my wife is from smithfield, north carolina (i'm from jackson, mi., and moved down here for a teaching job) and knows very, very little about hockey. she's very cute about it. she once asked if Mick Libstrom was having a good season. Her mother thinks hockey is played outdoors with a ball.

that happened a few times last year, didn't it? boy it seemed like it did.

i would love to have a guy that just destroys people in front of the net if they so much as look at the goalie wrong, but whenever we play against a team that has that type of player and they get a roughing penalty on holmstrom i just laugh and laugh. i really think the wings are the smartest team in the league, and having some goon back their taking penalties just to keep players "honest" after whistles would be a step in the wrong direction IMO. plus, it doesn't matter whose on the ice, anybody that runs howard or takes liberties on him is going to get some attention. salei is a big boy and plays mean, and babcock has respect for him which means he's got some smarts. if he stays healthy, i think salei will have a ton of fans in detroit before long.

we do have a young belarusian defesemen in the system who could most likely be a cheap 3rd pairing and could develop a mean streak if he had inspiration. this signing makes a lot of sense to me.

years ago people here were dying to have this guy with the wings. i guess because now he's 36 instead of 33 that has changed some opinions. he plays with an edge and can put up some points. i think that's what most people want. but those extra few years will bring on some doubters.
