ha. youre right. or are we just spoiled AF after having Klima-Fedorov-Datsyuk man the 2C slot for 25 straight seasons? I'd like to see us take a shot at ROR and Tarasenko. They would be a good size upgrade. Tarasenko-O'Reilly-Raymond Rasmussen-Larkin-Perron Kubalik-Copp-Kasper Zadina-Veleno-Soderblom

yup. Great series. -
Willander and Reinbacher would be a fantastic haul if we can make it happen. I'd feel REAL good about: Walman-Seider Edvinsson-Reinbacher Wallinder-Willander Johansson Husso Cossa

Lidstrom was hurt in game 5, and he played the s*** out of him on a pulled groin. That was a mistake. I might have done the same cuz Nick F'ing Lidstrom, but it hurt us. -
This is becoming less viable as the years go by. You need to know the top 75 guys inside and out at least have a report on the next 225. The Wings probably had a bit of an advantage on the 2 leagues below the SHL in the early 2000s, bit I would bet that's gone by now.

I think we are kind of saying the same thing, tbh. I just think what you are describing only applies to the top 60 to 75 players. I dont think the Red Wings are researching bloodlines and testosterone levels as they get into the later rounds. Have they had a scout rate each guy's brains, personality, and competitiveness? Yah, probably. But I think those are less important and pnly used as a tie breaker in the later rounds. The scouts score all the players, and then the teams take the 18 year olds with the best scores. Tie goes to the kid who has the better intangibles. Simple as that.

Im curious to know if Gudreau was informed by Columbus that they would be targeting Babcock. That's a pretty drastic work environment change. -
The Chiasson issue is not complicated. We need 17 forwards. 7 of those have to be able tp go up and down to and from GR. Do we have room for Chiasson on 23-24 to fit into these 7 guys? Yes. Is he cheap? Yes. Sign him.

Truth is probably in the middle. First 5 picks - BPA and Need match each other. So there's zero guesswork. If the Oilers had the first pick, would they select Fantilli over Bedard because they need more grit? No. Every team needs more of what Bedard has. He is THE BPA without doubt. After pick 5, the selection process switches to preference/need. Teams have their targets for the top 50-60 players based on how quickly they think a player can fill a hole. Seider, Cossa, etc. These guys were reaches on draft day, but filled holes the Red Wings had in their system. After the 2nd round, the process Colin is describing is spot on. The teams have players 63 thru 300 scored based on their scouting. They might have certain positions they put out of play until later rounds considering their prospect pools - the Wings might be passing on any left handed defensemen until rounds 6/7, for example. But for the most part, it's BPA from rounds 3 thru 7. Agreed?

He's a #8 OA pick. He's gotta be decent. Both never did bother me. Now stay on topic. -

Yah, it's not that Hellebyuck isnt a fantastic goalie. It's that he's only got next year on his contract. Why would we give up anything when we could just pick him up in UFA after next season? On top of that, Cossa is showing progress. It would be different if Cossa was pulling a Tom McCollum. But he's improving at a 1 league per season rate, so why put another roadblock in front of him? We used some pretty valuable assets and have spent time developing our future netminder. Snuffing him out makes zero sense. -

Have you guys seen the Winnipeg guy's trade talk yet? Speculating about Hellebyuck for Husso, Kasper, and our #9 pick. Dumbest thing Ive ever seen. -
Exactly. The only actual BPA pick of the Red Wings recently was Filip Zadina. And Holland was terribly wrong about it, as we all now know.
-
I also believe teams draft for need 99% of the time. They will usually trade down if there is a guy they dont need but know that other teams do. We traded up to get Cossa out of need. Not because everybody was predicting Cossa was the next guy off the board.

Yah, it's different when your current 3C is Igor Larionov. Then even Datsyuk has a hard time getting time at center ice. When your 3C is Joe Veleno, you play Kasper instead.
-
Its not that confusing.
-
Kasperitus numbnuts! Helge Grans was up for grabs. damn. would like to get him in our system.
