Sending anyone down to GR would mean they'd have to clear waivers (remember Quincey?). Unless I'm mistaken, we don't have any defensemen on the roster with us now that could be sent down without having to go through waivers, and at this point the defensemen we have would not clear waivers, so there's really not much we can do to help.

It's not so much that the salary cap has been set aside, it's more a case of the Wings won't have to worry about the salary impace their players have come playoff time. As the players don't get paid for the playoffs, the cap is a non factor. Meaning come playoff time Detroit can call up Helm, Abdelkader, Ericsson, Leino, et al and not have to worry about sending anyone back down, or placing anyone on Long Term Injured Reserve to get us back under the cap. For instance, right now since the Wings are so close to the cap, we can't call anyone up to back up Conks since Ozzie is injured. There's only 2 ways we could clear up the cap space to call someone up. The first way is to send someone back down to Grand Rapids, but that player would have to clear waivers. The other way is to place Ozzie on Long Term Injured Reserve, which means he must miss a minimum of 10 games, or 24 days. But if Ozzie's groin strain turns out to be minor, and he's ready to go after 5 games, for instance, then he would still have to remain on LTIR until the 10 game/24 day mark has passed. In the playoffs, we can call everyone up and not have to worry about sending anyone back down or placing them on LTIR.

Extensions can't be signed until January 1st. So, sooner rather than later is still a bit of a relative term. The 2 sides have been talking, but I doubt we're gonna see anything right away. Before the playoffs, most likely, but I'd be surprised to see anything happen for a few weeks/months. My guess, is that Holland won't get much done on the extension front until we know exactly what the cap is going to be next year...
