Considering the "old friend" comment that was made by Kenny in Ansar Khan's article, I compiled a list of former Wings that are free agents right now. Bertuzzi, Bootland, Mowers, Williams, Avery, Shanahan, Lapointe, Taylor, and Fedorov. Old friends, eh? Let's eliminate a few names that I wouldn't consider "old friends." With only the players worth mentioning to get the fans excited, the list becomes: Bertuzzi, Avery, Shanahan, Lapointe, and Fedorov. I can see 2 of these 5 coming here with a total salary of under 2.5 mil each. Avery will want cash as will Bert. Shanny, Marty, and Feds know their worth and know that they will fit in the system, not be the center of it. All of them have positives and negatives associated with them. Feds and Shanny are PP specialists with a lot of experience in a defensive system, and Feds is one of the best 2 way players in the history of the game, but they are both aged. Lapointe is strictly a 3rd or 4th line agitator with limited offensive ability, but good leadership. Bert, when healthy, is an offensive threat. But health is a HUGE issue. Avery is the biggest paradox. I like him as a center of attention for the other team, he skates hard and can hit and fight. I loved him when he was a Wing. But, off ice is another issue, and I don't like "divers" on the Wings.

If he goes to Philly we should go after Avery. Balance in the universe, Philly gets a class act and we get a douchebag... that I like to watch play for the entertainment of it.

Also possible, since Babs wants the Mule to be a power forward with his own line. Get the Mule's faceoff skills up and pair him with 2 snipers with playmaking skills.

Assuming we overload the 1st line, which I think Babs would not do unless in a desperate situation. I think Hossa is a SOLID winger for the second line. If it ain't broke... As for the PP. The ZDH line is the cream of the crop. The second unit is the problem, and Hossa is an answer. I still think that Homer is the premiere goalie agitator in the league, Franzen is unproven (although spectacular for the last 3 months of the season and post). One of them will be gone by midnight. But I don't think they will get all of the offers and have a decision made for at least a week. So I say 10 days before all the big names listed are gone.

Trying to stay on the team??? What I was referring to was players like Laraque, Probert, Kocur, and the like who are on the team for the specific reason of fighting.

The fact is that the Wings haven't had an "enforcer" since Stu Grimson. They have had fighters, but no enforcers. Mac and Downey are Anti-Enforcers. They are the people that the other team's enforcer goes after to start a fight, and they are the guys that start fights after cheapshots or big hits on star players. They themselves will not start a fight for no reason, like enforcers typically do. The Wings roster has no room for weakness. Every line must be fast and able to create scoring chances.

3 words to describe my POV: Defense. Wins. Championships.

If he leaves they might as well move the franchise. They will be in last place by a LOT. I wouldn't mind seeing him on the Wings. He is a smart player and good with the puck. He would be a good replacement for Stu if he leaves. But he will want good money, probably more than what Stu will want.

The Wings biggest challenge in the Central is themselves. They play the teams 8 times and they seem to just coast against them. But the 2nd best team in the Central on paper (right now) is Chicago. Columbus lost a lot and so did Nashville. Kane and Towes will be better next season as will their other young players. But with a few signings anyone can be #2. As for the entire conference, it has to be either Dallas, SJ, or Anaheim. Those are the obvious ones. But I think Calgary will be a lot better next season. Honestly, I don't care about the east. But Washington will be better next season and AO has no where to go but up. Pitt seems to have had their chance in the sun and unless they do something spectacular this summer or at the deadline they will struggle to make the postseason.

Big difference. Everyone knew Franzen was having head injury symptoms. Lebda was perfectly healthy and got ran. Yeah, I hated Drake for that play but it happens in hockey. What Roberts did was below anything a respectable hockey player should be doing.

I think he is ready for 20 games with Ozzie. He looked solid positionally and quick to me last season.
