doesn't do trades, especially if he has to move a roster player to do it. I don't want him dealing every week just because he gets bored but this is ridiculous.

points don't tell the whole story. He's the third rh D on their roster which means either he gets less time or he plays his off wing, something not everyone can effectively do. No, hes not a guarantee to be a top pair D, bit nobody is, and he has a better chance than anyone Detroit has now. As for Mrazek, he had a good half season them was hot garbage after mid February, and there's a long list of goalies who impressed early and flamed out, so there's no guarantee there either. Would I for sure do Mrazek for Trouba, I dont know. I'd damn sure consider it though. A forward other than Larkin plus a d going to Winnipeg, that's a no-brainer. But it's a moot point since we all know Holland is as capable of making a trade as a eunuch is of becoming a dad.

He's 22. You don't look at what he is, you look at what he will likely be down the road. At 22 most Wings D prospects are in GR or college. He's in the NHL.

Trouba for Mrazek. Or Howard and Smith for Trouba and their worst contract But seriously, in the cap era Holland has made two trades that weren't for rentals or just throwaways like Huskins and Commodore. Both were draft picks or low level prospect

I don't think it would take AA and Nyquist both, unles something else came back with Fowler. I'd guess more like one of Nyquist/Tatar/Mantha/AA plus a lesser asset like Smith or a younger D. Even if it was Nyquist and AA I think it would be worth it to upgrade the D though. Like I said, it's a black hole with non help in sight barring a trade

Fowler played top pair minutes on a team that was better than Detroit. Pretty hard to find a legitimate argument that he's only a second pair guy and will never be more at 24 years old. AA had a good half season or so for a rookie, all projections have him as a second line guy, if not a third liner.

Helm, Abdelkader, Glendening, Ericsson, and Howard, all to dump bad contracts.

FORWARD. Please read the post before arguing it. And just because he's a center in juniors and the minors doesn't mean he will be a center in the NHL. Besides, the point remains, second top pair D is more valuable than a second line forward, be it a center or winger.

A second line forward is more valuable than a top pairing D? Fowler and Trouba are both young enough to be helping Detroit for several years.
