    Official 2019 Offseason Rebuild Thread

So, since this season already seems to be a wash, I am thinking ahead to the TDL and free agency next summer. Pending UFA's: Vanek, Nyquist, Kronwall, Jensen, Witkowski, Howard Pending RFA's: Frk, Hicketts Vanek and Nyquist both have NTC, so they aren't going anywhere at the TDL, no matter how much you want to trade them. And no, I don't think they waive them to get off this team, although anything is possible. If Nyquist waives it, and you can trade him, do it. But, Vanek will leave via free agency and will not be brought back. Nyquist could be re-signed to a 3 year deal. Kronwall has a modified NTC, but there is no way they trade him, even if one of the 10 teams on his list come calling. It's not their style. He will retire at the end of the season as a Red Wing. Witkowski could be traded, but I doubt there is any interest. He won't be re-signed. Jensen and Howard are the 2 most likely trade candidates. Neither have NTC/NMC protection. They both have replacements on the roster. They should be traded if there is any interest. Either could be re-signed as free agents in the off season, Jensen to a 2 year deal, and Howard to a 2-3 year deal. Frk and Hicketts should only be brought back if there is a roster spot available. 2019 Signed F (11): Larkin, Nielsen, Abby, Helm, Mantha, AA, Glendening, Bertuzzi, Rass, Ehn, Svech. That leaves 3 spots. One for Zadina, and the other 2 for either Nyquist or Frk. (Unless of course the Wings manage to win the lottery and get Hughes 1st overall) 2019 Signed D (6): Green , DD, Cholowski, Daley, E, Hronek. That leaves only 1 spot. I would re-sign Hicketts to be a "tweener" and try to re-sign Jensen to a 2 year deal as a 3rd pair D to give the team another RH D. Sulak is another option. When all is said and done, this roster won't look much different than it does this year. Forwards: Larkin, Mantha, Zadina Nielsen, Rass, Nyquist AA, Bert, Svech Abby, Glendening, Helm Ehn/Frk (G. Smith, Turgeon) Defense: Cholowski, Green Daley, Hronek E, DD Jensen (Hicketts, Sulak) Goalies: Howard Bernier (Sateri)

Has Blashill finally lost the team?

This team won't even sniff the playoffs this season, but I did think that they had the lineup to finish somewhere between 8-10 in the Conference AT BEST. At this point it looks like they will finish in the bottom 4 overall, and maybe now that is not such a bad thing.

Mantha is Lazy and He Sucks

Problem is that everyone is pretty bad right now. You can't demote everyone. For the kids, it becomes a teachable moment as they're still developing. As for the vets, demotion becomes more about "discipline" or motivation. I think that a young player being demoted or even scratched does more to help them than it does an older player.

Has Blashill finally lost the team?

I disagree. I think this team has enough talent overall to be a borderline playoff time.

You fall for it every single time. I wouldn't trade Laine alone for Hughes.

"He's a Hall-of-Fame GM. I think they'll wait for the right time. "Eventually, I believe (Yzerman) will be here." "Me guessing, yeah, I think it's inevitable that at some point in time he will be here," said Osgood, adding he hasn't talked to Yzerman about his plans.

The Legend of Cholo (A Cholowski Appreciation Thread)

You sound like my GF. Anyway, to contribute to the convo, I found this: https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2018/10/21/dennis-cholowski-detroit-red-wings/1719362002/ Had the Wings not started the season without veteran defensemen Mike Green, Niklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson, Cholowski would not have been thrown into a prominent role as a rookie. But he was, and responded with a goal in his first game. In his second, he contributed two assists. He leads all Wings defensemen with five points, and is tied for second in points overall on the team. His 21:48 of average ice time leads team defensemen. Shoulda drafted Chychryn.

10/20 Nutmeg Peach GDT - Red Wings @ Panthers - 7:00 PM ET

Can we call Rasmussen "Moose"? That way next season (assuming Nyquist is back) we can have Goose, Moose, and Hughes. It will drown out all of the BOOOOOs.

    Which Extra Forward Should Sit?

Yes they will be. And they will be replaced by younger players as they develop. That's a rebuild, which a lot of you guys seem to want. You don't get rid of all your vets at once. It's a process. UFAs this summer: Nyquist, Witko, Vanek, Kronwall, Jensen, Howard. Even 3 of them are brought back (Nyquist, Jensen, Howard), that means 3 more kids up next year. UFAs next summer: Green, E, Daley. Plus, Franzen's contract comes off the books. Even if E's re-signed, that's 2 more spots for kids. Then Helm, Glenny, and Bernier the year after that (plus Z's contract), so probably 2 more kids that season. The only 3 "vets" left after that are Nielsen, Abby, and Dekeyser. Is that still too many for a "rebuild"? That's 12 hated "vets" coming off the payroll over the next 3 years. At the same time, the kids who are the future who have been drafted over the past few seasons will be coming onto the roster. That's a rebuild. It's almost like Holland actually knows what he's doing. But that can't be true, can it? The albatross contracts are coming off the books the same time the kids are getting big raises. The overpaid vets are coming off the team at the same rate that some of the kids are ready to come up. But that's all just dumb luck, right?
  21. Holland had nothing to do with that?
