There is a couple major difference between Jones and Lemieux, though. Jones was already initiating his hit when Bergeron began to turn. Lemieux began his hit with Draper already facing away. Jones was hitting Bergeron as he came into possession of the puck. Lemieux hit Draper after the play had left the area. Jones' hit was far less suspension-worthy than Lemieux's. I feel Jones should have received closer to five games, but I can accept two. Lemieux getting two was a horrendous decision.

I know for a fact Yzerman led the scoring race at least once...I believe it was in November or December of 99. Shanahan and McCarty were his linemates at the time.

While I have heard some malice towards Kubina, I haven't had the opportunity to watch a Leafs game this season, and every stat he has is looking good; points, plus-minus, shots blocks, giveaways, takeaways, hits are all solid numbers. I admit my lists were compiled largely from statistical observations rather that having seen a high number of games. One thing to take in to consideration, though is that Kubina, just by the numbers, appears to be doing considerably better on both sides of the puck this season that last. Last season he had 21 points, +7, 110 blocks, 100 hits, 50 giveaways and 27 takeaways in 61 games...he has 9 points, +9, and 9 takeaways, 23 hits, 29 blocks, 9 giveaways in only 13 games...which projects to 42 points, +42, 42 each of giveaways and takeaways, 108 hits, and 136 blocked shots over 61 games. That's noticeably better in every single category, especially points, takeaways, blocked shots, and plus-minus.

Which active player will have his jersey retired?
eva unit zero replied to timothy1997's topic in General
Recchi played what, 4 years for the Flyers? Not happening. Kariya will never be retire by teh Ducks...he was over paid, and they offered him a small pay cut so they could bring back Selanne. He instead chose to take a much larger pay cut to play with Selanne in Colorado. Possible. Blake had a couple good seasons, but hardly anything worthy of jersey retirement. These are no-brainers. Each is the franchise's greatest player ever. Smyth wasn't good enough to warrant it if he HADN'T left town over pennies. Hard to argue against any of these four guys. Draper is a career third liner. His number will NEVER be raised, and the mere THOUGHT of such things is ******* stupid. -
You can't get less than nothing, which is what Leipold was getting from Balsillie; Balsillie, not Leipold, was the one who refused to enter a binding agreement before the BoG had approved the move of the team. As the BoG won't rule on such things until a binding agreement has been reached, and all new owners must make a good faith effort to keep the team in their current market, Balsillie's mouth and deposit tactics are what prevented the sale. Not Bettman's alleged interfering.

He's near the top in every important goaltending category, and he has been ******* phenomenal on the ice. I don't expect him to be there at the game, but he's played well enough that if teams were made today, he'd be there.

Matthias has the lowest expected ceiling of the prospects that would have been acceptable to trade for Bert. And it's been said many times during this young OHL season that trading Matthias was a mistake, because look he's leading the OHL in scoring. Whin in turn implies that giving up Matthias was a mistake, because he's a badass prospect who's going to tear up the league. In hindsight, I wouldn't have made that deal. But that has more to do with the fact Bertuzzi has had exactly one good game since we made that trade, and that was the first Wings game of this season.
-
The goal was disallowed becase Pyatt knocked the puck in by knocking the goalkeeper in, and did so after the whistle.
-
Matthias is going to be a good third line center in the NHL. Nothing more. The fact that he is keeping up with Tavares in the scoring race doesn't change that. It's like Tampa Bay's Chris Kontos in 1992-93..he scored 4 goals in the team's first game, and kept up with Mario Lemieux in scoring early on. Kontos had a league-leading 20 goals by the end of November, but finished with only 27 goals and 52 points, and never played an NHL game after that season.

It's like how the Wings last year had a good record because of their division, even though pro-rating their points for increased or decreased games vs opponents based on swapping divisions with any other Western team would stil have landed them atop the conference. Seriously, though. The SEC has exactly two teams with two or fewer losses. The Big Ten has four of those. Yet people act as if every SEC Team would win the Big Ten easily. The BCS computers will favor the SEC because there is no dominant team or group of teams, meaning that every team will have a respectable strength of schedule number. With the Big Ten, you have two teams that have gone undefeated in conference play, while after this coming weekend, LSU or Alabama will have one loss, and every other SEC team will have at least two. People will always say 'well the SEC has seven ranked teams' without realizing the fact that rankings are based on perception; if the perception is that a 3-loss team in the SEC is better than a 1-loss team in another major conference, that is how people will rank them. The SEC currently has four 3-loss teams that are ranked in the AP top 25; no other conference has any ranked 3-loss teams, while there are four teams from BCS conferences that have two or fewer losses and are unranked. While the SEC is probably the most talented conference, it is not to the degree people seem to be suggesting. Of course, if we look at all teams that received votes, there are six Big Ten teams and eight SEC teams that picked up votes, with four Big Ten teams just outside the rankings compared to early season darling Kentucky as the lone SEC vote getter to not rank. And how is USC still ranked so high?? They have gone 2-2 in their last four games, and only one of those games was against a ranked opponent.

GST...if you truly believe this statement applies to the way Stevie was...you have never seen the man play. That said, Yzerman never resorted to the chippy unprovoked dirty s*** guys like Iginla are getting slammed for.
-
Yeah, he does seem to suit the uniform...

5-10 games is what I'm thinking should be handed down.
-
Jones' hit had nothing to do with icing; it was one played gathering up the puck from a dump-in and another player viciously boarding him. That should be a significant suspension, although he didn't seem to have the intent to injure like Downie and Boulerice, so it shouldn't be that steep.

Grigs' contract with the Wings was just shy of 900k; his AHL compensation was closer to 70k.

What does Kaberle have to do with Russian hockey?
-
The argument that Alfredsson shot the puck at Niedermayer is ridiculous. He was at center ice with time running out, and he went to take a last second shot. Sami Pahlsson was in the way, so Alfredsson tried to shoot around him. Pahlsson stuck his stick out to prevent Alfredsson's shot, and it deflected off Pahlsson's stick. Look at the 1:26 mark of this video: Niedermayer was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What's to stop Chris Chelios from causing opposing goalies to gush blood from their foreheads?
-
Judging by the comments from Holland and Datsyuk...perhaps he wants to go back to Russia so he has a greater opportunity to work on things like conditioning? Anyone who makes a judgement about whether Grigs is lazy or not based on him not making the team this year, or on him not getting into top shape in a couple weeks, is jumping the gun.

Proof Jesse Boulerice is incapable of learning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aNG4uOpwUI

You can't believe it because it's not true. 1.8m take home would be close to 3m before tax in the US, which is more than Markov was being offered.
-
Which means we'll see Grigs next fall in training camp, and either he makes the team then or he's never playing in the NHL, Detroit or not.

This is a BS rumor. Tavares is not eligible to play in the AHL until the 2009-10 season. While the minimum age for the AHL is 18, Tavares is an OHL player. The minimum age for an AHL player who has played in Canadian Major Junior is 20. This prevents NHL teams from stockpiling the top 18 and 19 year old Canadian talent in the minor leagues if they are not good enough to play in the NHL right away. Also, Toronto cannot sign Tavares to an NHL contract as he is under 18. Even if Toronto signs Tavares to a minor league deal, that gives them zero control over his NHL rights. If he is drafted, he becomes property of the team that drafted him, regardless of any minor league contract. The team that drafts him would have to give up NOTHING to the Leafs. EDIT: Correction; Tavares will have played 4 seasons in the CHL after the 2008-09 season, making him eligible for the 09-10 AHL season.

I want to see the lines look like this based on our current 12 forwards: Hudler/Zetterberg/Holmstrom Filppula/Datsyuk/Samuelsson Cleary/Draper/Maltby Ellis/Kopecky/Downey

I was just about to post this one...it's the brawl that ended HOF referee Bruce Hood's career.
