I think you're more optimistic than I am. While I think he'll be a valuable defensive forward, I think Draper would be a huge reach. Draper showed some offensive skills in juniors, IIRC. Ehn has never shown that. I think 3rd line C is a reach too. I think a reliable, cost effective 4C is probably where he ends up.

Larkin wont be on par with the last 3 captains for sure. But I don't think he has to be.

I'm not really excited about either option. Either way, I think we're missing one more high end forward. We could draft another one next year, assuming that we're a lottery team again. But I think I would go D next year. I think LD on the top pair becomes the biggest need. If Toews can be a 1C with Kane on his wing, Larkin could be a 1C with Lafreniere on his wing.

You expect minimal offense out of defensive players. Defensive forwards are playing essentially the same role as defensive dmen. Noone complains if dmen don't score. I don't see why defensive forwards should be held to a higher standard.

Byfield-Larkin-Veleno down the middle would be great, but it leaves us a little light on the wings. Zadina, Mantha, Bert, and Moose as the top 4 wingers is about as exciting as Larkin-Veleno-Moose down the middle if Laff is the pick. Which would you rather have as your top 6? 1. Lafreniere/Stutzle-Larkin-Mantha Bert-Veleno-Zadina 2. Bert-Byfield/Rossi-Mantha Moose-Larkin-Zadina

No. I'm saying of all the prospects being talked about, he's the one I see as the most likely to not pan out. And if he was picked in the top 4 (which our pick will be), that would be a bust when you consider the potential that several other players could reach in this draft. Zadina was picked at 6 and is already a top 6 F at 20 yo. Not the same.

But Zadina is real tho. So I don't see how that's an insult. That would be a more appropriate costume for Riley Sheahan then.

Is Ehn replaceable? Yes. Everyone on this team is. That doesn't mean he isn't good at what he does. Defensive guys are a thing. They have value. Would he clear waivers? H-E-double hockey sticks, No! Ehn is a far better player than Andersson or Emmerton. Those guys were mediocre across the board. They weren't good enough on either side of the puck to keep an NHL job. Ehn at least plays a solid enough defensive game at a high enough level to stick. Will Ehn ever become more productive offensively? Who cares? He's not out there to score goals. His job is to stop the other guys from scoring. As long as he can do that, what reason does anyone have to criticize? Will he be as good as Glendening? IDK. He'll probably end up as a 4th line, defensive specialist and penalty killer, good for 20-30 points a season. That's all he needs to be. Nothing more.

Offense pays more than defense. The salary cap does not allow for teams to carry 4 lines of decent offense anymore. Teams are forced to carry cheaper forwards on the team now. That usually means defensive guys.

4th liners in general are defensive players (like Ehn). If they were any good at offense they wouldn't be on the 4th line. No one has the depth to ice 12 forwards with offensive abilities. You need defensive and PK specialists too. Ehn is perfectly suited for that role and does a good job. Reasonable fans appreciate the "blue collar" guys too, and aren't solely focused on the shiny/flashy guys.

Case in point. I just don't understand the logic that a player who isn't a top 6 F, top 4 D, or starting G doesn't deserve appreciation. The guy comes to work every game and gives 100%, even when the rest of the team doesn't seem to give a s***. And you need guys like that in your team. He may be replaceable, but that doesn't mean he's worthless or useless. Yes. Drew Miller would be an accurate comparison.

Considering he was a 7th round pick, I'd say it's miraculous that he made it at all. N is the most underappreciated Red Wing.

Wings were a dynasty for more than 2 decades. Everyone knows that a decline was inevitable. No reason to think they won't get there again. I would imagine being a part of that would make Detroit more desirable among the lottery teams.

My picks, in order of preference, would be: 1. Lafreniere 2. Byfield 3. Rossi 4. Stutzle

Depends on the draft. If we draft a future 1C, then I say yes as we're short an elite winger. If we draft Lafreniere, I wouldn't sign Hall. We'll have filled the wings on the top 2 lines and I would rather use that money to sign another 1/2 C.
