So, after moving to the Dallas area (from another town in Texas), I kind of adopted the Rangers as my favorite team. Now, I already have a true favorite team, but they stink on ice this year, so it's been fun to follow the Rangers throughout their season. I've been to a couple of games this year, and had an incredible stroke of luck tonight. I was at the Rangers/Red Sox game tonight. Got to see the Rangers give up 7 runs in the 4th, to end up trailing 8-2 after the top of the fourth. So I'm thinking "crap, did I pick the wrong game to go to". Never being the fair-weather fan who leaves before the game is over (ESPECIALLY after just the 4th inning), we stuck it out. And damn if we weren't rewarded for it, as the Rangers battled back for an extra innings walk off home run to cap a 10-9 comeback win.. This was easily the most fun non-hockey game I've ever been to. The 1993 Draft has some interesting talent that we missed out on too. With the 22nd pick in the draft, the Red Wings selected D Anders Eriksson. Who was picked 23rd by the New York Islanders? Todd Bertuzzi. Also picked later on in the draft. Miroslav Satan, Tommy Salo, Eric Daze, Janne Niinimaa, Brendan Morrison, Bryan McCabe, Darcy Tucker, Patrick Lalime, Todd Marchant, Andrew Brunette, Pavol Demitra, Kimmo Timonen and Manny Legace.

You had to love the pattern of Cup wins in the late 90's/early 00's between the Devils, Avs, and Wings... 95 - New Jersey 96 - Colorado 97 & 98 - Detroit 00 - New Jersey 01 - Colorado 02 - Detroit It was all so predictable! Too bad we had to go and break it when we lost to Anaheim in the first round of '03...

Exactly. If you look at the 6 numbers that are up there, is there any way that Probert or Chelios can compare? I know one was a fan favorite, and I know that another played with us for 10 years. They had their ups and downs, and are beloved members of the Red Wings alumni, but neither had the kind of exemplary career that would warrant a number retirement. Had Cheli been drafted by the Wings, and played his entire career here, you *might* have an argument for his number, but that isn't the case, so it's a moot point. IMO, the current standard seems to be the best, and that is the standard that Yzerman set. I realize that that might be setting the bar a bit high, but isn't that kind of the point? Number retirement is the highest honor the Red Wings can give to a player. If you give it to #24 (either Probert, or Cheli), doesn't that then seem to cheapen it for the other absolute legends that are already up there? There are more Red Wings players in the Hall of Fame (49) than there are with retired numbers. IMO, that's the way it should be. The only current or former Red Wing right now that I would even consider as being worthy of number retirement is Lidstrom.

It's certainly one of the more exciting offseasons, but I can't quite take the plunge and say it's THE most exciting/best. The offseason of '01 when we picked up Hasek, Hullie, and Luc... That season could not start fast enough. From day one, you just knew that we were going to be wire-to-wire favorites. That whole offseason was felt with nervous excitement, knowing the potential that team had. I will agree though, that this offseason could be Holland's best since the salary cap, though only time will tell with that. Is it October yet?

Updated the thread title, if only to avoid confusion. I approve of this move, especially if by "join front office" they mean "replace Brad McCrimmon". Welcome back, Cheli!

Consider that this is the same franchise that thought the "Snot Horse" was a good idea, and I think you'll find your answer...

Any time I think of Homer having to speak, I'm always reminded of the fake quote from him to Zetterberg in '08-09 (KuklasKorner, if I'm not mistaken). Homer - “You signing renewing and using ink for a name with paper?" Z - "Jesus, Homer!" Imagine the hilarity of that kind of banter from Homer to a Ref.

First off, like Heaten mentioned, Rafalski has a No Movement Clause. So that's pretty much the end of the discussion there. That being said, Pronger's contract is arguably WORSE than Rafalski's. Since Pronger's newest contract went into effect after he turned 35, then Philly (or whoever he could get traded to) would be on the hook for his cap hit if he retires before the contract is up. Not to mention Raf's cap hit is lower than Prongers (6m as opposed to 6.25m), and would not count against the cap should he retire. Oh, and never EVER mention that Pronger "adds everything that this team needs". Douchiness is sorely NOT needed on this team.

In some pre-season scrimmages/exhibitions, maybe. Once the season starts, I highly doubt it. We're already rotating the "A" between Z, Dats, and Draper. We'd either have to add Mike to that rotation (not likely) or remove one of the other three from the rotation (also not likely) in order to do so. Now, if (God forbid) two or more of our current Alternates go down with injury, then there's a chance that you'd see the "A" on Mo's sweater, but you could also make the case that half of the roster could also wear the "A" too. I could just as easily see Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall and possibly even Franzen with the "A".

Holland would never go for that... ...they serve Miller and Molson at the Joe.
