Based on how the market and re-signings have played out, IMO theres going to be a huge bidding war for guys like Ehlers. Id rather just avoid signing another probable overpay like that. Was having a convo with a friend about how well Nightingale has turned around the Michigan State hockey program, and I guess this didnt register with me until my buddy mentioned it... Nightingale isnt some genius college hockey coach, he was in the right place at the right time... the rule changes to the NCAA now allow players to get paid, and Nightingale suddenly has MSU football money behind him. Because of this rule change we are witnessing a huge shift in the prospect landscape. Players are choosing college over the OHL more often now. For example Gavin McKenna, next years #1, is down to MSU or Penn State as his destination. This shift is also a dream scenario for the Red Wings. Because the only teams with serious hockey programs and serious athletics money generated from football/basketball are Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State. So we have 2/3 of the future powerhouse colleges in our backyard. The ivy leagues and teams like Quinnipiac are doomed. And even programs like Minnesota and Boston will struggle to compete. Michigan the state is geared for total hockey dominance.
