LOL Touche I think we get a 2nd for taking the Backes deal. If you want a 1st, you have to sweeten the pot. And Ryan Kuffner doesn't sweeten jack shat. Conversely, I don't think AA or Fabbri get you much more than a 2nd in a trade. If you want to upgrade to a 1st? You'd have to take that Backes contract.

Top 5 pick again next year. Guaranteed.

When Darren Helm is playing elsewhere next March I will cry myself to sleep thinking about those 5 lost seasons @4M per + NTC we could have enjoyed if Kenny was still around. Wake me when something bad like this happens. Until then, it's just Yzerman dikkking around with disposable parts.

I'd just like to remind everyone that we'll 100% be picking top 5 again next year. It's tempting, after this heinous season, to want this draft to be epic. I get it. But I like to look at it like we'll come out of the next two drafts with either two elite/high end forwards or defensemen or a combo of the two. Maybe throw a goalie in there as well. But I benefit from knowing that it'll be 5 years before this team sniffs at success again. By then, the cupboards will be stacked with goodies.

Take Lafreniere/Byfield/Stutzle/Rossi this year. Take Luke Hughes next year. Find a long term goalie solution. Rebuild (mostly) over.
