There's another option too, depending on the CBA negotiations. If an "Amnesty" buyout is given in the new CBA, does Calgary buyout Iginla? If so, he'd be a free agent, and might be available to sign without any kind of a trade. (I realize there's a whole bunch of "ifs" in that statement, but it could be a possibility...) However, Iginla only has one year left on his deal, so the Flames might keep him around after all...

Agreed. I think contract length limits will be added in the new CBA. I like the idea of balancing the cap hit by using the average salary, but I think the Kovalchuk situation signaled the beginning of the end of that practice. Also agreed. There has to be some kind of consequence to a GM’s actions. I imagine the GM's will push the owners pretty hard for some kind of “Amnesty” buyout. Probably a one time buyout period like they did with the last CBA, and like the NBA did recently. Give GM’s a chance to buyout one player (maybe more) at no penalty, up to a certain date prior to next season. But after that, they’re saddled with any contract they sign, with stiff penalties for future buyouts. I’d imagine they might try and work out an option for teams currently paying those penalties to be free of one of those buyouts (i.e. Nashville could be free of their buyout to J.P. Dumont, or TB and Vinny Prospal You’re 3-for-3.

The biggest sticking point in the last CBA negotiation was the hard Salary Cap. Since that was the biggest thing the players were against, and the owners got the hard cap anyway, there's always the chance that this CBA negotiation will go smoothly. I could see the main sticking point this go-round being the players share of the revenue, though. The article brings up a good point, though. Last time around, there was heated rhetoric and blame gaming from both sides for months leading up to the cancellation of the existing CBA. Whereas there hasn't been anything that I've seen this time. Hopefully that means that both sides realize another lockout would be catastrophic to the league and the players alike. Get this thing done in a timely manner, please. The last thing we need is another round of millionaires vs. billionaires fighting a very public war over money.

I believe he could, but from what I've seen, I don't think that he wants to. As mentioned previously, Puck Daddy has a pretty good article on the WHY Hunter stepped down, whereas most other articles just give you the who/what/when/etc.

18 total bases in one night, good for an AL record. With his 8 RBI, Hamilton tied or outscored every other MLB team playing that night. Those are some amazing numbers. Career game, no doubt. It was great to see the O's fans giving him a standing ovation after the 4th home run too. Class act by their fans.

Nashville would have zero chance at both keeping Suter and landing Parise. They have 15 players (8 UFA, 7 RFA) to try to re-sign (or replace), including Weber, Suter, both Kostitsyn's, Radulov, Gill, Bouillon, and Tootoo. If we assume that the cap goes to $70 mil, that leaves 15 players to sign with $43 million in cap space. There's just not enough room to sign their crucial players (Weber, Suter, the Kostitsyn's) to raises over their salaries this year, AND try to land Parise. Even if they managed to pull that off, they would have no offensive depth, very little defensive depth past Weber & Suter, and one of the most expensive goalies in the league. Not exactly a good way to pursue that whole "one goal" thing. But I'll agree. Suter in Detroit? Yes please!

Yeah, CapGeek is the go-to site for most of LGW regarding possible signings and trades. Little known fact, our own Matt helped design their current cap calculator with their most recent overhaul.

Mass Effect 3 is taking up most of my gaming time right now. When that's done, I'll finish up inFamous on the PS3 (one of the free games I got as a "Thank You" when the PS Network was down for over a month). And then, probably go mildly old school, and play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the Xbox. Downloaded that years ago from the Xbox Live Marketplace, and I usually play it once every year or so. That game easily has one of the best soundtracks ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPvbJAzJspc

The closest I've seen is this... https://twitter.com/#!/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/197676677587939328 https://twitter.com/#!/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/197678051839049728 So, nothing really saying that they're not going to buy him out. More a case of crossed wires to where the report came from. McKenzie then goes on to extrapolate why buying Gomez out is a mistake at this point, but nothing that solidly refutes the report.

Agreed, on both counts. I would expect that if the NHL came up with an amnesty clause, they would try and limit the number of players that could be bought out, or at the very least give a deadline (Say, a week before free agency). If the NHL did come up with an amnesty clause, then the available free agent pool could get more interesting once Parise & Suter sign (wherever they sign).
