  1. If Dats was going to get injured, at least it's not his leg. Maybe he can heal quick and come back in 3 weeks?

TSN ranks all major league sport franchises.

Ok reading some of the comments, I don't think people understand how the teams are ranked. It's based on ownership, ticket prices, fan's bang for the buck, and championships. With that in mind, the Leafs should be last. I saw the list, and I think ESPN did a great job, despite what some people think of ESPN's hockey coverage.

Dekeyser signed. 2 yrs $2.187 million AAV

Good move! Ok so after the Tatar and DeKeyser deals, Holland will need about $5.5 Million cap space to sign Smith and Nyquist next off season. Don't expect any UFA or deadline moves. The Quincey deal makes more sense. There will be cap space available when DeKeyser's deal is up.

Leiweke Leaving Toronto after 1 year

Good move, get out, and stay away, from Toronto.

    Datsyuk or Fedorov?

Right. Also another comparison between the two, Dats is only 22 career Assists behind Fedorov. When Pavs career is over, I don't think there's much of a debate if he's a HOF player. They're different types of players. Fedorov was more of a Russian style power forward (a Russian power forward is different then a North America power forward), Datsyuk, as mentioned is more like Larionov, but takes more shots and can take and give out a hit. I don't know about that. Prior to 2006-07 Datsyuk got pushed around. He got into the weight room put on muscle, and he went to the next level. I think he would have been fine in the 1990's. Larionov didn't have much trouble in a rougher era.

Sharks enter training camp with no C or A's

Yea, but if San Jose was Detroit, Joe wouldn't have lasted this long here. Us Wings fans would have booed him and Marleau out of town after 2010-11. Plus Joe would have received huge criticism from Wings fans and media for not shooting enough. I think taking the C away from Joe is the right thing to do. The Sharks need new leadership.

    Datsyuk or Fedorov?

This isn't a knock on Pavs, but the Hockey Hall of Fame is the easiest HOF to get into, Dats will get in. He'll retire with 2 Cups (at least) and over 300 career goals. I'll take Fedorov over Datsyuk. Feds won the Hart, 3 Cups, and had 30 or more goals in a season 10 times. Fedorov career's better then Datsyuk, Datsyuk is in, so no question Fedorov.

What Might Have Been: Gretzky to Detroit?

Don't forget, 1987-88 was the year Yzerman blew out his knee on the goal post. Stevie missed the last 20 or so games of the season and only played in 3 playoff games. The Oilers probably weren't interested in taking a risk on him. Add to that, Yzerman didn't really become "Steve Yzerman", until the next season. Carson was the bigger star at the time. Looking back, it's better the trade didn't happen. I think with Gretzky we probably would have won the Cup before 1997, but who knows if we would have won it 4 times.
  9. Good move. I'm still not really sure what Holland could have done since 2009 to make things any better. We're rebuilding through the draft. With the Cap, and how over inflated the UFA market is, it's the way to go. We haven't missed out on a thing by not signing guys like Ehrhoff, Clarkson, and Wisniewski, or Suter or Parise to 13 years.

What Might Have Been: Gretzky to Detroit?

I'm one of the biggest Yzerman fans around, but yes I would have traded Yzerman for Gretzky back in 1988. I'm glad it didn't happen though.

2014 Offseason League Signings and Trades

Another person on this board that has no idea how the Salary Cap works. I was around here when the 2005 lockout was going on. I was only one of a few posters who didn't want a salary cap, because I knew it meant we couldn't go out an sign guys like Hull, or get Chelios at the deadline anymore. The majority of people here wanted a salary cap, and now they expect things to still be like it was in 2001-02. Can't have it both ways. How many people have looked at the Leafs http://capgeek.com/mapleleafs/ they're in trouble next year!

Tatar Signs 3 Year Deal $2.75 mill AAV

Holland's mushroom in his basement, as I've been told by a friend who posts here too said someone called me, thinks this is a good move. DeKeyser is next, then Nyquist, Smith, Jurco, and Andersson next off season. We need the cap room to sign them, so no UFA signings next year either. Just a warning

    Alfie wants to play

There isn't any room for Alfie. We have $8 Million Cap space left, but once Tatar and DeKeyser sign, we'll have 23 players on the team. Add to that next off season Smith, Nyquist, Jurco, and Andersson are RFA's, with only Cleary and Gus off the books after this year. We need Cap space and spots for our RFA's. When you look at the Wings cap situation and who's an RFA, there was no room for an over priced UFA. Makes the Quincey 2 year deal look that much better, instead of being on the hook for 7 years and almost $6 Million with someone else.

Babcock Interview on 105.1 this morning

Quincey isn't a bad contract, it's only for 2 years. Niskanen and Orpik, are bad contracts.
  15. Barrie

Dekeyser signed. 2 yrs $2.187 million AAV

No worries they'll sign. Holland doesn't sign over priced UFA's for this reason. There's more then enough cap room to sign Tatar and DeKeyser, then Nyquist and Smith next off season.
  16. The downside of winning is thinking you have to keep guys instead of moving forward. Since there's a cap, and at that price, if I was Chicago I would have signed Toews, but let Kane become a UFA. Having $21 Million tied up in 2 players is insane! Looking at Chicago's cap situation, they better win this year, because a fire sale will happen next off season. Those contracts have just increased and already over inflated UFA market. Drafting and developing your own players just became even more important!

    Holland Wiki page edited

Yea, but no one says what they'd do as GM. I bet if the average Red Wing fan became GM, he/she would make horrible trades and sign over priced UFA's. We'd be like the Leafs and our team would be build around guys like Kessel, Phaneuf, Lupul, Clarkson, van Reimsdyk and Bozak for the next 4 years plus. No thanks, I'll take Kenny, who's building the team with the draft, isn't signing any over priced UFA's, and actually knows how the cap works. I understand signing Quincey and Cleary isn't "sexy", but they're only 1 and 2 year deals. That Niskanen deal is insane! Smith and Dekeyser are going to be better then him. Unless a team has drafted the player, I don't think any UFA should be signed for over 4 years. Do an online search and see how many horrible long term UFA signings there's been since 2005-06. The Wings don't have any bad ones over 3 years. The only potential bad one could be Weiss, but he's got a few years to still make the deal a good one.
  18. It's only a 1 year deal for $1.5 Million plus, so there's really no reason to get upset. I would think only rookies and guys still RFA's make less then $1.5 Million. We know if Cleary doesn't produce Babs will put him on the 4th line. I don't mind seeing guys like Cleary given a chance to finish off their career with their head high, he's done a lot for the organization, instead of being kicked to the curb.

Confused on the direction of this team going forward

People here seem to forget there's a Salary Cap. I think it's obvious Holland is building through the draft, and won't overpay for UFA's. Teams that build through the draft win Championships, teams that sign over priced UFA's don't. Hindsight is always 20/20 vision, after the 2009 playoffs if Holland signed Hossa over Franzen there would have been a riot! Hossa was a letdown in the playoffs, while Franzen had 12 goals, and 13 the year before. I think based on what both players make, and the points they've put up, Franzen vs. Hossa has been a wash.

It's too bad about us having Weiss...

Just think what 50 pts from Weiss, and a healthy Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen, and Helm would mean for us next year. A 1st round exit against Boston wasn't a bad thing, guys have a chance to heal. Add to that, full seasons from Nyquist and Jurco.
  21. If Moore wins, guys like Neely, Savard, Lafontaine, etc could also sue. Moore won't win just based on what could happen next.
  22. Barrie

    Players from within the organization

It's why we don't have to make trades, or over pay for a UFA, we know how to develop our own players. And there's more good young players on their way.
  23. Seriously? Has anyone looked at http://capgeek.com/mapleleafs/ and they want to add Legwand? They'll have to give him a 3 or 4 year deal, to go along with the mess they already have. The Leafs management doesn't have a clue about the cap!

Article on FAs and Red Wings

People need to check http://capgeek.com/redwings/ Tatar and DeKeyser need to be signed this off season, and Smith, Nyquist, Jurco, and Andersson need to be signed next off season. It's not smart to be signing UFA's when 6 of your future core players need contracts in 12 months.

    Dont Jump Yet...

Just to add to the "our lack of ability to sign (any) big name free agents" comment. None of them were really big names, just over priced due to the lack of any actual big names becoming available. All the big names are signed long term!
