Official 2018 NHL Amateur Entry Draft Discussion Thread

So the kid is clearly an idiot. Don't need anymore "dumb" hockey players on this team. And yes, THIS IS SARCASM!!! Great, another name I can't pronounce. Cant't wait for the Kotkaniemi-Athanasiou-Abdelkader-Cholowski-Saarajarvi Powerplay. -
"Tie goes to the vet" isn't as "black and white" as some of you seem to think it is. If a kid and veteran perform equally, the tie absolutely should go to the vet. The vet has proven he can perform at that level for an entire season, the kid hasn't. Plus the vet has "paid his dues" and "put in his time" so to speak. He absolutely deserves the benefits that come with that. Winning a tie is one of those benefits. Even if a kid temporarily, slightly outperforms a vet, the kid is the only one who can be sent down without having to clear waivers and potentially be claimed. So unless he just absolutely blows the doors off of roster veterans, he's going back down. That's roster management and every team does this, not just the Wings. Keep in mind that the veterans that are being given the benefit also had to work their way onto the roster at one point themselves. It's not like they were just given a spot. They had to fight thru the vets in front of them on the roster when they were kids. It's a process, and the kids should understand this. Besides, at least the kids see this and understand that they will get the same preferential treatment when they are the vets on the team. The message is clear: work hard, pay your dues, fight thru the obstacles in front of you, earn it, and then reap the rewards. Nothing wrong with that.

You would miss us, admit it. That said I do want to say that I apologize for anything I have said in here that was insensitive, or worse, offensive to anyone. Even though I disagree with you guys sometimes, I really do respect all of you and your opinions, even when I am clearly right and you are clearly wrong. If we all agreed on everything we would have nothing to discuss and it would be really boring in here. I am not jut saying this in the hope that it somehow saves my butt (which I do), but because it's the right thing to do, and I don't know if I'll get the chance to say it later. So if I'm not around anymore, keep up the good work everyone and: The other side is better. They would have to make his avatar smaller. -

I think the emoji makes it clear that I was joking. I have never been Anti-Holland and I usually point it out when others are unreasonably critical of him. Sarcastic posts like that are one way I do it without singling people out. My 1000+ posts reflect that. -

https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2018/6/14/17464236/red-wings-to-hold-2018-development-camp-at-little-caesars-arena DETROIT, Mich — It appears some big changes are in store for the Red Wings annual development camp. The event, which is usually held at Centre Ice in Traverse City, will take place at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit. Tuesday, June 26th thru Saturday, June 30th http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2018/06/detroit_red_wings_reveal_devel.html By Ansar Khan akhan1@mlive.com The Detroit Red Wings are holding their annual development camp at the Belfor Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena this year, and fans can attend for free. The camp, which features most of the organization's prospects, including the players they will draft next week, takes place June 26-30 with on-ice skill development and off-ice workouts each day, culminated by a scrimmage on the final day. Players will be divided into two groups - Team Howe and Team Lindsay. The Grand Rapids Griffins coaching staff and Red Wings player development staff will conduct the drills. The complete roster will be released following the draft on June 22-23, but the participants will include players selected over the past several entry drafts, including 2017 top pick Michael Rasmussen and 2016 top selection Dennis Cholowski, as well as signed free agent prospects and undrafted free agents from collegiate, junior or European leagues. Tickets for development camp are free and available in limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis by clicking here and entering "PUBLIC" as the promo code. Fans may reserve up to four tickets for each day. There will be meet-and-greet opportunities and player autograph sessions. Further information about fan-friendly events held at Little Caesars Arena in conjunction with development camp will be announced at a later date. It appears that even tho the Development Camp will be held at LCA, the Prospect Tournament and Training Camp will still be held in TC. http://upnorthlive.com/sports/content/red-wings-and-centre-ice-reach-a-new-deal-for-training-camp Traverse City, MI – Following a commitment from the Detroit Red Wings to return to Traverse City for multiple years coupled with a financial investment in community benefit from Traverse City Tourism, Centre Ice Arena has agreed to move forward with costly rink renovations mandated by the NHL for any ice rink hosting events involving National Hockey League teams. Upon completion, Centre Ice will be one of only a few public use rinks in the country featuring such enhancements which will provide a safer environment for athletes and spectators alike. Renovations to the rinks at Centre Ice are scheduled to begin in May 2018 and are expected to be complete in early June of 2018. http://www.accesshockeymi.com/index.php/2018/05/25/updated-photos-centre-ice-arena-red-wings-training-camp-arena/ UPDATED PHOTOS | WEST RINK FINISHED -

Did someone say "HUGE PACKAGE"? Found this on the ol' interwebs today: https://www.mlive.com/expo/sports/erry-2018/06/cf2bd27a935492/red_wings_top_prospects_when_w.html Michael Rasmussen Timeline to NHL: The Red Wings are counting on Rasmussen to make the team in training camp. They plan to ease his transition to the NHL by starting him on wing, like they did with Dylan Larkin as a rookie in 2015-16. If Rasmussen isn’t ready for the NHL he will return to Tri-City for his final junior season. He is not eligible to play in the AHL in 2018-19. Evgeny Svechnikov Timeline to NHL: Barring a spectacular showing in training camp and the preseason, Svechnikov will start the season in Grand Rapids and likely will be recalled at some point. It is his final waiver-exempt season. Starting in 2019-20, he’s in the NHL to stay. Filip Hronek Timeline to NHL: He will compete for a roster spot in training camp, likely with Joe Hicketts. Hronek’s right shot could help the power play. The Red Wings hope to have one defenseman from Grand Rapids on their season-opening roster, but only if they’re playing regularly. Their odds increase if Mike Green isn’t re-signed and the team doesn’t ink another veteran free-agent defenseman. Dennis Cholowski Timeline to NHL: The Red Wings want Cholowski to make a push for a job in training camp, but more experienced defensemen Filip Hronek and Joe Hicketts likely are ahead of him in the pecking order. It’s difficult, especially for a defenseman, to jump from juniors to the NHL. Cholowski likely will need at least one season in Grand Rapids before seriously competing for a roster spot in 2019-20. David Pope Timeline to NHL: He’ll have an opportunity to earn a roster spot in training camp, but unless the Red Wings have multiple injuries among their top nine forwards, Pope likely will start the season in Grand Rapids. His performance there will dictate whether he gets a look in Detroit during the season. He should be more poised to compete for a spot in 2019-20. Libor Sulak Timeline to NHL: Mobile defenseman who likely will need some time in the AHL to get accustomed to the smaller North American rinks. He’s behind Filip Hronek and Joe Hicketts on the depth chart. Injuries and his performance in Grand Rapids will dictate whether he gets an opportunity in Detroit during the season. Might be ready to compete for a job in 2019-20. Joe Hicketts Timeline to NHL: He’ll be competing with Filip Hronek for a spot on the season-opening roster. If Hicketts starts in Grand Rapids, chances are he’ll get a look in Detroit at some point during the season, his final year of waiver-exempt status. Givani Smith Timeline to NHL: A big, abrasive forward with some scoring ability, Smith will begin his pro career in Grand Rapids next season. Chances are, he’ll need at least a couple of seasons in the AHL before making a serious push for a Red Wings roster spot. Filip Larsson Timeline to NHL: Larsson will play at the University of Denver next season. He might spend two years in college before turning pro and joining Grand Rapids. It can be difficult to predict when a goaltender is NHL-ready. Larsson, who turns 20 in August, is probably at least three years away. Vili Saarijarvi Timeline to NHL: He’ll probably need two more seasons in Grand Rapids before seriously challenging for a roster spot in Detroit. -
In a straight up comparison, I would certainly choose Carlson over Green. But with all facts considered, I would rather see Green signed than Carlson. Why? Green is much older, yes, but on only a max 2 year deal, he is the safer and cheaper bet. I would consider Carlson on a max 6 year deal at 7 mil AAV, but he'll get more than that somewhere else. We have to remember that by the time this team is a contender again Carlson will be on the downslide. He may still be a serviceable defenseman then, but his cap hit could hurt the team's ability to re-sign core players at a time when the team is on an upswing. Unless a guy is a true, young, "building block" like Larkin or Ras, we shouldn't be signing 28 year-olds to long term contracts. It's too much of a risk for a team in rebuild mode.

Funny like LOL? No. But I can appreciate someone's creative attempt at humor, even if it's in bad taste. Something doesn't have to be in good taste to be humorous. I agree. There has to be more to the story than what is being reported. A normal human being doesn't just develop irrational hatred for another person (like Ken Holland) without something "sparking it". What it was? Who knows. And we may never know, which may be for the best. Not every salacious detail needs to be made public. That said, the Karlsson's have their side and Hoffman and his GF have theirs. The true probably lies somewhere in the middle. I am reserving judgment for now. -

No they don't. Yes, they are. If they were paid more in line with what middle 6 wingers make (Abby) and 3rd line defensive specialists make (Helm), Holland would have absolutely no problem trading either one without a NTC. While just about everyone agrees with the "overpaid" argument, the only ones who think they actually suck are LGWers, and I can think of about 30 other teams who would disagree with that assessment. BTW, just out of curiosity, why does everyone seem to prefer Bean over Hanifin? If I could choose between them,I would choose Hanifin. -

http://thefederalist.com/2017/07/12/whataboutism-charge-dishonest/ Condemning [one's] bad behavior shouldn’t inhibit anyone from pointing out the duplicity and partisan aims of [opposers] who are attempting to gain back power. Those people are part of the equation, as well. In the same way the past doesn’t excuse [new guy's] actions, his actions don’t excuse the behavior of his antagonists. Charges of whataboutism are often used to shut that discussion down. Moreover, the idea that Americans should [debate] without any historical context is a brand new, and utterly absurd, demand. Despite what you have heard, history did not start on January 21. NPR’s narrow definition of whataboutism. It says, “’whataboutism’ is an attractive tactic for populists allowing them to be vague but also appear straight-talking from what’s happening now.” Yes, it’s also an attractive word for partisans to throw around when they realize their past positions undermine their credibility. Folks who complain to me about “whataboutism” have a weird propensity to lecture me about historical precedents. Can we talk about the past or not? At the end of the day, it’s best to take consistent positions always support strengthening the separation of power. If you were cheering on the last [guy] as these standards were being corroded, your laments about abuse of power can’t be taken very seriously. We can’t keep changing the rules every time it’s convenient [...] then cry whataboutism when someone points it out. [...] = politically charged word's that I removed from the article Even if someone is guilty of "whataboutism" or "Tu quoque", it doesn't mean that hypocrisy hasn't been committed, and pointing out one's hypocrisy shouldn't be dismissed as "argumentum ad hominem". It also is hypocritical to condemn someone else for using logical fallacies while simultaneously committing other forms of ad hominem, particularly "guilt by association" as well as confirmation bias. -

Not necessarily. It wouldn't matter to me if there were 18 solid D prospects in the system. If you have a guy who truly wants to be here (not a money chaser), who was just selected to the All-Star team, and is willing to take a shorter term, cost effective contract, then you absolutely sign that guy. Period. If that "blocks" an NHL ready kid from making the roster, than you make room by getting rid of other dead weight. If anyone is blocking Hronek, Cholowski, #6...it's guys like Jensen, HIcketts, and Ouellet, not Green. True, but from all of the articles I've read about Green, his comments seem genuine to me, not contrived. He's not the "grass is greener" type (no pun intended). I really think he truly would like to finish his career as a Red Wing, and as long as he's playing at or above his contract, I welcome it.

Fun facts about Nielsen: (from Reddit) Frans Nielsen would have led the Red Wings in points if he had played for us in 16-17. He had 52 points and our team leader Zetterberg had 50. Nielsen interview from TSN (Summer 2017): something special about Detroit likes mix of young/old talent wanted to win excited about way DRW play game Nielsen interview on NHL XM Radio (Summer 2017): Tough not to listen when a team like DRW calls you Was really excited when DRW called With Datsyuk leaving, thought he had a good spot/be a good fit top-6 in DET "Zetterberg has always been my idol, favorite player" Had worked out with Z in summers, was blown away at how hard he works. Wants to be like him. Wife is due end of August. Staying in NY this summer, instead of going back to Europe (like usually does in summers) "Can't wait, really excited, can't explain how excited I am" This is why I think he's here to stay. -

https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2016/9/10/12867420/darren-helm-no-trade-clause-with-the-red-wings-is-weird Darren Helm’s NTC kicks in immediately and goes through the first three seasons of the deal (through 2018-19) with no modification. Only Helm waiving this clause would allow him to be traded. If the Red Wings miss the playoffs in the 2018-19 season OR if Helm isn’t among the top 9 forwards on the team in terms of total ice time, then he will have no NTC protection between June 15th of 2019 and the trade deadline of the 2019-20 season (Year four of the deal). If the Red Wings miss the playoffs in the 2019-20 season OR if Helm isn’t among the top 9 forwards in terms of TOI, then his NTC is void from June 15, 2020 throughout the remainder of the contract (June 30, 2021). Another consideration to this is that this clause is strictly no-trade and does not have a no-movement consideration to it. While I wouldn’t be surprised if Helm is protected in the upcoming Las Vegas expansion draft, the Red Wings will not be required to do so, either in that draft or a potential upcoming [Seattle] expansion draft that’s likely to happen during the term of the Helm contract. Helm’s lack of NMC also means he won’t have any protection against the team putting him on waivers for another team to claim or for the purpose of assigning him to Grand Rapids if need be. ICYMI, Abdelkader’s NTC works the exact same way, except the modifications kick in for the final three seasons. So in other words, I was wrong in my earlier post. They do not have to be protected in an expansion draft and can be claimed by Seattle, which is unlikely. If their NTC's are still active after this season tho, that would make it unlikely that they would be traded before the next expansion draft. I mean Holland could throw Seattle an asset in a trade in order to get them to take Helm or Abby in the draft, but at this point I would rather keep our picks and prospects and ride out their contracts. Unless of course KH is the Seattle GM, in which case I am sure he would pick one of them in the expansion draft without the Wings having to give up anything in exchange. Problem solved. -
