I would be happy with a couple of Tatars right now.

Some pretty big names available: Pietrangelo, Krug, Barrie, Schultz, Bogosian. All of them 28 or 29. Pietrangelo will be too expensive. I think someone massively overpays for Barrie. Bogo is another rightie and we really could use more help on the left side (feels weird saying that). Same with Schultz. I would still pursue Krug tho. A 5 year deal puts him at 33/34 when it expires and at least we get that top pair D on the left side we need. Muzzin is already 30. Might be a little too old for this roster TBH. I think Edmundson would be a good fit if no Krug. He's big. He's young. He's physical. Still has the potential to be a 2nd pair defensive defenseman. Seems like the kind of guy SY would take a flyer on. I think Yzerman has to go UFA for at least 1 dman.

UFAs not re-signed: Green, Daley, Ericsson, Biega Hronek, Seider, and Bowey (RFA) down the right side. Nemeth, Dekeyser, Cholowski down the left. Could really use some help on LD. Krug I'm sure would be the #1 target, if available, and would be top pair. A lesser option would be Muzzin, 2nd pair D, tho. A quieter, less notable option would be Joel Edmundson. Only 26, and could be signed for less than Ericsson. Plus he brings elements that we always wished E had.

If Larkin is a 2C, then there must be 31 centers in the NHL better than him. I don't know enough about other teams center to attempt to guess, but I will say this: if Larkin can be a consistent 70 point producer, than he would be a 1C. No real argument there.

Based on what most reasonable people would consider a "bust", yes, you have. Busts are a very rare thing. If Zadina qualifies as one, then its not. There have been many early first round picks that played solid, if not exceptional, NHL careers that no one would consider "busts". Thanks for making me get out the dictionary.

If they were on something, like cocaine or meth, I would expect to see them flying off the boards, skating around like madmen, and just buzzing all over the other teams like a swarm of bees. Bringing up the youth and bringing in a new coach is not going to move this team completely out of the basement. They only need to finish one point worse than the 2nd to last place team to get the best odds (which aren't that good anyway) of getting 1st overall. I see no harm in bringing in Laviolette and bringing up the kids, even if it means a small improvement in the standings, at this point. Bring in some positivity and a hopeful future to a team that clearly needs it, that's a good thing. Team improvement, increased morale, and finishing the season in a positive state doesn't have to mean sacrificing 1st overall. I don't understand the idea that this team must be a loathsome, embarrassing, negativity train to MAYBE get Lafreniere. They could be all of that and still wind up picking 4th anyway. Why not bring in some new blood, make some positive strides towards next season, still finish as a lottery team, and hope we get lucky in the draft this year?

Agreed. This would be a good hire. When a HC does well with lower payroll, smaller market teams, it tells me they're good at squeezing lemonade out of lemons. This team could use that right now.
