And go golfing in April?
-
The Selke is the award for the forward who plays the best defense. This often ends up being a skilled defensive forward who has been in the running for the award a couple times and then has an unusually high offensive output, a la Draper 2004 or Peca 2002, without a necessary improvement of defensive play, and sometimes even weaker defensive play. It has never been awarded to an offensive forward who has improved his defensive game from liability to above average.

Bure was fast, and was one of the best goal scorers. Fedorov was equally fast, and was also one of the best goal scorers. But Fedorov also was a dominant defensive forward, a great playmaker, and an extremely strong and durable player capable of playing any position at the elite level. Among players in the league this year, Bure vs Fedorov is most closely compared to...Brad Boyes vs Pavel Datsyuk. Boyes isn't the scorer Bure was, and Dats isn't the defensive forward Sergei was...but the comparison is similar. Which player would you take?
-
Yzerman was a very good defensive forward when Bowman was still coach in Buffalo. Bure was never anything other than a defensive liability.

All of your lineups are off by at least one player. Ericsson will not be in the regular lineup next season. That said, I expect it to look something like this: Cleary/Zetterberg/Samuelsson Filppula/Datsyuk/Holmstrom Franzen/Hudler/Kopecky Maltby/Draper/McCarty Downey Lidstrom/Rafalski Kronwall/Stuart Meech/Chelios Lebda Quincey Osgood Howard If Stuart doesn't resign, or if Chelios retires, Lilja is resigned and replaces them.

It's a hell of a lot closer to reality than what the op posted. EDIT: Just for clarification...if you consider Zetterberg and a 1st fair for Ovechkin, you are still giving up Lidstrom for Green. That's INSANE.
-
I think it's more like this: VIAGUERETM Helps keep it up, even when you go down.
-
If he does that, the Black Hawks might be the only team willing to sign him. Would you sign a player who uses his stick and skate to chip away at his opponents?

Should Sergei Fedorov's number be retired in the future?
eva unit zero replied to Chaldean's topic in General
If you retire Fedorov, you have to retire Osgood. It stops there. Shanahan was a big piece, but he was a hired gun. He spent nine years in Detroit and many of them were good, but there are players who have spent more good years than Shanahan with the Wings and not had their number retired. Ullman and Goodfellow to name a couple. Fedorov was once the league's top forward as a Wing, and was a home grown product. Shanahan cannot claim either of those distinctions. In fact, every player with a retired number in Detroit was at one point the best at his position (F/D/G) in a Detroit uniform. But the next most deserving player of jersey retirement who has not yet received it after Lidstrom is Osgood. That's how you should gauge your feelings on Fedorov. Do you think Ozzie deserves it? If the answer is no, then it has to be no for Fedorov as well. Ozzie was also once the top goalie in the league. Beyond Osgood, the only other recent players who have been the top F/D/G as a Wing are Konstantinov and Coffey. -
Datsyuk will not win the Selke. Realistically, he shouldn't even be nominated. It is a trophy for BEST defensive forward. Not most improved defensive forward or most improved two-way forward, both of which Dats can make an argument for.

So you're saying you'd have traded Yzerman for Selanne in 92-93 then?
-
Would you have said Selanne had more trade value than Yzerman in 1992-93? Because that's the closest comparison I've found to Z vs Ovechkin as far as ages, plus a two-way forward who is very good in both ends compared to a guy who is an elite goal scorer and decent playmaker, but lacking in other areas.

It's his visa. And he has previously stated that it was a spelling error, and that 'W' is correct.

I dislike Pronger as much as the next guy, but I'm going to have to say this. After seeing it, I don't think it's worth more than five games. As much as we all would like to believe Pronger wanted to chop off an opponent's leg, it really does seem like he is simply off balance and trying to get free for the most part. I don't think he intended to stomp on him with the blade, but was trying to kick Kesler's leg out of the way and wasn't exactly on target. Hence the 5 game call I put forth. Simon's stomp was MUCH worse.

Who do we WANT to play in the first round?
eva unit zero replied to Statiklullaby87's topic in General
The Lions. -
It is a fact. That fact is borne out by the fact that plus-minus leaders are usually top line forwards whose primary role is scoring, and not defensive stalwarts who play on the third line in a shut down role because they are much better defensively. RARE is the player who can play shut-down type defense AND be a top line scorer. Most of the league's top defensive forwards won't be seen near the plus minus leaderboard because they are one-dimensional players focused entirely on defense. Example: Rod Brind'Amour won the Selke last season with a +9, tied for 80th among forwards. He won it the previous season with a +8, which tied him for 67th. While I don't personally feel Rod should have won in either season, it proves the point that plus-minus doesn't equate to a Selke victory, which means that Selke voters don't see +/- as a stat that indicates defensive ability.

A fair deal for Filppula would be three years for a total of between $5m to $6m. So anything fair or higher for Flip would yield a minimum of three first round picks. Ultimately, if someone tenders Flip to an offer sheet above said value, the Wings are better off not matching it, as there is no way Flip is worth 3 first rounders in trade.
-
Datsyuk isn't even the best two-way player on his team. That said, he's still top five or ten in the league.
-
I will say again. Plus-minus, with relation to forwards, is driven by lines that have good offensive succes, and have more offensive success than their counterparts. This is a statistical fact. Most forwards towards the top of the plus-minus charts have at least one regular linemate nearby. Of the top 30 forwards in +/-, only Getzlaf, Parise, Sharp, Stastny, Gaborik, Sundin, and Perron do not have a regular linemate also included in the group. Sharp is about the only guy there who belongs anywhere near the Selke conversation. All of the remainder except Perron are their team's top scorer by a significant margin this season. And takeaways are a better gauge of skilled forecheckers than anything else, and even this must be taken into the context of ice time...a guy with ten takeaways in ten games playing ten minutes is not a better forechecker by this metric than a guy with 8 takeaways in 8 games playing 10 minutes.

Eight. But even more impressive is that it's 12 of 15 that the Wings have hit 100, and one of the 3 misses was 70 points in 48 games.

Hasek has sore back. Ozzie to start tomorrow night.
eva unit zero replied to 96warrior's topic in General
I simply take issue with the fact that ALL SEASON people have slammed Osgood and praised Hasek based on name. Things such as 'there's no way Ozzie keeps up this overachieving. He'll be around .905 and 2.30 at the end of the year' as compared with stuff like 'Hasek always starts slow, it's no big deal.' and 'No matter how he's playing come April, Hasek is the only guy the Wings have who they can start in the playoffs.' This contrasts heavily with what I have said, which are 'the goalie who is playing better should see the majority of the games in a given time span' and 'whoever is playing better in March and April should start the playoffs.' If Osgood outperforms Hasek from here on out, he deserves the nod in the playoffs. If Hasek, then he should start. I realize there's a 95% chance of Hasek, regardless of what happens the rest of the season barring injury, but that doesn't mean I will necessarily agree with the decision. We'll have to wait and see. -
Downey as the first star is about as laughable as it gets with regard to this game. Here's who I would have picked for the three stars tonight: 1) Pavel Datsyuk. 2) Jiri Hudler 3) Johan Franzen

eva unit zero replied to 96warrior's topic in General
I am not saying Ozzie has been better in the past month or so. I am not saying Dom shouldn't be starting the playoffs. All I was asking was why, when we have a situation where one goalie has played more and posted better numbers in doing so, are people saying that it's a no-brainer for the guy with worse numbers to be playing more of the games, and I wonder if the same thing would be said if the situations were reversed and Ozzie was the one who had started the season shakily and then come on. If the numbers were reversed, and I suggested playing Ozzie more of the games because he had been better recently, people would be like 'But Hasek has better numbers, and come on he's HASEK. Osgood is OSGOOD.' Like those are reasons in and of themselves. -
You must be some kind of flaming retarded n***** homo, aren't ya!

Ericsson does not have to clear waivers next season. That is why he will be in GR; because Quincey and Meech have to clear waivers and wouldn't.
