2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread

If by Mr. T, you mean Mr. Trump, I can assure you that I am neither a supporter nor would I waste my time following him on twitter. My criticism of Smith-Pelly has nothing to do with the President personally. It's about showing someone who is in a position of honor and privilege, the proper respect that comes with that position. Regardless of how one feels about the man himself, he is still the President and there should be a level of etiquette and decorum for such a person. I wouldn't define being disrespectful. dishonorable, and hateful toward ANYONE, let alone a superior authority as "Progress". If that's what "Progress" is, then I want nothing to do with it. If by Mr. T, you are referring to the actor formerly known as Laurence Tureaud, then yes, I am a fan. I still watch the A-Team any time it's on TV. Hypothetical question; who wins in a cage fight? That's exactly the problem I have with what Smith-Pelly is doing. He's taking something that is "ceremonial" and making it political. There is a time and a place for all things. Progress is not made when you choose to use the wrong time and place to push an agenda, no matter how noble or popular it may be. You can't expect to win people over by offending them. You can't create constructive dialogue thru divisive actions. People that already hate Trump will applaud what he is doing and people that support Trump will only hate what he is doing. That's division, not coming together. There is nothing wrong with criticizing the President. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with his policies. But when you choose the wrong opportunities to do so, you are more likely to create more enemies than allies, not just in society as a whole, but among your teammates and fans too. That's not helpful. He certainly shouldn't be forced to go if he doesn't want to, but there is a way to go about it without drawing undue attention. Progress, like time, moves at its own pace, you can't just speed it up to suit your needs. And in many ways, "progress" is only repeating the same mistakes that our ancestors already figured out long ago. -

Kinda my point. Stop making it about you and your political/social beliefs. Don't make it personal. Can you just put the politics aside and just enjoy the experience with your teammates? You have 364 other days out of the year to hate on the President.. Put aside your differences for one day for the benefit of your team. Is that too much to ask? And disagreeing with what Smith-Pelly is doing doesn't make someone a Trump apologist either. I didn't like when Tim Thomas did it either for the same reason. You can still respect the tradition and your teammates by showing up, that doesn't mean you support Trump or even agree with him if you do. In fact, it makes you look like a grown up who understands the difference between respecting the office and respecting the man, instead of looking like a petulant child who has to throw a public tantrum in order to draw attention to themselves. When will people learn that this kind of behavior does more harm than good? -

Aren't any Russians on those teams. I remember when teams/players went to the White House, did the photo op, gave the President a jersey, and went home. Personal politics had nothing to do with it. It was a formal, customary occasion that players did not only out of respect for the tradition, but respect for the office of the Presidency, regardless of who occupied the Oval Office. Now it seems like personal grievance has become more important than mutual respect. It's sad really. https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/capitals-smith-pelly-speaks-trump/ This is exactly what I am talking about. Being invited to the White House to meet the President (regardless of who it is) is part of the Stanley Cup experience, and is an honor that is only granted to a few dozen NHL players, coaches, trainers, etc.. each year. By publicly denouncing the President and then boycotting the appearance is not only disrespectful to the President, but also to his own teammates. We all know what the headline will now be now: "Black Capitals Player Boycotts White House Visit" or "Smith-Pelly Skips Presidential Visit and Denounces President"; when instead the Headlines should be "Washington Capitals Celebrate Stanley Cup Victory with Presidential Visit" or "Trump Welcomes Stanley Cup Champions to the White House" It's a selfish move for Smith-Pelly to do that. What should be a positive, celebratory event for the TEAM is now going to become a disgraceful, political opportunity to give the press more ammunition to attack the President with. Is nothing sacred anymore? -

Agree with all of this, but it's Holland we're talking about here. I know his direction has changed supposedly, but I would be surprised if he didn't just re-up E. It's his way, and there is something to be said about team chemistry. It might be better to keep a guy that fits as a depth D, than bring in a new guy, especially with a young locker room. It would be a depth move at that point, so MEH. Of course a lot of this depends on what KH does at the draft. If he doesn't draft a D at 6, that would be one less D on the roster in 2-3 years. Agree about DD too. He would be my other veteran . Cholowski - #6, DD - Hronek, Hicketts - Saarajarvi/Lindstrom, #7 = Ericsson Ouellet and Jensen = traded, Kronwall = retired, Daley and Green = UFA -

Agreed. I would prefer Daley too. They are both roughly the same age. Their contracts both end at the end of the 2019-20 season. I don't think Daley makes it to the end of his contract tho. His salary is almost half of Ericsson's, so he'll be easier to trade in the final year (both have modified NTC). I suppose they could just let E walk and re-sign TD as a free agent, but I think they re-sign E instead. -

Let's assume that all of Cholowski, Hronek, Saarajarvi, and maybe one other current prospect (Lindstrom) make the roster in the next 2-3 years. IF Holland drafts a D with #6 who also cracks the lineup, that's 5 D. You'll still need preferably 1 or 2 vets to fill out the D. Kronwall, Daley, and Green will presumably be gone by then or retired. Ericsson will still be around 36 or 37 at the time so I don't think it would be a horrible idea to re-sign him to a short term, cheap deal. -

https://www.today.com/parents/capitals-t-j-oshie-offers-tearful-tribute-dad-alzheimer-s-t130509 The father of Washington Capitals right wing T.J. Oshie struggles with his memory due to Alzheimer's disease, so his son did his best to give him a night the two of them will never forget. "My dad, he doesn't remember a lot of stuff these days,'' Oshie, 31, told NBC Sports as he choked back tears. "But ... this one will stick with him forever, you can guarantee that." "You bet your ass he's gonna remember this one,'' Oshie told Canada's Sportsnet. -

If any of the younger guys being mentioned were NHL ready, Holland would have no reason to go out and sign free agents or re-up unnecessary roster players. Rookies and prospects on ELC's are cheap. If they were truly NHL ready they would be on the roster. Why spend more for a vet when you can just play a cheaper kid? -

1. True statement. Those teams were more balanced RH-LH than the team is now. 2. Downey + McCarty + Samuelsson + Maltby + Rafalski + Chelios = 6 RH. Frk + Glendening + Witkowski + Green + Jensen = 5 RH. 6 > 5. My statement was correct. 3. Again, this is a true statement. One can argue the importance that handedness had to do with it, but that doesn't make what I said "wrong". I was simply making an observation and stating that observation. Nowhere did I say that we had more success BECAUSE we had a more balanced right to left ratio during those seasons. FACT: Only 35% of NHLers are RH, yet 15 of the top 25 NHL scorers of all time (60%) were right handed. FACT: 7 of the top 10 scorers (70%) among Dmen in 2018 were righties, including the top 3. 6 of the top 12 forwards in scoring were RH (50%) in 2018. You can argue that this is all coincidence if you want to, but I disagree. -
