My understanding is that each arena is required to have an emergency goaltender available and on the premises for each game. He (or she) is usually a local beer leaguer, trainer, coach, etc who can be called into play for either team if they lose both of their roster goalies to injury. Yeah, that's TOTALLY less offensive! Being that a team nickname generally honors or glorifies the group its named for, no, I don't think anyone would be offended. The people who fit that name are not insulted by it, anymore than I am insulted by being called a Yank in the UK or Australia. Having both Irish and American Indian descendency, I am not offended by Redskins, Indians, or Fighting Irish for that matter. But since I don't share in progressive philosophy. my opinion is moot, regardless of my ethnicity and/or ancestry. I would be okay with this. I wouldn't mind Sockeyes either. I love my Salmon Kings Jersey.

The only thing I might question is Rass as a top 6 to start the season. I can see him there possibly after the TDL tho. I think Bert has earned a top 9 role. Would love to see the future stars get more top 9 ice time and the older guys moved down. Could definitely work. Without Z, Nielsen becomes the best 2 way C on the team, so putting him with 2 wingers who are out there to score isn't a bad idea. He's also good enough offensively to contribute there as well. I predict that Nielsen's numbers jump significantly this season if put in as 2C and getting finishers on his wings.

exactly This.I think they'll be the Sharks or the Caps until last season. Which is good actually. Leafs fans have become numb to the sting of being bottom dwellers for so long that they are starting to become cocky again. What needs to happen is that they become a team on the cusp for awhile, but never quite makes it over the hump. This would create a new kind of torture for Leafs fans and knock them back down a few notches. Make LGW great again. Let's build a firewall that keeps all of the illegal memes out. Really the only reason I would like to Z come back, even if its later in the season. After all he's meant for this team, seeing him fall short of that mark is unsatisfying. SMH

With Zadina-AA-Vanek, you have a rookie, a C with a reputation for not playing a 2 way game, and a veteran who does best in an offensive role. I have to agree that putting all 3 on the same line would be a concern. Abby isn't exactly a defensive juggernaut, but I would feel more comfortable with a less offensive guy on that line to focus more on defense, so the other 2 can generate offense.

"Hockeytown" isn't defined by how many local fans show up to games. It's as much about the organization and the overall following outside of SE Michigan as well. 11 Stanley Cups (more than any other US based team), original 6 team, 25 straight years in the playoffs, 92 years in the NHL, the franchise that the rest of the league has modeled themselves after (and poached repeatedly). All of these are what makes it "Hockeytown". It's not just about Detroit. It's bigger than that. The term "Hockeytown" is a microcosm of a global phenomenon.

It is weird how some American Indians embrace the use of their tribal or national names in sports (Florida State Seminoles) and how others seem to be offended by it and try to remove it (North Dakota Fighting Sioux). I see the validity in arguing against using names like "Redskins" for example. But removing any other references to American Indian heritage like "Indians" or "Braves" or even "Totems" and removing mascots and characters of an Indian heritage seems too far IMO. As long as the purpose of these team names are to honor our Native American past, and as long as those of American Indian heritage living in the area where the teams are based are not bothered by it, then changing it is just PC run amok and an example of people being offended for others needlessly.
