1. We're not a playoff team. 2. Both Abby's and Nyquist's scoring puts them at a 2nd line pace, not 3rd. 3. Nielsen: He's being slotted at the 3C spot and still putting up respectable numbers. If he was slotted higher with better wingers he would put up more points. Not his fault he's being used where he is. He wasn't signed to be the 3rd line center. As I've said before, he was brought in to center the 2nd line, we had no 2C at the time. There was no one else in the system then to fill that hole. Even if Larkin could move to center (unknown at the time) he would just be replacing Z essentially. The team had no long term solution at 2C. Free agency was the only option there. Plus the streak was still a thing, so there's no way KH was going to leave a hole at 2C, and Nielsen was the best option at the time. Was signing him to a 6 year deal ideal? No. But when your team is closing in on a 30 year playoff run, and the talent level is treading water as it is, you may have to give up more than you'd like during contract negotiations to fill a position of need, particularly when ur options are limited. If "the streak" ended the year before, Nielsen wouldn't be in Detroit. We can argue the validity of "the streak" all day long. But the Nielsen contract was the right thing to do if that was the strategy. -
Yes. If all it took to get Hanifin is #6 overall, I would definitely do it. He is the exact type of defenseman that I would hope any of Dobson/Bouchard/Hughes/Boqvist turns out to be. Plus he's only 21 so it's not like he's that much older than any of those guys either. If the offer from Carolina was Hanifin for #6 overall straight up, I do it. But, I think Carolina would want more in return. After all, why would they give up a sure thing for a kid who MAY turn out to be better Hanifin, but may not. That wouldn't be enough to get both. Throw in 30th or AA, and that might do it. And yes, I would do that. #6 + #30 + Svech or AA for both Hanifin + Faulk + pick #104

“I believe that the Canucks have shown interest in Hanifin, and I believe that whatever they’ve talked about the Hurricanes haven’t discounted it. Look, I know this is going to go bananas. I’m just going to say this is my guess. My guess is it involves the seventh overall pick, but I don’t know that for sure.” “If I knew what I know about Noah Hanifin and I believe he’s going to play for a long time – and I believe he will, barring injuries – I think that if that is what Vancouver is going to have to give up, I would be seriously considering it.” “If you’re talking about a guy who says, ‘No, I want a two-year bridge deal,’ I don’t know if I’m gambling the No. 7 pick on that,” said Friedman. “But if you have a guy here that’s willing to take term, I’ll tell you this – I’m probably doing it.” Faulk, who is also likely garnering a fair bit of trade interest, has two seasons left on his pact with a cap hit a shade over $4.83 million. The defenseman has no trade protection written into his deal. You know what's better than 7th overall for Hanifin? 6th overall. AA or Svech plus a 2nd for Faulk.

JT will only get that from NYI cuz only they can sign him to an 8 year deal. That extra year allows them to pay him a slightly less AAV. If he signs anywhere else,he is getting 11-12, I gare-own-tee. -

I actually think keeping Hronek in GR is best for his development right now. He'll hopefully turn out to be more than a depth defenseman. If that's the case, then he needs big minutes over a lot of games against competition he can handle. He'll get that in GR. Not with the big boys. Bringing him up now either means he gets sheltered minutes or he gets absolutely destroyed by NHL competition considering who his D partners would be. Neither scenario would be good for his development IMO. -

Abby is youngish, wears an "A", can play on a scoring line or a checking line and the PP. I think there would have been interest from Vegas even with that contract. As for Nielsen, they could have seen him as a 2C. Good, 2way , veteran forward. Again, contract aside, its easier to work around contracts when u r bringing everyone at once. -

the Wings were halfway between Cup wins in 2005. When you are in contender mode and you give up draft picks to be more competitive, you have fewer picks to score with. This is exactly the scenario where you should be "swinging for the fences." You can afford to take chances at that point. You play it safe when you are in rebuild mode, like now. I hate hindsight. If only I had picked numbers 1, 21, 31, 45, 49, 21 I would have won the last powerball and 60 million dollars. I didn't, so I will over-analyze my number choices and ridicule myself for picking what I should have known would be the wrong numbers. -

1st bold: We'll have to disagree here. He played 331 games over 7 seasons in the NHL. I don't consider that a "bust". If he was the 5th ranked European that year, then I would say that picking him at 19th would have been considered a steal. If a player ranked that high drops that far, you take him. I wouldn't fault Holland at all for that. 2nd bold: If you truly believe that they'll pick who is best at 6th, then you shouldn't be worried about a Michigan/Sweden thing. 3rd bold: Yes they do. So let's not get too worked up about it. Not yet anyway. I thought Nill was a much better GM than Holland tho. At least that's what I heard. -
He is going to Seattle in the expansion draft, right?

Very selective examples here. You mention these 4 former 1st rounders as reasons why Holland can't draft. 1. All were drafted prior to 2011, back when the team was more competitive. All 4 were in the bottom half of the first round (19th, 27th, 30th, 21st). We all know that these guys are bigger risks. It's not like Holland missed on a top ten pick here. 2. 3 out of the 4 played significant time in the NHL, so they weren't "flops" or "busts", despite your narratives. 3. Sheahan is still in the league as a serviceable 3C at only a 1.05 mil salary. Not bad for a guy that everyone predicted as a bottom 6 F even before he was drafted. 4. You conveniently left out all of the 1st round draft picks since 2010. Rasmussen (9th), Cholowski (20th), Svechnikov (19th), Larkin (15th), and Mantha (20th). All of whom either are, or will become, major parts of this team's rebuild - Literally every 1st rounder drafted since Sheahan. Not one "bust". But I guess they don't fit the Anti-Holland agenda so they weren't mentioned. -

Both Abby and Nielsen are better players than Nosek. If either had been left unprotected, they clearly would have been picked over him. You complain about other teams "gifting" Vegas better players and then you complain that we didn't. I don't get where ur coming from anymore.
