Then why did 3 teams pass on him?
-
Yup, I read your post. If you would care to read mine, he was ranked higher than 9 as well. So you're incorrect about Danielson being a reach at 9. See below X4 Euros went ahead of him. Selection bias. Try reading more than 2-3 draft opinions. Pronman is a pretty huge voice in the draft community that you conviently ignored. He had Danny as top 5. If its pick #9, but your next draft target isn't projected to go to till the 2nd round, it makes sense to trade down. If it's pick #9, and your next draft target is ranked 5-16, you take your guy. Make sense?

Meh, I get why he did it. Control/power move to ask for someones personal property and look through it. And it sends the message that Babs is monitoring what the player does in their personal life, and that Babs will find your dirty laundry one way or another (so straighten up). Is it a totally weird thing to do for most people? Absolutely. But that's the other angle to it, besides the message it sends... strange and intusive requests/questions are often employed to size people up. Are you a weak-willed person who is going to immediately submit to something you know crosses the line? Are you someone with strong character who is going to recognize whats happening is unfair and become offended and refuse? Or do you become nervous and meekly refuse, showing you have something to hide? It's the same reason Yzerman was asking draft eligible players weird questions about weed and stuff. Babs/Yzerman don't actually care (unless your dumb enough to reveal something damning) they want to see how you react, to figure out what kind of person/player you are. Babs was mutually terminated for abusing his power to invade a players privacy. But what's lost on many, is that it was meant to test the player, and/or demonstrate his own power, not to see his actual photos.

I also didnt hate zadina if i recall

Agreed. And the hockey community is very tight knit. They all talk to each other, and their evaluations probably dont vary as wildly as some would expect. Seider being a shocker at #6 was a failure by the media community. He was rocketing up team rankings that spring by the sounds of things, because he was recognized late as a German in the DEL, a league that isnt scouted as heavily. Hakan Andersson has said he normally doesnt even leave Sweden till the 2nd half of the season to scout the rest of Europe. IMO It would be beyond foolish to say Yzerman was a genius for selecting Seider at 6. Smart, yes, but genius no. Plenty of other teams with just as capable scouts had witnessed him. And if my dumbazz was able to see a stud in the making, they were able to too. Seider woulda been off the board in the top 10 whether we selected him or not. Media pundits are a great way to get an idea of who to watch, but after that theyre amateurs same as you or I. And frankly, most scouts get it wrong too, so investing anything beyond a fleeting interest in public ranking is clearly regarded.

If had pasted as plain text you would have been none the wiser I had my benis surgically removed years ago for this exact reason. And to kill my sex drive so I could focus on posting. -
I had Seider as the best Dman in the 2019 draft, but did not expect him to go to us at 6. McKenzie had him behind Byram, Broberg, and Soderstrom. Pronman had him behind all those guys plus York and Harley. And the bad rankings go on like that... Imagine if SY actually bought into amatuer media hype like Holland did with Zadina... I wanted Simashev last year. He went higher than Danielson but hes been pretty meh in the KHL since. The draft itself is the gamble.
-
You thought he went early at 9 because you saw him ranked 10-16??? BTW Pronman ranked him as top5 at #5. Recruit scouting at 7. ESPN at 7. Central scouting at 7 (more like 11). Dobber at 12. No one was shocked to see him go at 9. ASP was also ranked very high by some, sometimes in the top 5, but we got him at 17. Make your own list, and take your guy when hes available. Teams dont care what newsbros think. Only time trading down makes sense is if you have a Datsyuk type situation where you know nobody else has ever scouted him. Yzerman already said hes on the roster next season

My bad, the way Kuflan wrote the article I was reading made it sound like this years WJC, but he was talking about the 2021 WJC and this years EHT tournament, which he just called "international", so I assumed he meant worlds. Not even sure what EHT is. Doubtful he ever plays for detroit. I'm just saying stats suggest hes a goal scorer, and he's often described as fast. Hence "AA type"
-
With former wings coaches at UofM and MSU and WMU, we should have the inside track on every college player in Michigan
-
I meant WJC He also led the czech league in goals scored last year, and was 2nd in the league in points. And continued with 5 goals and 7 pts in 9 playoff games. Seems to be a goal scorer with fast legs. Maybe an AA type?

What is it they say? If you want to see someones true character, watch how they treat those that cant help them? Something like that. I'm fine with coaches using mind games, intimdation, gaslighting, whatever, on players, so long as nothing illegal happens. That's their job. Get the most out of their players. Whether thats by good cop or bad cop, i dont care. Just do whats effective. But when you read the article and it talks about him doing the same stuff to staff... that's where he starts to decend into bad guy territory for me. Its not his job to "coach" the staff. He's probably a perfectionist and cant help himself. Probably "coached" his family too. Every coach is going to have players that think hes a dick, i dont put too much stock into that. Comes with the territory. But it does seem that Babs greatly prefered fear tactics over hugs n kisses. Maybe more so than most coaches.

Played really well at worlds this year. Still a long shot prospect, but a good pickup for GR for now, so long as hes not a hooker n blow czech like Huds and Vrana

McGODvid this, McJesus that What about Bouchard? That kid has 27 pts in 18 playoff games. He makes Cale Makar look like Bob Rouse out there. The kittens have no idea the level of firepower thats about rain on them -
Look at Kadri. Dogged on by Babs, but adapted, grew, evolved into a much a better hockey player, and ended up becoming arguably Babs favorite center to deploy in Toronto. He holds no ill will towards Babs and credits him for helping him become the better player he is today. That's a man. That's a pro. Marner is a child that still lets his daddy run his fiances, and cries and tattles at the first sign of adversity. And look what good its done him... probably getting traded this offseason #packyours*** Franzen had too many concussions, and already had, or developed mental health issues. Babs apologized after the fact. And I would argue the mind games worked on Commodore. He became INSANELY motivated and energized by his hatred for Babs.
-
Inb4 Mo Seider Heavily suspected Holland wanted to take Seider at #8
-
All fringe players except Marner. But Marners reaction to the whole work ethic thing was to literally cry... making me kind of understand why Babs was picking on him. Babs wanted Marner to grow some balls and refuse to make the list, or at least get angry when Babs embarrassed him with it. But Marner reacted by tearing up like a child. No wonder Babs didnt like him... Furthermore, Babs was a big proponent of the "We dont draft boys, we draft men" schtick in Toronto. So its no wonder he wasnt happy about drafting Marner, who proved to be exactly the crybaby that Babs foresaw. At the end of the day, Babs is a well seasoned coach, and has a degree in sports psychology. He doesnt do these things for no reason, or just to be mean. Fear may not be nice, but it is a motivator.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5530122/2024/05/31/no-one-is-spared-tracing-mike-babcocks-imperious-nhl-coaching-career/ Pretty good read on Babs antics Nothing new that you wouldn't expect... Telling guys to not travel with the team bc they are working on trading them, then telling the media that the player personally chose not to travel. Telling 4th liners to cut superstars in drills to get everyone mad at each other. Telling guys to show up to his office, then refusing them. Calling Franzen a fat pig (lol). Etc etc. All the usual power/manipulation stuff. The part I found interesting is that hes apparently still so well connected and respected by the upper echelons of the hockey world, that players EVEN NOW wont go on record about him, for fear of backlash from the powers that be. And Babcock refused to comment on if hes been approached about jobs... Is Babs the evil puppeter of hockey? The Jeffrey Epstein of the NHL?
-
Which way did he trade his additional first?
-
If I recall correctly he traded up in the 1st in previous drafts. The opposite of down.

I saw Matt Tkachuk at a grocery store in Calgary one time. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a ****** and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly. Guy is a total doosh. Go McOil. -
