    Roster Moves by the Wings

Does anyone remember the logic behind switching him to wing? Cuz we drafted him to be a defenseman... Was he that bad at defense that they couldn't use him on the 3rd pair in college, or did they just want the size up front?

10/30 GDT : Ottawa Senators 3 at Red Wings 1

Sheahan showed a couple glimpses of a spark in the first, more than I think I've seen from him so far this season, and Dekeyser got hurt at a bad time. Its gonna take him a little while to get back into the swing of things, same (or more so)with helm.

    Detroit Pistons Season Thread

I'm impressed that they beat the Hawks that's been a pretty damn good team lately.Didn't watch any of the jazz game. But we have some decent shooters now and the spacing issues we had with Drummond, Smith, and Monroe are gone now. If they're still playing well in a month or two, then I'll start giving them more attention. Ha

Byfuglien - What would he cost?

Also iirc Andersson Is also on a one year deal. He's Honestly a pretty ideal 13th forward, and mrazek Is on a one year deal through the end of this season, he'll still be an RFA but he's no longer on his ELC. http://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2014/7/1/5861384/free-agency-2014-red-wings-extend-petr-mrazek were gonna have some turn over but I don't know if its enough to get kopi And those we do keep. I'm not a cap expert though, so I'm sure there's a way to work it out.

Abby, helm, pulkkinen, mrazek, Ferraro and I'm pretty sure any of the d men that are out of waiver exceptions contracts all expire. So we probably have to make a move either way honestly, we can't keep all these guys. It used to be you grew up in a another country, the red wings were probably your favorite team.I think he's in the age bracket Just old enough for this to be true. Ha.

All Purpose "Ovechkin is Awesome" Thread

Yeah I Know. But posting Just the Red Wings fan would've made it completely off topic, and I wanted to work that beehive thing in somewhere. So I went for it. Plus. Ovi did this. And this Is Amazing.

Byfuglien - What would he cost?

9m/yr would Be tough to work into the salary cap and re-sign our guys. But if he hadn't signed and the kings arent looking like contenders (and we get our stuff together) our first round pick to replace the one they lost would probably be enticing, along with some other assets that Wed need To get rid anyway for the cap/roster spot. Assuming they get an extension done pre trade, I'm sure they'd be able to make it work.

Ha.but McKee was drafted in 2012, And Johnson went undrafted in 2011, I don't remember if he was signed after the first time tj was in the draft, if 2012 would've been his re-entry or if 2011 was his re-entry into the draft. so then Instead of mckee it wouldve been Richard nedomlel or Matias backman. Hindsight is 20/20 I know, and I'm not saying that we would have drafted him, just that we used to go for skill over size. Now they're willing to give a bit on the skill for the upgrade in size. ** I'm just wondering if that is or wil be coming back to bite us since they're getting away from what made the team successful for so many years. **(there's exceptions to this, sure, for some reason saarijärvi is the only one to come to mind.) edit:the draft cut off date obscured the two year gap in birth years.

    What is wrong with Anaheim?

"a quarter of an inch, Charlie. A quarter of an inch." Yeah, but a quarter inch the other way and you would've missed completely. "Shut up, Charlie."

    What is wrong with Anaheim?

If anyone could bring the quack back, it'd for sure be Bombay.the flying v would be the most lethal thing that offense has seen this year, I just don't think the Triple Deke from the blueline will work in today's nhl.

Is Dylan Larkin a lock to stay in the NHL beyond 9-games?

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but to the bolded, I very much so agree. This isn't going to be a popular opinion because switching people who are struggling to something other than their natural position admittedly sounds like a bad idea, but I think jurco would excel at center. He's strong, he's fast, he's pretty defensively responsible and he's always made amazing passes. And he already has a slumped over posture when battling for pucks which is good for getting low on the ice for pull on face offs. And if he's bad at faceoffs, have sheahan take them, then switch responsibilities like they used to do with kariya. Sheahan is excellent net front, and good on the wall and in the corners which should make him an ideal winger to. And I've said it a lot since the injury plagued season when Jurco sheahan and tats was a dominant third line that I wish they would've kept them together. For how much success they had during the regular season, then they werent re-united again at all in the playoffs which was maddening. Imagine the chemistry they would have had they stuck together for the last two years. And Larkin is going to be special, he already is and I'm very, very excited to watch him grow. Not to mention once pav gets back to have him learning to take the reigns from them the way they did from y, and lidstrom. I just wish pav had more time, because I think he would be the perfect teacher for athanasiou. Go watch aas highlights, it was like watching helm with Datsyuks hands and I would love to see Dats give him the confidence and tricks to pull these things in the NHL.

Dude.Make a sign. And if you even think the cameras are looking at you, wave both hands like a mad man with broken wrists attempting jazz hands. It'll be magic. I promise. I also really hope they play well too as well.

Realistically?Probably less than 1%. And we actually have a lot of big bodies here and coming up, Julius vähätalo is like 6'7 and is pretty damn skilled, and said he wants to come over to n.a. after next season. Not mention mantha, bertuzzi, aa, nosek, Sproul, all of these guys are over 6'1. Were gradually getting bigger, but I think the days of a big body for the sake of big body things is over for good now. If you can't pk, defend, or at least provide good forchecking 10+ minutes a night then you're not gonna be here. Especially on the red wings. Yes he was undrafted, not taking away from the point at all, That's why I said we could have had him over someone like mckee, because we could had drafted him in the 7th round of either of his draft eligible years over one of our big bodied late round flyer picks. I used McKee as an example because I didn't wanna look up the years Johnson went undrafted, and who we drafted and in what round. We used to always take the small skilled guy over the bigger less skilled guy, when everyone else for the most part was doing the opposite. Now there's an over abundance of skill in the league and were getting bigger, getting away from what we had so much success with because the trend looked like it was going that way. Honestly though, with the draft now everyone has a plethora of scouts, so finding the players we used to isnt going to happen. And theres so many other resources out there that drafting is seemingly becoming much more efficient.(there's stats and numbers to back this up, but I'm not going to try to find that black hole this early) every team is getting better and better at it as it becomes more specialized. And teams aren't necessarily drafting b.p.a anymore because they're trying to build into a model of the team they want. This kind of went off an a tangent, but I don't think having any type of enforcer or more grit is going to make this team more successful or slow our injuries. Abby is an amazingly physical player, so is quite a few of our d men, but the red wings don't play the game with wreckless abandon, so even if we had a carbon copy of mccarty or drake, we wouldnt be using them the way they were before or theyd be getting suspended/penalized A LOT, and then wouldn't be in the lineup because the penalties would hurt the team more. Its just not how it is anymore.

    Goalie Battle

Howard has been very impressive so far, like he always is before he gets hurt. I like that they're both playing well, but I think the fact that they're alternating games might be a one cause for our problems. Not that the rest of the team is playing all unanimously playing well, because theyre not, but they have very different styles when it comes to net front plays, rebound control, playing the puck, the difference is enough that I could see it affecting the players in front of them. Like its not allowing them to settle into a groove. Playing with a different goalie once in a while is different, you can make small changes and then goalie also adjusts a bit and it bridges the gap. Having to adapt to two goalies like they're both the starter isnt the easiest thing to do, as the breakout starts with Petr mor often than not, and Howie just helps it along if he can. I'd like for them to stick with one guy, but they're both playing super well, so what can ya do? We had a deaf goalie when I was younger, and he was super confident with the puck, he would take a shot from his crease. And if their was a delayed penalty wed all bang our sticks on the ice so he knew to get to the bench, but we all still did it when our other goalie was in. I mean, weird example, but same idea.

And ovi is one if the best scorers in the history of the NHL, he's the most lethal one in this era. Im a red wings fan first, but you can bet your beehive I'm a hockey fan and I like to see greatness rewarded. (I call buttcheeks beehives)

Byfuglien - What would he cost?

From what im told, Theyre sort of in a situation like us in that they have alot of talent coming up, with not many places to put them, that and the fact that supposedly the contract talks never really progressed to a point where they'd call it close. And ladds camps broke off negotiations once the season started, so they're in a position where if they were to lose both Byfuglien and Ladd at the same time for nothing, I imagine there would have to be some backlash. Not saying they can't replace it internally, because they probably can, (ehlers is going to be good) and losing buff is a weird one, they have good d depth, but no matter how you slice it losing a physical top pairing guy for nothing with his skills is poor asset management. But this is second hand from friends, and perusing hfboards, so I don't know how accurate it is. But I would welcome either of them here next off season. Neither would be cheap, for sure, but north are probably worth it. Ladd has been pretty underrated for a while. Awesome player.
