My votes: first pitch=Ernie Harwell (if he can throw!) National Anthem=Kid Rock (not gonna happen though). I'd be OK with Stevie Wonder or Bob Segar. Aretha did the Superbowl anthem - that's the only reason I didn't pick her - like to see someone else. I dunno, the old man is in pretty good shape - he might surprise us, like he has so far. I wouldn't mind seeing it.

If there's one team I cannot stand.....

Here's a story to add to the fodder. Do any of you remember the Miami-Penn State national championship game at the Fiesta Bowl in 1987? (awhile ago I know) Anyhow, my folks lived in Arizona at the time, so I was visiting during winter break, and remember seeing all of this on the news. Here's an old newspaper excerpt: "And on that night, the Miami team that took the field was a classically Orwellian team. That bunch of Hurricanesâ€â€coached by Jimmy Johnson, quarterbacked by Vinny Testaverde, epitomized by Michael Irvin, and swayed by egoâ€â€was a team Mr. Orwell easily could have written about. You see, when the Hurricanes got off their plane on Dec. 26, 1986, entering The Valley of the Sun for their big game, the supposed student-athletes from Coral Gables wore combat fatigues. You couldn’t have put such a sight in a Hollywood football movie if you tried. It was beyond Burt Reynolds’ wildest dreams, beyond Adam Sandler’s imagination. It was a classic case of war meaning peaceâ€â€that’s how that 1986 Miami team looked at football and all of life. This outlook and personality only became reaffirmed and entrenched in the public mind when, at a Fiesta Bowl luncheon later on in the week, the Hurricanes brought the army outfits again and conducted a high-voltage food fight before the stunned and mild-mannered Penn State boys. If Miami couldn’t create a war, the team from South Florida would not be at peace. George Orwell would have loved the ’86 Canes." I remember the Miami team walked out on the Penn State guys during their statement/speech at the dinner too. Thankfully, Joe Pa and Penn State went on to beat these hoodlums to claim the title. This is why I have never liked the 'Canes. I never cared for Testaverde either. Also thankfully, he never won anything big in the NFL. -
Does anyone know if the NLCS rain delay will affect the WS schedule?? I would think they still want game 1 showcased on Saturday no matter what. This would be good, because it will mean no days off for the opponent.....
-
If this unlikely scenario should pass, there would be a good case for co-national champions - each with one loss to one another - OSU and UM. That would be hilarious.... :rotflmao:

Nice win by Michigan last night - even if it wasn't the most exciting game I've seen. For the Wolverines, the polls don't really matter since we get a shot at OSU. Agreed totally on USC being overrated - I really do think they will get an L before the season is over (cough cough go Irish). Although I don't like the Trojans at all, and the PAC ten has been a weak conference for several years, I still have to hand it to Pete Carroll for compiling the record he has. Here's WVU's schedule so far: Marshall, E Wash, Maryland, E Carolina, Miss St, Syracuse. I mean even John L Smith would be undefeated after those opponents....

For someone whose been watching Detroit sports for along time: this is HUGE!!!! Probably the biggest sports moment in Detroit history with some company from the 1997 Red Wings imo. Sure we've had other championship teams, but the Tigers going to the World Series is unbelievable! (pinches oneself) I've been wearing my 1984 Playoff button every day since the postseason started and I'm not going to take it off until this thing is finished! Superstitions- lol! I'm also going to be in Michigan for the UM game the 2nd weekend of the Series (if nec). Holy crap I hope I'm there for a championship moment downtown Detroit - that would be awesome!!!!!!! p.s what the he$$ am I going to do all this week?
-
lol I snuck out early myself. Kenny looks great. Tigs are hitting well enough. This is fun - something I never thought I would say about the Tigers again...........
-
I'm in the same boat sans an hour. Sucks for A's fans too. You should have a local ESPN radio affiliate that will air the game for free - I brought a radio walkman to work!
-
TIme change for game 3. The NLCS game gets rained out, and The ALCS has to change its time. Saturday afternoon would be better than Friday. This means 2:30pm for me - a tad early to be sneaking out of work. Plus the internet feeds are blocked out - I can only get the very fuzzy local ESPN if I sit by a window. Oh well, I did it for game 2 last series, and that one worked out........ p.s. GO ROGERS! [attachmentid=267]

Great win last night! FYI, Mlive has a tigers playoff live chat going - pretty fun. I'll need play-by-play tonight calling tonight since I'm in a blacked out area for the game.
-
I'm very excited about this series. If the Tigers can keep any of the momentum they had from the last series, and play even close to as well, they'll be in good shape. Will be tough series though imo, A's will not roll over like the 200+ million dollar yankees......
-
This really sucks - Manningham is a big part of UM's offense. And the worst part is, we could have easily beaten MSU w/o him anyways. Michigan is more talented than either PSU or Iowa, so hopefully if they play mistake free, they can find a way to win both games. GO DEFENSE!
-
Well I'm a little worried about Penn State. But rankings won't matter if it comes down to playing OSU. If both teams remain undefeated, whoever wins will go the the National Champ bowl. And let me just say this before the fact, if OSU wins out and beats Michigan (which I hope they don't) I will go on the record and say I will pull for them in the big bowl game............

Since this isn't first and foremost a baseball site (or football), I go to live chat for Tigers/UM football etc. Rockin' today let me tell you! I like to come in here after the game to post comments though. Who would have thought the Tigers would have won this series last Tuesday after that dismal game 1 loss? I love how all 17 sports righters picked the Yanks - as per Detroit sports radio. Good for Leyland after blowing the division title - who cares about that now huh? I'm very happy for the Tigers- at this point, they've outdone the Red Wings, and equalled the Pistons (ALCS) as far as playoff success. In the words of Forrest Gump: life is like a bunch of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.................
-
Well they won by 18 so the odds makers were right on - you could call it an 18 pt blowout- Lloyd never runs the score up. No real pleasure in beating a disheveled Spartan team, except if Stanton made those dumb remarks, he then deserves this. Personally, the Tigers were more exciting today - kicking the Yankees' ass is more fun than kicking the downtrodden Spartans' ass imo.
-
That rocked tonight! Tigs should give the Pistons and Wings some playoff advice! Hey even if they don't win the series - this is fun. Kenny Rogers - who would have thought - awesome! Good luck tomorrow!
-
<------ Wearing my 1984 Dominos Go Tigers button. Haven't watched much baseball in years - esp living in Colorado. Going to bandwagon for however short or long it lasts. Lookin' good here Friday night in Detroit - keep it up!
-
Well this can only be a good thing for Michigan.

Detroit Tigers should have been AL Central Champs!
RockyMountainWingGal replied to Steve Z's topic in Other Sports
The only thing disappointing was losing the division title in extra inninngs of the last game of the season. In general, we should be thrilled with a spot in the playoffs - only 4 AL teams - I just HATE playing the Yankees - and they're kicking the Tiger's ass right now. -
I used to watch the Tigers alot when I was a kid (and went to alot of games). I was considering "bandwagoning" with the Tigers, but I'm not sure I can take another Detroit team collapsing in the playoffs. Game 1 vs the Yankees is almost all but done (5-0 Yanks). I only casually know the players on the Tigers, but this pitcher stinks. Plus, like everyone, I hate the Yankees - so this might be just too ugly for me to watch. Hope not - other underdog teams have beat them in recent years, but it's looking bad right now.
-
Well that was totally depressing to watch - even from someone who is first and foremost a UM fan - I though the Spartans were going to roar back in OT. I'm glad my dad is in Italy this weekend - he's a big Spartan fan and thought they'd rebound fine this week. Plus on top of that he's a Lions fan too - yikes! I take back what I said about Stanton lat week (that he wasn't that bad vs ND) - he was dismal this week. I'd consider playing the #2 guy if I were coaching MSU - can't be any worse. Congrats to Michigan - a little lax there at the end of the game, but they took care of business enough in the first half that it didn't matter. p.s. Rivas better not miss those chip shots in a close game
-
I heard of similar version of this before he was hired as the Lion's head coach. Now I have a tainted view of him. However, the Spartans will never be as dismal as the Lions - if the curse of the Lions can be reversed off Mariucci, I think he would be a great fit for State.
-
State fans? They seem to kind of disappear after a big loss, except for Timothy1997, or in the event they manage to beat Michigan. I don't think Stanton is that bad - the whole team tends to choke sometimes. The interception at the end off of a State guy's back was something only the Irish could concoct. It's only one loss - heck us UM fans have to live with an early loss to the Irish half the time - not the end of the season. Smith just ain't the guy. Sabin might have been, but he was turd for leaving. Guy in between (?forgot name) was a disaster - so much so the Lions wanted him. Mariucci would be interesting, although after his botch job with the Lions, I wouldn't bet the house on it. They need a young energetic coach, someone who wants to make a name for himself and will be grateful for the shot at it.
-
The Spartans kind of saved the season for them there, huh? Too bad, they have a relatively easy schedule now until USC.
-
What moron made the Big Ten schedule - how could they not get Michigan OR OSU for two straight years? I agree they will choke - that would be a travesty if they won w/o playing the best teams in the conference.
