Burnside: Empty Seats at Joe Not Troublesome

The prices are a bit out of hand... the optimum price model is typically max price per seat while still selling out the place. Looks like they're priced a tad high. Although, I hope to grab a round 3 seat (knock on wood) regardless of the price. On another note... does anyone find anything odd about his opening sentence? Did Buffalo secede from the union? Maybe they're leaving New York to join Quebec in a new independent socialist nation?

    Off season....

Since when is going from Hasek to Belfour considered a 'lateral' move? Hasek >>>> Belfour. And I'd take unproven Howard in net before I hire the Broke Back Eagle.

    Schneider: OUT with Broken Wrist

Personally, I'd rather see 6'5" Ericsson out there than a 5'11" Meech. Also, I'd expect Lebda to get more practice time before he comes back. Schneids is a big loss... but more of an offensive loss than a defensive one. At least Quincey has stepped up as a solid #6, and Lils has really stepped up to be a freaking physical powerhouse. Ok, maybe that's an exageration, but he has impressed the hell out of me with his physical play. Bottom line: Lids, Marky Mark, Chelli & Lils will pick up the slack & a few extra shifts. [edit] Another prospect site I read a lot has this to say about Ericsson... www.redwingscentral.com

    So, 6 or 7 games?

I used to think this would be a 7 gamer... But, I think the Sharks may have lost the mental edge they need after the game 4 disappointment & game 5 embarassment. So, I think 6 is possible. Although, with Schneids out, our boys all need to step it up yet another gear.

    Lidstrom?

Do we have people suffering from injuries? Sure... Zetts, Bert, Homer for example. San Jose likely has people hurting as well. But don't forget. We ARE the underdogs here. San Jose is the ONLY team in the west I think is better than us... bigger, stronger, younger, faster. Our only advantage... experience & maturity. If the boys can keep playing with passion, we can pull this off in 7. But little lapses in judgement, bad plays, etc, can sink us. One way or another, I believe whoever wins this series is going to win the west as well. And, if we do lose this series, the reason why is obvious. Not because a goalie let in soft goals. Not because of bad coaching. Not because our forwards didn't perform. The answer is simple... if San Jose wins, it's because they are the better team.

    A Little Help?

I've been there... was in Norway through the first 2 rounds of the 2002 playoffs. Had to listen to radio simulcast of the first two series of games over a 28.8 baud dial-up modem. Add 6 hours of time difference from EST & I was listening to games at 3-6 AM. But it was worth it.

    Hullies Octo-Knowledge

Great line after a great game... Barry/Bret/Ray talking about how the Octo's get in, saying they'd hate to have one of those hidden on them for the whole game waiting for the Wings to tie up that game. Hullie says: I don't even know where they get them (octo's), from the detroit river you think? Barry says (while looking at Hull like he's an idiot): No, uh, they don't live there. You'd think having played in detroit, he'd know a bit more about it.

Can we get a W in the tank?

2 games, each with 50 minutes of incredible play by the Red Wings. If we can show up for all 60 minutes, we'll take at least one game. Actually, this was an encouraging game. Particularly the Cleary & Dats goals... Hank's goal had a lot of flukey luck behind it, but the other two should help rebuild that confidence they seemed to lack for the first 10 minutes today. Of the tough teams still in it, I think San Jose is the best suited to take out the Wings. So, if Detroit actually manages to show up at the first drop of the puck, I think we'll do more than just survive this round.

    Hullies Octo-Knowledge

Funny, I just reopened this to read replies & realized I said Barry instead of Bill. Surprised nobody's gone nuts about that faux pas. LGW members must be too happy about the win to nitpick. As for if it was a joke or not, it did not seem like a joke to me... or I wouldn't have laughed so hard. And it was Clements response that made it so freakin funny, and he obviously didn't think it was a joke either. So I'm convinced: Hull is, in fact, an idiot when it comes to marine biology. Given his mad hockey skills, I shall therefore assume he is part genius and part idiot. Thus, Hull is an idiot savant.

    Octopus

Oh yeah, he helped all right. He was awesome in Game 2 when he earned a Gordie Howe Hat-Trick. Watching Bernie the 3-oz Starling beat the crap out of Robyn Regehr was one of the best highlights of the game... and the way Bernie deked Kipper out of his pink-cotton-panties was priceless. Yeah, he sure helped. Yeah. Right.

    Octopus

This bernie stuff is crap. Sure, he was funny in game one... but to say Bernie is part of our rich tradition because he showed up for ONE GAME!? Come on, be serious. The only thing cool about Bernie is that he allowed LGW to get in the news by sending the team some 'Bernie' shirts. But let's face it, Bernie is gone. The JLA folks got rid of him. Nobody's rallying around Bernie other than a few here. If he did come back, he'd probably find himself smashed into the ice by a projectile-Octopus. The Octopus: Awesome tradition since the 50's Yzerman: The best damned Wing to wear the red & white. Bernie? A minor amusement for a few minutes in one game, 2 weeks ago. Tradition my ass.

    Octopus

Don't know how true it is, but the play-by-play folks a couple years ago were talking about the officials charging detroit with a Delay of Game due to fans tossing the invertabrates on the ice. If that is indeed possible, than JLA has to go through the motions of trying to prevent it from happening so it can claim 'the fans did it', and that they are in no way responsible.

    Octopus

I'll money-order you $50 if you smack Big Joe in the head with that octopus. $500 if it sticks to his face like 'Aliens'. How are you planning to get it in? Last game I went to (Detroit @ Columbus, 3rd to last game of the season) they searched me pretty good. Then again, it's columbus & I was in a wings jersey. Undoubtedly they knew I was looking for trouble.

    SHARKS

This is going to be a very tough series. Our trial by flames certainly helped bond the team... but we'll need all of our stars to stand tall and a power play with some actual power... or at least some play. As long as it has SOMETHING. I'm going to say & hope for Wings in 6. But, given the 1-3 record, and the 5-1 & 9-4 losses they handed us... it is not going to be easy. I do believe we are the underdog here, and hope our boys play like it.

Lidstrom the Leader of the Wings

Well, technically I'd give him a C. He hasn't worn the A all season. Nick, like Stevie, is one of those players that I dread to see retire. Not just for how much he means to the wings, but for how much he means to the league.

Lets give credit to players that had a great series

Quincey was called up... And you're right. How could I have forgotten Flip too? I was also happy with Rex's play. He didn't shy away from any contact, despite having some of Calgary's biggest roughing him up. He took a LOT of abuse during game 2 & didn't back down. All of the usual suspects were outstanding as well... Lids, Cheli, Dom, Malts & Drapes. I was glad to see too that Lang is potting in a few points now that he's with Bert.

Lets give credit to players that had a great series

What has me excited is the depth of the team. If the top line is shut down, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines kick in some goals to make up for it. Finally it seems like we're firing on at least 7 of our 8 cylinders. And Hank & Bert aren't even playing at top form yet... so they should be getting better & we'll be at our full horsepower soon. Now, if we can only get Calds & Sammy to take it up 3 notches or so. Another reason I have a positive outlook... team identity. This series, with all of Calgary's aggressive & sometimes out-of-line play, has really bonded the Wings together as a unit. In game 5, a scrum formed around cleary, and this big hulking guy in a wings jersey forces his way in to fight back... who was it? #3. That's right. Lils, sticking up for Cleary. On a team where nobody seemed to stick up for anyone else over the regular season. That's a great sign to me. Also... watching this series I couldn't help but think that Cleary is becoming the new DMac. Hard working, some devastating hits, and still able to toss the biscuit in the cage. Franzen has also been a monster. A true Franzenstein. Our next-gen Homer. If they keep playing with this passion & physical play, get Hank & Bert back to full power, I think we've got a long post season ahead.

    Pre-GAME 6: (4/22) Red Wings @ Flames - 9 PM ET

McLennan should definitely be suspended. But as Franzen said, who cares? He isn't playing anyway. 18 seconds is already 18 more seconds than he was expected to play. Slainkow should get a 1 game suspension for that cheap hit... not to mention horrible acting on a clear dive AFTER he threw the punch. But Iginla? No way. Some frustrated cross-checks & hooks? I've lost all of my respect for the guy. Penalties, sure, but there wasn't anything he did that crossed the line into 'suspension' territory. Let's face it, after 20 years of having pure-class captains, his behavior just seems more abhorent to us wing fans. The real question for me, is what about Calgary's Playfair? That's an oxymoron that eclipses 'Military Intelligence'. It looked to me like he sent in McLennan for the expressed purpose of stirring up trouble. That's a fine & ejection if I remember correctly... it's obvious he wanted the goalie to stand up to our screeners, without sacrificing Kipper. Hell, listen to his (paraphrased) comments AFTER the game: We can debate this forever, good or bad, we just came to play. Sounds like a guy justifying his actions in taking the 'bad' road. The NHL (if they wish to have any credibility) needs to look at McLenan, Langkow, & Playfair. Of those, I suspect only McLennan will get sacrificed, since the NHL knows it won't affect the outcome of the series... i.e. they'll take the ball-less route & point to McLennan & say 'we can't allow this' while letting Langkow/Playfair get away with their contributions...

    Keep Hudler in the lineup

Hudler's outplayed Sammy & Calder both & deserves to stay in. Personally, I think Sammy should sit for game 6... let the 1 game benching fire up calder a bit.

a disturbing stat for the wings since 2002

Let's hear some REAL reasons to be worried. Seems to be a lot of upset people here. So what, it's 2-2. Gee... we are playing the team with THE BEST home record in the league and one of THE WORST road records and they won 2 at home. Guess what, we have the 2nd best home record & a decent away record too. So who cares if it's 2-2... this is a classic case of why it's good to have home-ice advantage. The ONLY way I'll get worried is if Calgary wins tomorrow's game 5. Because, I give us a 5% chance of winning the 2nd half of a back-to-back series in the Saddledome on Sunday. So, we win tomorrow, then this will go to 7... all home-team wins.

    Kara Yario suggests...

Islanders v Devils last week. Went to SO. If Devils won, Toronto would have been the 8th seed. But NYI won, hence they are 8th. Was a great game to watch. Personally, I love the SO. That is, I love the SO in the REGULAR SEASON. You've got to let the boys play it out once the cup is on the line...

    My Concerns for Game 3

Sammy is the ONLY logical choice to sit. The top two scoring lines in game 1 & 2 are the 1st & fourth... Hank/Pavel/Homer and Fil/Franz/Rex. The checking line has also done well helping keep the shot total so low for calgary's top line... The ONLY line that needs a boost is Calder/Lang/Sammy. So... given that. The choice is 100% clear to me. Reunite Calder/Lang/Bert... that line was looking good for the few Reg Season games it had together.

    Detroit Vs Calgary Predictions

Actually I'd call it 4 pts in 3 games... after getting blanked for 5 games while he adjusted after 5 months off & on a new team. I'd call that all good. I still predict a Bert-Iggy fight at some point.
