That's why I said it'd be better to wait till next summer....

You could say that about any player ever. Same with the Lapointe comment that seems to keep popping up. So because it didn't work out with that player we should never take that risk again? Be cautious when throwing out big contracts but you have to take risks every once in a while. Having said that next summer may be the better time to take that risk on a UFA...

Should we trade our 2013 1st round pick?

Ristolainen has quite possibly the hardest shot in the entire draft and is very much a 2-way guy as shown in the last two world juniors. Nurse does project more as a big aggressive defensive shut-down guy who's very mobile as does Zadorov.

I think if anything describes the situation or has a close relation it's this and what Burke talks about... Now obviously this situation had a much different background and was based more on what Ulf did in the past and his gutless reputation but it has many similarities. Not saying this kid is Ulf. That would be beyond stupid. More so just alluding to the belief that a pest "will see his day". Many people condemned Domi for this while many said Ulf "had it coming". Much like most people say the same about Matt Cooke. Be a pest and people will target you. Whether it's right or wrong.

Well they do affect the cap and now it's been officially reported they're being bought out...

No way Bickell hits free agency now. Even before they won the cup he was quoted as saying how much he owes to the Bowmans and Chicago for developing him into the player he is. They will buyout Montador and Olesz as its been widely speculated and will thus have over 7 million to spend on Bickell, a backup goalie and a 5/6th defenceman. Hardly dire straits.

Should we trade our 2013 1st round pick?

I'm not so sure he always had the final say but (to quote the article) "the draft and player development in Grand Rapids were his specialties." His duties are actually to be split between McDonnell and Martin. I also wouldn't expect our drafting strategy to change much either as it states "Nill relied heavily on the low-profile McDonnell, especially in recent years". That's a great sign. Here's the Article

I agree it was completely overboard. Way out of line. There's no condoning how far he took it. However....what exactly did he think was going to happen? The game was already out of hand with previous fights/misconducts and a blowout score. To do what he did to the goalie and not expect some immediate repercussion is pretty naive. All I'm saying is I believe he should take some responsibility for provoking the entire situation in an obviously out-of-hand game. That doesn't mean he deserves what he got or that the other player isn't entirely responsible for his own actions. Just show some acceptance that he knew exactly what he was doing (being classless and baiting the other team) and should have been more than aware that the other team would respond in a violent way. If you're going to be a pest and do stupid things like that be aware of your surrounding and get your damn hands up.

A few additional points: -The score was already a blowout at 7-2 making the snowing that much more of a rub -The refs obviously did a horrendous job controlling the matter. As shown in the video they literally just stand there and watch until it's almost over. -I'd like to state its much more "cowardly" to snow a goalie in a blowout win than to stick up for your goalie in that matter. Overboard? Hell yes but not cowardly.

Should we trade our 2013 1st round pick?

As I stated in the draft thread, I would love to see us trade the 18th pick for San Jose's three 2nd round picks. Would give us three picks in a row in the top 50 at 48,49,50 as well as 58. Throw in whatever on either side to make it work. Would also give San Jose almost back to back picks in the first round at 18 and 20. Keeping in mind its a very deep draft and anyone after the top 15 is a gamble.

Well thanks very much for the compliment. I just love my Red Wings and having thoughtful conversations/debates with passionate people such as yourself. And believe me I hope your right as well.

Now I love me some Helm but it seems everyone is forgetting the struggles he has to have his hands catch up with his feet... If there's one thing Filppula has over Helm is that his hands are far more superior. Helm's skill set is ideal for a 3rd line center. He just doesn't have the finishing nor the playmaking ability to be a 2nd line center.

I've got news for you. That's not our team. You conveniently left off 5 signed roster players and two UFAs very likely to be resigned. If that's what you'd like our team to be that's cool. But don't say "that's our team". And forward depth was one of our greatest strengths this year with the league-leading injuries totals. Don't know what team you were watching.

    Detroit: Circa June 2018...

I may be the only one but I hope we trade down again. This draft is very deep. It's easy to read up on the top 30 player profiles and get excited about those guys. Id like to see something bold. Something along the lines of trading the 18th overall pick for San Jose's' three 2nd round picks. Throw in spare parts on either side to make it work. Would give us 3 picks in a row in the top 50 at 48,49, 50 as well as another at 58. But that's me....

    Howard a top 6-8 goalie?

Elite: Lundqvist, Rinne and possibly now Quick. Then there's everyone else...

I somehow doubt that... Well maybe as a toddler lol

One poster brings up replacing Tootoo and the East and everyone goes off the deep end. No one is talking about reshaping the roster or our style of play. It's just that Tootoo is the most aggressive player we have and losing him would create a hole. It helps to have players like that throughout your roster and especially in the bottom 6 to wear down your opponent. We have little to none. It's not about enforcers, it's about guys that can crash and bang and still play a normal shift without being a liability. It's not about the East, it's about being a difficult team to play against both with and without the puck.

I guess I just have concerns that 6 of our top 9 forwards are going to be under 6' and see Tatar as one of the few roster assets that would we would possibly trade with value. Especially considering Holland's desire to get a little bigger.

I agree with you for the most part. I would hope that additional prospect would be a Ferraro or Athanasiou but that may be wishful thinking. I disagree especially in this offseason. Picks and young talent are at an all-time high with teams struggling to get under the cap and find solid financial footing I just don't see Tatar, Nyquist and Brunner on the roster together. Brunner's a UFA and I'd take Nyquist over Tatar. .

I don't disagree with you as it is expensive to move up in the draft, but I was referring more to adding a roster player.

What exactly do people feel the value of Tatar + 47th overall pick is? What would YOU expect that to get? Because I sure think it would have a ton of value.

I'm kinda hoping we can pull off a deal for Yandle finally. With us switching conferences and Phoenix in dire need of some forward depth I could see a trade being worked out. To Phoenix: Tatar Eaves Colaiacovo 2nd round pick To Detroit: Yandle 6th round pick
