    Is anyone disappointed....

Keeping as much room with the cap as he did helped us out a bit this year though. Any bonuses that were included in the contracts would have been applied to last season's payroll, so we should have zero carryover salary wise from last year to this. Yeah, an extra free agent might have been nice in the beginning of the year, but we obviously did alright in the end last year. No harm, no foul. As far as this year, if we make it to the deadline with no need for trades, that's what I refer to as a "high quality problem."

Wow. Just. Wow. That's amazing, considering the salary he was rumored to be commanding... Welcome to Detroit, Marian!

    Tampa get Malone, Roberts...

Let's see... NHL Team's "Road to Ruin" checklist. A - Hire ESPN analyst as coach. CHECK. B - VASTLY overpay for free agents. CHECK. C - Sign overpaid free agents to long term contracts (optional). CHECK.

    Re: Sundin

The only agreement is that Montreal has permission to speak to his agent about the possibility of playing for the Habs. As Sundin is still under contract to the Leafs, no team in the league may speak to him or his agent about signing without the permission of the Maple Leafs. All this does is give Montreal a week and a half head start in free agency talks. While it's nice to have, it is by no means a guarantee.

    NHL approves 3 rule changes

Didn't see this posted anywhere else. Please merge/delete if it's already posted. NHL Approves Rule Changes on Faceoffs, Icing The NHL Board of Governors approved 3 rule changes for the upcoming season, regarding faceoffs and icing. No, no touch icing is not part of it... The first rule is that the first faceoff of a power play will be held in the penalized team's defensive end. The second is that any contact made during a chase for icing MUST be incidental while going for the puck, instead of being an attempt to check the other player out of any chance of getting the puck. The third is that if a puck is deflected off the goal frame (i.e. post, crossbar) and into the mesh, the faceoff will stay in the same zone, rather than possibly moving it back to center. Also, they hinted at changes to come in regards to goalie equipment...

    Wings Concept Jersey

Case in point... If we absolutely have to wear a vintage sweater, then I prefer it be this, since the logo is a little different, along with the sleeves. Pics courtesy of NHLuniforms.com
  11. As if Lidstrom wasn't already a lock prior to last Wednesday, it's almost a dead certainty that the #5 will hang in the rafters. Ozzie's a tougher case. I love the guy, and he has delivered 2 Stanley Cups, but I don't think that he's had the kind of legendary career that's needed to get the number retired. He's a fan favorite, for sure, and he's had a damn good career, even opting to re-sign with a team that hung him out to dry when Hasek was brought on board. But I just don't think that that will be enough. Of the current Wings, and former Wings that are nearing retirement (I'm looking at you, Sergei Fedorov), I really only see Lidstrom's number being retired. Zets and Pavs... Please... Let's postpone that talk for 15 years, and then we'll see... *edit* getting my facts straight

    Official: Hasek announces retirement

A legend, through and through. Glad that he will be able to finish his career a Red Wing, and with a Stanley Cup to celebrate with as well!

    Thank you, Matt

Hey Matt! So, it's been entirely too long that this thread has been up, and I've not been able to post in it!! But I have a valid excuse. I was in Waco all this week (7 hours away), with very limited internet access. Yes, I have an iPhone, but typing out a message like this on those little bitty keys would give me instant carpal tunnel... It's hard to describe how much these boards mean to me. There's no other place to find up to the second news, not only for the Wings, but the NHL in general. Plus, the quality of (most of) the posters here is second to none. There's a reason that this page is the first, and usually last page I visit on any given day. Not only that, but this page has given me an avenue to meet many different Wings fans throughout the country. Being able to spend time with your family in January and May, meeting vladdy16 and betterRED, as well as many of the members of RWNW... None of it would have been possible without this site, and I would still be stuck in my corner of the world with no one to talk Wings news with! I'm proud to be a member of LGW, and stand side by side with everyone here to extend my heartfelt thanks for the hard work that you put into keeping this site running as smooth as it does. Also, thanks to the Mods for keeping this place RELATIVELY (in)sane!

2008 SCF Game 6 GDT: Red Wings 3, Penguins 2

HELL YEAH BABY!!! Way to go Detroit!!! WHAT a win! Sadly, I was unable to watch the game with all my hockey friends at home, as I'm out of town on a training trip for work. HOWEVER, it wasn't too bad, as I got to watch the game on the hotel's MASSIVE 70"-or-so Plasma screen! What a way to cap an amazing season. Words can't describe the emotion. So good to see the guys who have worked so hard to get here FINALLY get rewarded. Dallas Drake gets it for the first time, Z gets the Cup and the Conn Smythe, Franzen, Babcock... You just can't say enough. CONGRATS to the 2007-2008 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings!!!

    Roster for game 5?

Barring injury to Lilja or Lebda, there won't be any change made there. If Homer's ready to go, then Mac sits for him. Babs is as big a believer of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" as it gets. Zero chance of him taking away speedy youngsters to make way for slower veterans just so they can get one last hurrah. If (please notice, Hockey Gods, I said if) Detroit wins the cup, they'll be on the ice in full gear celebrating with the rest of the team. (In case you don't remember, Jiri Fischer was suspended by the league for game 5 of the '02 Cup Finals, but was on the ice just like everyone else for the celebration). So don't worry, they'll be there with their teammates for all of it, regardless of if they play or not.

    Jersey Question

Quick question, along the lines of the thread but a bit off topic... I've been contemplating ordering an Edge jersey, but the only sizing guides I can see are the numbered sizes (48, 52, 56, etc). I have a bunch of the older style CCM jerseys from years gone by, and I only order them in size XXL. What would be the comparable size to an XXL? For a bit of reference, I have an authentic weight jersey for a now-defunct local hockey team, that's a size 56, and it's the right fit in everything but the sleeves (which go a good 3-4 inches past my fingertips).

That's a bit much... Wishing him failure is one thing, wishing that he never makes the playoffs again, I can see that... But tragedy is a pretty harsh thing, especially in light of what happened to Vancouver on Thursday...
