Lidstrom expected to miss 3 weeks

That cheating *&&^% won't come near the Norris. Electively sitting out half the year and then strolling in mid-season when he's bored? That would be the end all for hockey for me - noone who pulls that stunt should be elegible for trophies. He wouldn't be able to catch up points wise anyways - just the thought makes me sick though. Another thing that makes me sick is that this was concocted by the Avalanche. Since they can't beat us - why not just take our our best player for awhile? What a bunch of whining *&&^%. They have little shot to make the playoffs and I'm going to be ever so happy to rub it in to their fans out here....

Hasek and Rafalski on IR - Ericsson & Hartigan Called Up

Yeah Rafaski and Hasek were both listed as day-to-day and coming back "soon". I'm not sure how the backdated IR works - someone enlighten us? I think that means they can still come off and play soon - but temporarily call up the back-up Ds. Rafaski is sorely needed back - Cheli can pick up extra minutes - he played great the other night. How about trade for Feds and put him on D??

The Rebirth of the Wings and Avs rivalry ?

Would be nice if we could renew this rivalry - but it's a long way off. Right now the Avs are a very mediocre to bad team. I see no way they make the playoffs, but I'm hoping for the Wings sake they slide into the 8th spot. Even with Sakic and Stasny coming back soon (supposedly - and both after major surgeries) I see no way that markedly improves a team with just too many weaknesses. I had the misfortune of being at both the game vs. Vancouver when they ran Marcus Nasland and last night's game when they ran Nick. And yes they are total hypocrites because not a one of them gives a rat's a$$ when it's the other team's elite players getting hurt (although as much as I dislike Laperriere he did admit he would be really POd if that happened to one of their players). They're still sore (albeit with good reason) about the Moore hit - but they just don't see the other side of the coin. For example, I saw a few guys with Lemieux jerseys at the game last night - one of the dirtiest jerks to ever play the game, but if I walked in with a Bertuzzi jersey I'm sure I'd get some liquids dumped on me....

    2/18 GDT: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 0

Tony Granato is such a sorry excuse for an NHL coach, assistant or not. Just the fact that the Av's organization kept him around - and even gave him a shot as the head coach - speaks to how far they have fallen. What a total idiot - it would have been great if Babs could have socked him one - but he's not going to stoop that low. And Quenneville what a spineless moron having your asst coach do the dirty talking for you. I listened to his (Q's) radio show this morning and really wouldn't say much to defend Granato - but of course defended the dirty hit on Lidstrom. He's just dreaming that he could ever get a player of that caliber on one of his teams. The Avs were horrible last night - they freaking gave up after the first period - totally embarrassing effort on their part - but a pleasure for me to witness in person!

    Lidstrom injured: "Not too serious"

Good question - I didn't bring a radio to the game, just listened to the Colorado post game show on my drive home and they replayed the hit as announced on Avs radio several times. It would make people sick in here to hear that loser bubbling over with joy that one of his goons injured someone. Seen as how they can't buy a SOG that's probably the most he ever gets to get excited about. They of course never replayed the fight - but if I guessed it would something like "There goes Lappy and he really kicked the Red Wings' Downy's a$$" pretending the reverse didn't happen. Seriously they have some of the worst homer announcers ever...

    2/18 GDT: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 0

Nice win - the right team at the right time to end the slump. Dirty hit on our captain aside, enjoyed the game thoroughly in person. Sea of Winged Wheels again of course. I especially enjoy the "Red Wings suck" chant when we are beating them in their own building 4-0. I thought our offense was slacking the past few games - they couldn't take a shot on goal if the existence of the human race depended on it! Get well Nick - if I see "Lappy" a$$ around town, I'll be sure to punch him in the face for you!

    Lidstrom injured: "Not too serious"

That definitely sucked. I was in the upper deck right above where he got hit so I got a pretty good look. Really killed me to see Nick groggy and needing help off the ice. I've never liked that thug LaPerriere - now I really hate him. Plus the Avs radio announcer - dickhead that he is - was actually giddy with joy over the hit - sickening. What a loser to get excited over an elite player getting hurt - very classless announcers. "Lappy" of course said he did nothing wrong in his postgame. I truly hope he isn't hurt too bad - the only good thing was that we kicked their ass after that - way to go Wings. The Avs fans were totally demoralized - most of them left during the third period. We need to play 8 games against this team - maybe they can move to our division! Feel better Nick - you are a warrior! Hey AK.

Dam* - I was hoping to see Howard in net. Why not play him again? He was solid vs. the Stars and the Avs are a worse team. IMO he gives the wings the best chance to win. I'm going to the game and I have to admit I'm a bit nervous - not necessarily about losing - but the idiot Avs fans will act like they won the Cup. It's not sold out and should be heavily Wings fans. Go Wings - end the slide vs. Avs - go for the season sweep! Wish me luck, later....

Chris Osgood to start Friday vs. Columbus

Dom gets the benefit because of his cupboard full of Vezina and Hart trophies that Ozzie doesn't have. I'm not saying that's fair, he should also receive his share of criticism for bad games. Plus, you always have to worry about his age & health now. Fact is the Wings have the best chance to win in the playoffs with Dom. Ozzie is fine as a heavily played back-up. Heck I love the guy - but I sure would be worried if we had to pin all of our hopes on him in the playoffs.

    Brady Vs Manning

Eli was better in one game, but there's no comparison who has the better career TODAY. Eli has potential now - he's young and maybe he can set some records himself. Brady did what Eli pulled Sunday three times before. Therefore as it stands now: Peyton has one ring, Eli has one ring, and Brady has 3 rings. Peyton and Eli each have one superbowl MVP, Brady has two. Brady has the TD record and a league MVP. I think Peyton has a league MVP too. At the very least, these are the three guys you want to be watching for the next several years in the NFL. There are alot of mediocre QBs in the league (ask the Lions about that). I'm enjoying it - it's fun having this rivalry. Peyton vs Eli in the Superbowl would be pretty fun too....

    Greatest Sports Upsets Ever

I consider the Miracle on Ice to be the equivalent of a high school club beating the NHL Stanley Cup champions. The Russian team were pretty much professionals. Another analogy would be Appy State beating the Patriots. Appy St beating Michigan is surely at the top of college upsets, but I have a hard time putting it on top of all time sports upsets. It's fresh in everyone's minds right now, but wait 5 years and then see how it ranks. I have a hard time putting any college basketball game on there either - pretty much any collegiate baskeball club can beat another on any given day - look at the NCAA tourny each year.

    1st Round Playoff Opponent

I disagree. Since I live in Denver I see alot of the Avs and I really don't see how they could win a 7 game series vs the Wings. Sure I know anything can happen, but neither one of their goaltenders is very scary, they have alot of young, inexperienced players, and their better players and superstars are so banged up, I'm not sure they can be a factor when they return. Not to mention I think Quennville is pretty average as a coach. Other than Colorado, I'd take Minnesota, Nashville, Columbus. Pretty much anyone not in the Western time zone. Teams I don't want in the first are obviously the Ducks, and probably SJ just for the travel. I'm not sure whether to root for the Ducks or not - I would rather see them win their division and meet them in the WCF if at all. If I root against them, it's possible (though unlikely) they would fall to 8th and we would have to play them first. Oddly enough I find I want them to win enough of their games to stay out of the 6-7-8 spots.

    2007-2008 NFL Playoff Thread

Perhaps - but in today's business world you would have to patent something before it actually occurs. Any team would have done this - like say the Lions (lol) - OK that's not funny! I wonder if the 3 people that voted for the Giants winning did so BEFORE the playoffs began, or last night around 9pm EST?? Anyhow congrats to them - I was kind of hoping to see perfection happen - but the team that played better won. I'm not sure that someone not named Manning or Brady will win a Superbowl for awhile....

    Greatest Sports Upsets Ever

Ditto. The salary cap and free agency mean very little separation between teams in the current NFL. I think the quote "any given Sunday" says it all. The Giants may have been point underdogs - but it's not all that surprising that they won. Miracle on Ice #1 of course. #2 Superbowl III - Jets over Colts: two different Leagues of talent I don't consider college upsets amongst the greatest "sports" upsets of all time - merely because they are not paid professional athletes (well for the most part). You can put the Mich-Appy St in with 'best college upsets", but in general of all time i would say no.

    2007-2008 NFL Playoff Thread

I think the game will be closer than the spread just because the Giants are playing with house money and have nothing to lose by just going for it. I don't take much from the last game of the season - because both teams had their playoff spots secured - give the Giants credit for playing hard - but I think the Superbowl is different. I'll root for the perfect season for the Pats just because I'd like to see history made. I've been a Brady fan from the beginning. However, I must admit I liked the kid who came out of Michigan, was a 6th round pick, won the superbowl and mvp, and was just a humble everyday guy. The "superstarstom" thing just makes people a little more unreal to the masses of us....The media is just nauseating - I have to read on the sports ticker what TB is doing every hour of his day - unreal! I'll be glad when this is over just for the odds that a hockey story might actually surface!

    2008 Australian Open

Crap - I've been waiting several years to watch a match Federer loses (ignore the French) but I elected to go skiing all day and missed it! Hopefully it will be on replay on the tennis channel. Good tourny so far - I'll be watching the women's final here in a few hours - my bet is Sharapova wins vs Ivanovic - here first final I think - she will be nervous - very fun player to watch though...

    Selanne leaning towards return

I really think the NHL needs some kind of rule about jumping onto a team mid-season - or just in time for the playoffs (ie Forsberg). I know there is probably no way to do it because guys like say Joseph, who are looking for teams have to wait until mid-season when someone is desperate to get signed, are doing it legitimately. But I have a problem with guys taking non-injury time off because "they are tired after a long cup run" to then just rejoin the league mid-season or later. Sure it's great for the Ducks but this kind of behavior seems to me to be unfair to the rest of the league. And this goes for all teams - I wouldn't want someone on the Wings doing this either...

    Shanahan

I doubt there's a Wings fan that genuinely dislikes Shanny - he is of course an honorary Red Wing for life. He'll retire with the Rangers. I would actually be sad if he came back - his days with the Wings are done and he doesn't really fit in with the team anymore (imo). He did the right thing by moving on when Yzerman retired....

The Official: 2007 Detroit Lions Season Thread

I usually avoid all things Lions - but I was curious to see what kind of folks could brave being Lions fans.... This is one organization that doesn't deserve fans - I'm all for sticking with your team through tough times - but that is just an understatement in this case. Totally lame move by the Lions - fire Martz and everything will be OK - rotflmao - I truly feel sorry for the people I know that cling to hope - I'll be happy for them if by some miracle before they die - the Lions actually are even a *good* team. It just boggles my mind how such a great sports town can have 3 great professional sports franchises - and one that vies for the worst in the sports world. It boggles my mind even more that the radio spends time talking about them - they're not worth the CO2 that is spent during the conversation. Sorry to be so negative to you die-hards, but you'd be better off just getting rid of the Lions and starting a new NFL franchise from scratch.....

    The Official Bowl Discussion Thread

Great win yesterday for the Maize and Blue! So proud they sent out Carr with a W. OK I have to confess I was thinking "Texas game all over again" there in the 4th quarter for awhile - but got to hand it to them for keeping the pedal to the medal - so sick of hearing about poster boy Tebow - barf! Beating Urban Meyer - priceless! Can we keep Bowl games in Florida? We're cursed in SoCal, so glad we didn't get the Illinois draw - who by the way are just not at Rose Bowl level yet obviously. An unlike our Spartan brethren (whom I rooted for the other day) I will be pulling for the Big Ten the whole way - hoping the Buckeyes hand it to LSU next week...

Another reason for poor Wings attendance?

Schedule, schedule, schedule! Avs were packed for Penguins, Flyers, Wings. Go back to all teams playing each other at least once a year - the regional BS does nothing for attendance. Want to showcase your young stars like every other league? Have them play in all the buildings/markets. Who wants to see the Wild four time a year in your building, or the Jackets in the case of the Wings? Scratch two of those games and bring in some other teams....doesn't take a genious - earth to Bettman!

Another reason for poor Wings attendance?

Attendance alot of places has been down. I've been to several Avs games this year and nearly a third of the seats are empty. Packed tonight because of displaced Wings' fans. 30,500 is really not that much for Metro Detroit - especially considering the hard economic times. You ought to laugh at people that say Wings' fans don't have a following - we make a solid showing at every arena the team plays at - in fact I would argue best in the league. Hockey ticket prices are a bit overprice in general imo. I would much rather go to a hockey game - but it makes not sense to me that I can pay less to see a MLB or NBA game - at least here in Denver. Don't take it so personally - the Wings have great fans and attendance will sort itself out eventually....

    Who got tickets?

Bought 4 tickets to tonight's game vs the Avs and took my hubby and another Red Wings fan couple as a gift - and we kicked their ass - so it was a rockin' gift!

Post-game thoughts, having seen the game in person

Nice post. I was one of the "Sea of Red" tonight too! Nice showing by Red Wings fans! I've been to several Avs games this year. From my perspective: Avs games have been pretty lame this year - that was a totally rocking crowd - mostly by folks wearing Red - good job! I thought the Avs played about as well as could be expected. Alot of mistakes, missed opportunities on their part. Says alot that the Wings can pretty much kick their ass missing Zetts & Homer and on back to back nights! Loved sticking it to the stupid Pepsi center fans: Red Wings Suck? not tonight you losers.... See you'all there in February!!
