Based on how the market and re-signings have played out, IMO theres going to be a huge bidding war for guys like Ehlers. Id rather just avoid signing another probable overpay like that. EK would be welcome - but my guess is Pens will be asking for more than we want to give up. Im thinking more about 3 years from now than I am focused on winning this season. No matter what we do we wont be winning a cup in this division next year.

He would be a good pick up for the 2nd pairing. 2 or 3 years keeps him long enough until ASP is ready. Gavrikov adds competition for Chiarot. May the best man win. SY wanted JVR in the past. He's still a big expierenced powerforward vet that we can have for cheap. Was having a convo with a friend about how well Nightingale has turned around the Michigan State hockey program, and I guess this didnt register with me until my buddy mentioned it... Nightingale isnt some genius college hockey coach, he was in the right place at the right time... the rule changes to the NCAA now allow players to get paid, and Nightingale suddenly has MSU football money behind him. Because of this rule change we are witnessing a huge shift in the prospect landscape. Players are choosing college over the OHL more often now. For example Gavin McKenna, next years #1, is down to MSU or Penn State as his destination. This shift is also a dream scenario for the Red Wings. Because the only teams with serious hockey programs and serious athletics money generated from football/basketball are Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State. So we have 2/3 of the future powerhouse colleges in our backyard. The ivy leagues and teams like Quinnipiac are doomed. And even programs like Minnesota and Boston will struggle to compete. Michigan the state is geared for total hockey dominance.

Per Bultman, Phil Osaer - Head of goalie scouting and development is leaving the team. We also still need a new goalie coach. By my count, 14 different goalies have suited up for the Red Wings in the 6 years since Yzerman took over. So averaging 2.33 new goalies per year. Those numbers are WILD when you consider that Holland only suited up 18 different goalies in his entire 21 year tenure as Wings GM. Averaging less than 1 goalie a year at 0.85. Whomever we hire for goalie coach this summer will be Yzerman's 3rd GC in 7 years. Again, WILD, as Holland only had 2 GCs in his 21 year wings tenure. Stevie watching his goalie carousel like:

Yeah, and honestly the length of this rebuild - SY going slow and steady - is fine with me. Might not be exactly what I'd do in this particular moment, but I can understand the approach and why. The only thing that actually pisses me off about this rebuild is SY's inaction at TDL's. I won't get into all that again in this thread, but for 2 years now I haven't been able to find anyone around the boards who can come up with a reasonable excuse for it, and most won't even try to defend it. It's bad. It's wrong. And I could abide this rebuild for much longer if he'd least stop doing that (by doing somdthing). *Mandatory comment about Detroit being a city in Minnesota*

Also, the reason I posted the above in this thread is because the HF poster in question claimed there is about a 50/50 chance Yzerman moves to Devellano's position and appoints Draper as GM after the draft this offseason. I probably shouldve mentioned that... Reason being, it would buy the team good will from fans so that Yzerguy and Drapes can finish out "the plan" over the next two years without so much heat. I think the Gibson trade adds a lil bit of fuel to that fire. As Gibson's contract again coincides with this timeline. Now that the draft is over it will be interesting to see the term that Yzerman hands out on July 1. If this truly is the final leg of "the plan" I expect to see more 1-2 year deals like Gustafsson and Tarasenko (but hopefully more impactful than them).

The Italian stallion is done in the NHL isnt he? He's just never provided... anything. No identity as a player. He's akin to Joakim Andersson or Cory Emmerton. Just completely replaceable. That 2018 draft is nightmare fuel. Holland really cooked us. We had the 6th, the 30, the 33, and the 36th. Zadina is in Europe. Probably Joe now too. Berggren is a weak perimeter forward that probably doesnt survive the next 2 years on this team. And McIsaac is barely surviving in the Czech league. Wild.
