I have never once said that I felt Michigan was good enough to win the championship or deserved to be there this season. I simply stated that the App State loss didn't affect the BCS computers, which makes it a better embarrassing loss than say EMU, which would be just as bad from a human voter standpoint, but WOULD affect the computers, and is much later in the season. The BCS basically uses a combination of 3 rankings. If there are no one-loss teams left at the end of the season that haven't played Michigan, and Michigan wins out, that means Michigan has a good chance at ending up in the top 3 or 4 in the polls. If they winall of their remaining games and nobody else goes undefeated, 3 or 4 in the polls might be enough to get a berth in the title game. Now, you have to realize that's a LOT of Ifs, many of which likely won't happen. But it's still a chance.

So you bring up personal good stories about other sports, but you say 'well i've heard' for bad stories about the NHL? Well I'ev heard (from posters on this board, no less) about plenty of good experiences involving NHL players, including both Fedorov and Shanahan.

Just for reference, I didn't say Michigan had a realistic chance at the title game. I said it's THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE. Realistically, there will probably be at least two other one-loss teams that do not play Michigan. I outlined the only kind of situation in which Michigan would go to the title game, and recognized it as UNLIKELY. But I guess people just feel the need to bash me for not being suicidal over a football game.

Given that going into the season the Wolverines had a very inexperienced defense, it was unreasonable to expect more than a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl berth. So I would call the season disappointing if Michigan does win out from here on out, but only because that would mean the team was definitely good enough to go undefeated and get into the title game. Michigan still has a strong chance of doing that, but USC destroyed Michigan in the Rose Bowl last year, and returns most starters while Michigan lost most of their defense. Anyone who expected Michigan to beat USC this year was pretty optimistic.

Unfortunately for the Leafs, most of those NHL-capable guys are third and fourth liners and bottom-three defensemen. Using LGW TradingTM they could put together two lines full of all-stars, along with a top-four that includs only top-ten defensemen. And a Vezina contender in net.

So you're telling me that if Michigan runs the table, and there is one other one-loss team, being Ohio State, that the pollsters would put two 2-loss teams in the championship game? Because if Michigan beats OSU in the final regular season game, and both teams then have one loss, it would be ridiculous for OSU to be in the national championship game over Michigan. Which means that either you see Michigan/OSU, Michigan vs a 2-loss team, or you see two 2-loss teams. I am by no means saying Michigan will go to the national championship game or even that they'll deserve to go...but it is NOT impossible. Simply improbable.

I wouldn't want to get any of the retired numbers in training camp for the Wings...it would be a sign of 'you have no chance, kid.' Kindl is better off on the top pairing in GR this year than on the third pairing in Detroit. The Wings already have seven defensemen who can't be sent down without clearing waivers, and Kindl can. Lilja and Lebda both played solid hockey last season, so there is no reason to make a minor upgrade and rush Kindl.

Harrington played very well when Culpepper was out, and is a better QB than Leftwich. It's difficult for any QB to succeed when he is expected to not only win every game, but to do it without an O-line or a defense.

I have to be honest. I wasn't expecting anything like that today. I am going to look on the bright side though, and that is: Michigan's defense played SIGNIFICANTLY better in the seocnd half than it did in the first. With a lot of inexperienced players starting, that is a damn good sign of a season that isn't lost. Losing to Appalachian State has zero impact on the computer rankings, which means Michigan still has an outside shot at the national championship game if they run the table, because the computers would consider them undefeated. Losing in the first game of the season to App State is a significantly better loss than, say, losing on October 6th to Eastern Michigan. Voters tend to view conferences like the MAC as comparable to I-AA schools, and losses to them by major conference teams as the same as a loss to a I-AA school. If the Wolverines were to go 11-1, they would see a much higher ranking with the App State loss than with an EMU loss. Also..what happens if there are three remaining one loss teams, and they are at the top of the BCS, and those three teams are Michigan, OSU, and USC with a loss to Oregon? That would mean that Michigan beat OSU, and that USC lost to a team Michigan beat. I'm not calling this scenario, but you can't seriously tell me that Michigan doesn't end up in the title game in that situation. Because you can't include OSU over Michigan at that point--OSU winning the title over USC after they had just lost to Michigan would be a pretty bad outcome from a publicity standpoint--the loser of the sport's biggest rivalry game goes to the title game and wins, while the winner goes home with a better record but no shot at the title? And they wouldn't put a two-loss team over a one-loss OSU team. Realistically, Michigan will probably end up between the 5-10 spots, which is what I would have said last week too.
