Speaking of the book, has anyone got their copy yet? Anyone read it all? It's not available in bookstore in the Toronto area, so I'm having it ordered in. I should have it by the end of the week .

That's a good point. However, I don't think the majority of Hockey fans remember that on thier own. Claude's turtle sticks out in most people's minds.
-
That was great stuff, thanks for posting the link. I like what Scotty said after the Brawl Game, "This all could have been avoided if he said sorry". I think it pretty much sums it up.

Lemieux hit Kozlov back, it should have been over with right there. Edit: Claude took it to the next level with the hit on Kris. Atleast Foote and Kozlov went into the boards together. Lemieux hit someone smaller than him from behind. It was totally uncalled for. I think it's better that McCarty has made Lemieux look like coward for the rest of his life. Lemieux will never live down the fact that he turtled when confronted face to face by someone his own size. Justice was served.

To help full the 10 pages, why don't you get reactions from all 3 Stanley Cups? 1997 Final, I remember where I was for the 4th game the best out of all 4 games for obvious reasons. I was invited over to a friends house that night, there was about 15 of us going. The reason to get together wasn't to watch the game, it was just to hang out and have a good time. Since most of my friends at the time were Leafs fans, I was really the only one interested in the game. A few hours before people started going over I called the house and told them I would only go over if I could watch the game. They didn't mind, so I decided to go over. If they minded, I was going to stay home, I wasn't going to miss Game 4 for anything! While I was there I remember a few of the girls there didn't want the tv on the game. I pretty much told them "suck it!!" and, "The tv is staying on the Hockey game!!". Myself and one other guy were watching it. He's a Leafs fan, but was still cheering for the Wings. Were going crazy on the Lidstrom and McCarty goals, especially the McCarty goal. We were told to keep it down a couple times, but we didn't listen. I was telling people, "It's been 42 years, I'm going to get excited!!". When we won and Stevie held the Cup, I couldn't believe it, especially after 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996 disapointments. Game 1 I was at another friend's house. He's a Habs fan. Before the series, all we heard was how great the Flyers were, and also about all the Russians on the Wings and there inability to win a Championship. Watching Game 1 I remember having this feeling that "wow, we may finally win the cup". We were playing so well and everything just seemed to click. Games 2 + 3 I don't really remember where I was, which probably meant I was watching them at home with my parents . That 1997 playoff run was awesome!! Edit: I was 20 at the time, just finished my first year of College.

I don't want Forsberg either, he's to injury prone. Plus we already have a Forsberg, his name is Henrik Zetterberg.
-
Since it's all hypothetical, if I was Florida, I wouldn't trade Horton for Zetterberg.
-
Would Florida even want to trade Horton? I'm sure they're thinking towards the future, and Horton would be an excellent guy to build around.
-
No thanks to Roberts. Great player, but he's 40 and to injury prone. The more I think of Lapointe in Detroit again, the more I like it. I take back my comments from a few days ago about being annoyed with Holland for bringing back players from our 1997, 1998, and 2002 teams. We've talked about adding Tucker if possible. I'd rather have Lapointe than Tucker. Marty's only 1.5 years older than Darcy, and eventhough they're about the same height, the thing I like best is that Lapointe weighs about 40lbs more. Tucker I think would be to much of a target, where as Lapointe can strike a little more fear in opponets. Plus it would take more in a trade to get Darcy, Lapointe maybe fairly easy to trade for. So long story short, I'm saying "Bring back Lapointe!!" Our 1997 and 1998 Cup teams were loaded with players we developed in the system. 2002 as well with Fischer and Datsyuk. The key to our success since the late 1980's has been our drafting and development. The team you're talking about is more like the Maple Leafs.
-
Yeah I was thinking Marty would probably take #21. I don't know about the rest of you, but it would be weird for me seeing Lapointe without #20.
-
If we get Lapointe at the deadline, who wears #20? Will Lapointe offer Langer something to get the number back?
-
Yeah, they are 4th in the East. It'll be a close and entertaining game. It's on tv here in Canada, so I'll be watching
-
I'm a big Lapointe fan, but he's turning 34 in September. I liked the teams we had in 1997, 1998, and 2002, but I'm starting to get annoyed at Holland bringing all these guys back. I guess it depends on what it'll cost us, and how much he has left in the tank. Marty is better than nothing I suspose. This time around, I hope he doesn't take stupid penalties late in the 3rd period again.

I agree. Just think how much more lights out our pitching staff is going to be after this post season run. If we can't rerun 1968, we'll be back. Think of all the pitchers we have under the age of 27 though. Other than Jones and Rogers, our young arms are experiencing their first taste of Post Season Play.
-
I'd rather face Puljos then Eckstein in a clutch situation. You want to see a guy who gives it all he has every game, it's Eckstein. Man, he played great game! It looks like it's finally the Cardinals year. Joe Buck mentioned this a couple times that our young pitchers are high on talent, but low on experience, and I have to agree. We know from being Red Wings fans that you need to lose first before you win it all. If we can't comeback, atleast we're gaining a ton of experience. Plus, you know Iron Mike won't rest until he wins a World Series.

I'm pulling for the Cards, but they blew it last night. I think Game 6 was a must win with Carpenter on the mound. The Mets are going to win tonight.
-
I agree. Nothing against "The Captain", but one of the popular ex-Tiger players should be out there. Still a funny quote by the host about not wearing pants.

Loser.

Sounds good, but has Lou made an appearance at either Tiger Stadium or Comerica since he retired? Remember he and Chet Lemon wouldn't stand for the Star Spangled Banner because for their religious beliefs. I would be a little surprised if Lou come back out on the field and draw attention to himself. Getting a hand by the fans outside of playing ball maybe against his beliefs too, even though he deserves it. Was anyone listening to 1270 Sunday after 1:00 when someone called in and said Yzerman should throw out one of the first balls? I don't know the name of the radio host since I'm out of town, but he said something like this, "Good idea, but I think if the Cardinals win the NLCS, Kaline will have priority. Horton may get Game 2". When the fan said Kaline already threw out a first ball, the host added, "Who know's, it may be 'The Captain". Yzerman can do anything he wants in this town. Hell, he can even walk around without and pants and not get arrested". I thought it was funny. I agree. Plus, if we are wanting to stick with what works, Rogers should continue to pitch at Comerica, which is why I think he should get Games 2+6. With that in mind, maybe Bondo should go Game 1, then Rogers, and have Verlander and Robertson pitch in St. Louis ( I may have jumped the gun because, as I type, Game 6 just started). Bonderman and Rogers have only pitched at home, while Verlander and Robertson have gone on the road. Whatever Leyland does, I trust him. However, I'd like to see if the series goes 7, Rogers, Bonderman, and Verlander get 2 starts while Robertson throws only one.
-
I'd got with Kenny for Game 2, so he can pitch Game 6. He's lights out at Comerica. My rotation for the World Series would be: 1. Verlander 2. Rogers 3. Bonderman 4. Robertson I think Tigers in 5 if we play the Cards, and Tigers in 6 if we face the Mets.

I've been a Baseball and Tiger fan my whole life, but Magg's HR was to me as exciting as when Shanny put it in the empty net in 1997 vs. Colorado to eliminate them from the playoffs. What a great moment! One more round to go, and we can really party ! I watched the game with my Dad and Uncle at my Uncle's house. When Magg's hit it, we all jumped out of our chairs, arms raised, yelling/screaming, etc... My Uncle was yelling pointing at the tv, "It's going out, it's going out, it's going out!!". Man, my stomic was in knots the entire game. I said to my Dad and Uncle, near the end of it when it was really close, "I haven't had this tense feeling since the 2002 Stanley Cup run". You gotta love sports!! Right. I think the 2006 Tigers are a lot like the 1997 Red Wings. They are unbeatable right now!

I agree, the 1997 Stanley Cup is my favorite moment as a Detroit fan, 2nd is yesterday's victory over the Yankees. I'm not downplaying the 1998 and 2002 Cups, 1984 World Series, or the 1989, 1990, and 2004 NBA titles, because those were unreal, but it just shows how big of a moment that was beating the Yankees . I really can't agrue with that statement. Looking at it realistically, the Tigers pitching has gone to the next level and the hitters are working the count now instead of just going up there and wacking away. We may have to start planning another Championship Parade . Nothing against the Wings and Pistons, but if the Tigers win the World Series, the celebration could be the 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2004 Championships combined. We could see 2-3 million people trying to jam into the streets of downtown Detroit.

I know what you mean. My two favorite sports are Hockey and Baseball, and I'm usually dying for the NHL season to start. This year is really weird, I know the Wings have started, but they are an after thought right now with good reason.... Go Tigers! I've been thinking the last couple days, this is a real special time to be a Detroit Sports Fan. I was born in 1976 and I've seen 7 Championships, a ton of 1st place finishes, and many playoff series victories. And with the Red Wings, Tigers, and Pistons Organization all run first class and are amoung the top teams in their sports, I know I'll see many more moments. It's a lot of fun cheering for Detroit.

Detroit Tigers should have been AL Central Champs!
Barrie replied to Steve Z's topic in Other Sports
By the All-Star Break I thought we'd slow down and take the Wild Card, and here we are. I know fans are disapointed, but realistically we weren't going to continue winning every 2 of 3 games like were were in June. It's October Baseball, and we're going to the Bronx, I'll take this anyway I can! Edit: Actually in August I told a friend I don't care what happens in the final standing, I just wanted to see the Tigers-Yankees go at it in the playoffs. As I said in my earlier post, I can't wait until Tuesday!
