There's no mistakes. The Organization doesn't want to sign to many guys for more than 2 years. Zetterberg is a UFA then, and we need the cap space to pay him what he deserves. No one available this off season is as good as Z, so why even bring them in and risk losing Zetterberg?

I'm happy with Rafalski. Souray reminds me to much of McCabe.
-
Oh right, my mistake. 6 times then.

All due respect to Fedorov, but Yzerman and Howe are the two greatest Red Wings of All-Time, and there's really no debate about it. With that said, Yzerman was the most important Red Wing in the 1990's. Not only was he captain, heart and soul of the team, but he led the team in points 7 times in the decade (1989-90, 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1996-97, 1997-98, and 1998-99). If you want to compare that to Fedorov, Sergei only lead the team in points twice in the 90's (1993-94 and 1995-96). FYI, Coffey was the only other Wings player to lead the team in points in a season (1995). Again, all due respect to Fedorov, he was awesome, but I don't think there's any doubt Yzerman was the driving force, most talented, most important, whatever you want to call it, Red Wing of the 90's.

Kenny, Iron Mike, Scotty, Jimmy D, Stevie, etc. are sentimental guys, so you never know. $500,000 to allow McCarty wear #25 in Detroit again and retire as a Wing, maybe good money spent to them. For a team like the Wings, a half a million is peanuts really.
-
Crazy idea, but how 'bout we sign DMac for the League Minimum, and let him retire a Red Wing after 2007-08? Just like Drake, if he doesn't work out, for $500,000 or so, it's no big deal. I also like the thought of having Darren to work in the front office after his career is over.

Hank, Defenseman13 is a Sharks fan. FYI, we have fans of other teams post here as well, i.e. Sharks, Flames, Oilers, Leafs, Black Hawks, Blues, Preds, and whoever else I missed. Oh, to answer the original question, yes I like what's going on.
-
Well there's a reason why he was only signed for $550,000. I got nothing against the guy or the deal, but I'm sure the body is wearing down.
-
I played the 1989-90 Pistons vs the 2003-04 Pistons, 1989-90 won in 7 Games.
-
Well, it's not really a deal to get to excited/bummed out about, whatever side you are on. To me it's more or less a whatever kind of move. If Drake doesn't work out, at $550,000 who cares? If it works, great!! I just hope at 38 people don't expect him to lay out huge hits all the time.

Yashin is better than anyone else available. Not that I want to sign him, I'm ok with what we have and adding at the deadline, but if people here are set on bringing in someone else, Yashin is the next best guy.

http://www.whatifsports.com/nhl/boxscore.a...110937&ad=1 I what if'ed another game between the 1995-96 Wings @ 1976-77 Canadiens, and again the time on ice was brutal! Grimson 27:23 Errey 20:49 Lidstrom 16:58 Yzerman 13:46 Ciccarelli 12:28 Fedorov 12:28 Larionov 11:48 As if!? Didn't the NHL use this program for the Greatest NHL Team Tournament during the lockout? I followed a long a bit, but when I looked at the time on ice, it lost all credibility in my mind and I stopped checking out the results. It's because the time on ice is all screwed up. Draper only had 3:56, all on the PP, and Franzen just 1:06, total, and all on 5 on 5. Also, look at the 89-90 side, Gallant 29:58, Kocur 23:54, and Yzerman 16:44. Also, did you see that Williams and Calder played in the same game for 06-07 ? Edit: I know it's only sim, but it needs to be more realistic or else it loses credibility. Ok, I did one more, 1996-97 Wings @ 1995-96 Avs. Kozlov had 0:41 seconds on ice THE ENTIRE GAME!? KOZLOV!!

http://www.whatifsports.com/nhl/boxscore.a...110911&ad=1 Cool site, but the ice time is very unrealistic. Check out this game I had against the 1951-52 Wings @ 2001-02 Wings. If the top players played that much they'd die.

I agree with the Discussion. No complaints from me, I like what's going on. We need to re-sign Zetterberg in 2 years, so there's no point in bringing in more contract and risk losing him. Also, we have so much young talent right now, that we should let them play and see who's in our future plans.
-
It's their own fault for continually supporting the Leafs losing tradition.
-
Our moves this off season were based on Zetterberg being a UFA in two years. We need the cap room to give him what he's worth. Holland doesn't want to commit to anyone for more than two years so we can keep Hank. It makes a lot of sense to me. Edit: Other than 3rd or 4th line forwards or 5th or 6th defensemen, what top 6 forward or top 4 defensemen going to want to sign for just two years?
-
I'm sure there's probably better guys available at the deadline. It's a good idea to have some room to bring someone in for the playoffs. By the deadline teams have a better idea what they need to win compared to July 6. Howard needs one more year in the minors. That's the main reason Hasek is back. Plus there's Liv too. Why sign a guy for more than one year with Howard and Liv almost ready to go? I'm just wondering if anyone else noticed how Kenny got rid of Jason Williams contract last year (he was signed up to the 2007-08 season), and replaced him with Calder at the deadline (signed until 2006-07), to help free up money for Datsyuk's big contract starting in 2007-08? He's doing the same thing with Zetterberg. Notice how Lidstrom is signed up to when Zetterberg becomes a UFA. If Nick sitcks around, it allows us to lower his salary. Edit: Despite what some people think, Kenny and company know what they're doing.
-
I think a lot of you are missing out on two things Holland said: 1) "our plans for the future" 2) "Henrik Zetterberg can be a free agent in two years, so we're not looking to add anybody significant for more than a two-year deal because we want to keep Zetterberg." Signing someone else long term for big bucks makes no sense at all. Zetterberg deserves a big pay raise, and if we want one of the best players in the league around, we need to keep things clear. This isn't 2001-02 anymore, there's a salary cap to deal with.
-
Don't forget in a couple years we need to give Zetterberg his due and pay him what he's worth. IF we added a Drury, Gomez, Smyth, Briere, etc. there probably would have been a chance we wouldn't have had room to re-sign Hank. I'd take Zetterberg over Drury, Gomez, Smyth, or Briere anyday!! No question!
-
Same here, I like the guy but he was driving me crazy playing in front of the net on the PP. He couldn't get out of the way of the shot from the point, and the puck kept hitting him. If I remember correctly, it happened about 3 or 4 times.

I'm with you Rice. I'm getting sick of all these discussions. I'm glad were didn't bring back Schenider, Lang, and Bertuzzi for the prices they were signed for. Calder I would have liked to seen back, but I'm not upset he's gone. I think a lot of people are forgetting who we already have on the team: Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Datsyuk, Franzen, Filppula, Hudler, Cleary, Draper, Maltby, Grigorenko, Kopecky, Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Chelios, Lebda, Quincey, Hasek, Osgood, etc.. We're loaded with talent, and a lot of it is young too. The reason why Colorado got Smyth, Philly got Briere, NYR got Drury and Gomez, is they had the cap room and actually needed scorers. We have Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Holmstrom, so we really don't have room for another high scoring forward. Edit: I really like the team Kenny and company have put together.
-
Yes let the kids play. We have a lot of young talent, let's see what they can do. The only UFA left I'd like to see us sign is O'Neill. Even if Hasek is our last signing, we're still going to win the Division this year, and we'll have a lot of wiggle room for the deadline. We'll be ok, no need for everyone to worry. Last year people were freaking out, and not only did we win the West in the Regular Season, but we also made it to the Conference Finals.

I guess if you're an average or backup goalie, a goal for yourself is to try and get traded to Toronto. They'll throw the starting job at you, and pay you big bucks before you even have to prove yourself. Sounds like a good plan!

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/article.jsp...704_123522_5196 Wow! A 2 year $8 Million extension for a guy who's been a backup his entire career? What are they smoking in Leaf Land? You'd think they would have learned their lesson with Raycroft. I don't see why they felt they had to extend his contract now. What was the big rush? Man, let the guy prove he's capable of being a starter first, then give him $8 Million if he's worth it. Edit: I wonder in a year's time if they'll be trying to get rid of his contract too.
-
For what we're probably going to have to pay Dom, bringing in Raycroft for $2 Million to back up Ozzie is an interesting idea. Maybe Ray can only play 30 games. Raycroft and Ozzie will only cost us only $3 Million in Salary, freeing up money to sign a few more solid players and having wiggle room at the deadline. Who knows, Raycroft maybe better with less work and an excellent team in front of him? I think with Hasek, we need to quit while we're ahead. Well it's not like he'd be the #1 guy here. He'll probably play only 30 games.
