2018 Prospect Tournament and Training Camp
Neomaxizoomdweebie replied to Neomaxizoomdweebie's topic in General
I was not expecting much out of Svech because it seem like he's been passed up by other prospects. He was better than I thought he would be based on lower expectations, if that makes sense. That said, I think he involves himself in the play well and seems to be sound positionally, hence the rebound goal. I like Cholowski. He seems to have a higher ceiling than Hronek IMO. I really see top pair potential there. Hronek seemed up to the task, but didn't "wow" me. Sulak got a long look at camp to. He didn't look bad. Ras looked more "polished", but seemed to me like he could have dominated, if he wanted to. Maybe needs to bulk up? Does seem like he makes the roster. I know ur high on Veleno. He looks like he has real potential, and isn't as far away as I thought. 2 years tops. Zadina didn't impress me at all during the Tournament. I expected him to be better considering he was playing against kids, most of whom aren't NHL ready. He looked better in camp, but I think he could use some time in GR first. The 2 most underrated guys IMO were Smith and Saarajarvi. Smith craves action, and gets involved in the play whether in the O or D zone. Wherever the puck is, he seems to be there. Very strong on the puck when he has it. much improved over last year. Saarajarvi was very much under the radar behind Cholowski and Hronek, but is very underrated IMO. Seemed to understand the position and have the ability to overcome limitations. Future NHLer IMO. -

Z2? Loved the Red and White Game. Svech looked good. Zadina too. Helm actually showed hands. Love the Alumni game. Watching a helmetless Mickey Redmond skate down the ice and score was priceless. He's still got it! -
I'm referring to Z and the organization when i talk about "language". LGWers can (and do) say whatever they want.

I need to start doing this. A week up here costs me like 2K after lodging, tickets, meals, souvenirs, etc. Starting next year, I'll be LGWs official training camp reporter and make u all pay for it. Sound good? -
Admittedly I was concerned when I first saw the thread title because I thought that Z was officially retiring, which would have been a huge problem. Upon reading the article, I felt better about it. What does concern me still is the role the league will take. We joke repeatedly about Franzens LTIRetirement, and Prongers before that, and then Hossas. But it would seem that Z's was the contract that seemed to implement the stricter rules and penalties under the new CBA. It was even admitted publicly that his contract was intentionally structured to circumvent the cap under the old CBA. I just think that Z and the team need to be careful when it comes to the terminologies used when discussing the end of his career. I don't want this situation to become the one where Bettman decides to finally set an example when it comes to skirting the rules. Just be careful is all I am saying.
-
The language concerns me. "Retired"' screws the team because of the recapture penalty in the new CBA. Being put on LTIR allows the team the cap relief. It may be splitting hairs to us, but I think the league might feel differently. Pretend like you're having a current events discussion with a snowflake...it's kinda like that.
-
Yes I know. The thread title says Z has retired. He hasn't. He's going onto LTIR.
-
The article says that Z is going on LTIR, not retiring. Two totally different things, especially when it comes to roster status and cap ramifications.
-
Still waiting for all the people in the know who were talking about Z being done to come out and say that Larkin got paid more because of it. Oh wait, they haven't. Cuz it didn't happen.
-
SOP. I think this is more of a failsafe measure in case the kids crap the bed at camp or there are veteran injuries. Otherwise, he has about as good a chance as Dan Cleary.
-
No. He's lazy and he sucks.

Horrible ending last night. 7 goals on 20? shots I think. Fulcher was terrible. Cholowski looked great. NHL ready IMO. Zadina didn't impress. Arena got really quiet when Zadina went down. Wade only got 2 for roughing on that hit. Then Saarajarvi got 2 for being tackled by Wade when he went to defend his teammate. Speaking of Saarajarvi, I thought he looked good. Do think he will turn into an NHLer by next year. Rasmussen was OK. Cool story from last night. Took my GF and her 1 1\2 year old to the game. During intermission, her daughter got away from her and started running away. Next thing I see is her running toward someone. He reaches out his arms like he's going to pick her up, and then her mom catches up to her and grabs her and pulls her away. Thats when I noticed that it was Kris Draper! As my GF (who knows nothing about the Red Wings) is walking her daughter away, I said "Do you know who that was?" Of course she didn't. So, I am wishing now that she had been a little slower getting there. The photo op that would have resulted would have been priceless. -
Heard this before. It never happened.

Hope they keep it up. Looking forward to seeing them in person on Tuesday. I hope they don't disappoint. -
Fair enough. But I am actually with Lefty on this one (can't believe I am saying that). Karlsson is just not enough for we to be willing to give up a high 1st and taking back that kind of cap hit. I just don't think it's a good long term plan. Can you imagine giving up our first (which tuns out to be #1 overall), taking on a 7.25 cap hit for the next 5 years, and then Karlsson doesn't resign? Too big a risk for this team. Would rather take my chances with him in free agency. If Don Z commands it...EK will obey.

Glad to see all the names we want to see are showing up on the scoreboard. -
So ur advocating trading away Nielsen's 5.25 for 4 yrs, Abby's 4.25 for 5, Helm's 3.85 for 3, and Dekeyser's 5 for 4 because they're overpaid albatross contracts, but you then want to acquire Bobby Ryan's 7.25 mil cap hit for the next 4 years?

I am not worried whatsoever. No lose situation. If he sucks, then I am right. If he's good, then I am glad to be wrong. -

Tournament started. Anyone there yet? I am only attending the last day. -
It's about time. RDR was like 10 years ago. When's it coming out?

Berggren was ranked at the bottom of the 1st round in some rankings as well. 4 first rounders really. Spoiler Alert: Rass at 46, Zadina at 6. -
No argument here. He's solid, but not the kind of player who "wows" you. But that's OK. He's does his job well without drawing attention to himself. Exactly what I want a young defenseman to emulate. Disagree. Still a 2nd pair guy IMO. Jensen is a 3rd pair. True. But I don't expect Kronwall back after this season, and I prefer having rookie/vet combos on the defense. Green-top pair, Daley-2nd pair, Ericsson-3rd pair. next season. At the TDL next year? Sure. Get something for him instead of losing him for nothing. But until then, Daley is just more of an asset than Jensen IMO.Guys like Jensen are a dime a dozen. Must keep? No. But I do think he's a much better dman than Jensen, who i don't expect to be re-signed. Pretty much what I think the plan is. Don't have a problem with Green back as a 35 yo 3rd pair /PP guy, but the other 2 should not be brought back, I agree.

Next season.
