The Hockey News Top 50 current players

I think both lists have some pretty noticeable flaws, such as Cheechoo in the top 30 on THN, or Nash, Parise, Gonchar, or Sedin anywhere near the list. My top twenty would probably be something like: 1. Nicklas Lidstrom, D, Detroit 2. Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh 3. Martin Brodeur, G, New Jersey 4. Roberto Luongo, G, Vancouver 5. Henrik Zetterberg, C, Detroit 6. Alexander Ovechkin, LW, Washington 7. Joe Thornton, C, San Jose 8. Chris Pronger, D, Anaheim 9. Vincent Lecavalier, C, Tampa Bay 10. Marian Hossa, RW, Atlanta 11. Daniel Alfredsson, RW, Ottawa 12. Joe Sakic, C, Colorado 13. Dany Heatley, LW, Ottawa 14. Jaromir Jagr, RW, NY Rangers 15. Martin St. Louis, RW, Tampa Bay 16. Miikka Kiprusoff, G, Calgary 17. Ilya Kovalchuk, LW, Atlanta 18. Jarome Iginla, RW, Calgary 19. Sergei Zubov, D, Dallas 20. Marian Gaborik, LW, Minnesota

    Fantasy Hockey Leagues?

There are usually two types of leagues; Head to Head leagues, and Rotisserie leagues. In both leagues, there are a number of different 'chosen' statistics used for scoring. In a Head to Head (or H2H) league, each week your team is put up against another team, and you win, lose or tie categories. These wins, losses, and ties are added to your overall record, which determines standings. In a Rotisserie league, your cumulative total over the entire season is usd in each category, and you receive points based on your rank. We'll use a 12-team league for examples. Some leagues would award 12 points for first place and getting the most points wins...others would award points equal to your rank, and the fewest wins. Ties are generally handled by dividing the total points for all positions occupied by the tie by the number of positions occupied; for example, a three way tie for second place would yield 10 points (or 3 points) for each team involved, while a two way tie would yield 10.5 (or 2.5) and a four-way tie would yield 9.5 (or 3.5) points.

    Michael Vick

I would argue that Vick's crimes are worse than robbery, assault, and drunk driving. It's not just dogfighting; he executed animals inhumanely due to their poor performance in fights. A comparable situation would be the difference between situations of the prison system forcing inmates to fight, and one where it not only forced fights, but then executed those who did poorly, regardless of the reason they were in prison.

Treasurer Hunter finds Stanley Cup Ring

Assuming Wikipedia's entry on this is accurate... Not sure how the length of time affects it, as well as the fact the ring had been given away to the player's father-in-law, and he, the most recent owner of the item, is now deceased, affects the situation. If it is deemed the player did not give up rights to the ring when he gave it to his father in law, then he should legally get it back for no fee or reward.

one step closer to a team in vegas

Realistically, every city in Canada capable of supporting a team has one. There are MANY cities in the US capable of doing so that don't have one.

Asham looks like a good fit on the surface, but as Ihave said many times since he signed with the Devils for LESS THAN HE WAS MAKING BEFORE, there are one of two situations that caused Asham to sign the deal with the Devils. Either he wanted to stay in the NY area and was willing to take a pay cut to do it, which meant Detroit had NO CHANCE at signing him, or he had locker room issues and the cap-troubled Devils were the only team willing to take a chance on him. I would bet on the former, but either way, he wasn't coming to Detroit. He was no more available than Chris Neil is now. A fourth-line, part-time enforcer who only plays games when the opponent is a 'tough' team and only plays a few minutes will likely spend most nights in the playoffs in a suit, not a uniform. The Wings need players who can contribute in more ways than just fighting. Players like those are generally hard to come by, and despite popular opinion Holland has made efforts to acquire those guys (Clark, Chelios, Bertuzzi, Witt, etc.)

    PROSPECTS CAMP

One thinks perhaps just having been selected in the CHL draft might be enough, looking at the evidence.

Actually it's a centurion, if you want to get technical.

    Well, we're a season past Yzerman's retirement

How does Hasek equate to Sawchuk? Sawchuk began his career in Detroit and spent most of his best years in the Winged Wheel. He posted several hundred wins and played for the team for many seasons. Hasek came in as a past-his-prime goalie who was still very good, but close to retirement. Hasek will always be thought of as a Sabre first, because that's where he spent his best years and most of his career. I would equate modern-day Red Wings to heroes past more in this fashion: Yzerman/Howe Lidstrom/Kelly Fedorov/Lindsay Shanahan/Abel Osgood/Sawchuk

If Vegas is a comparable market to Phoenix, then it will (like Phoenix) support its team significantly better than Winnipeg, Hartford, or Minnesota did.

    NHL Tournament of Logos

Upon the realization the Sens intend to use the 'forward facing' logo as their standard logo going forward...I have to yank them from my top five. Replacing them will be the Boston Bruins at #5. The Thrashers logo moves to #4.

So what dumbass made the decision to use the stupid looking logo instead of the excellent looking one?

Ahonen was a group IV UFA last summer from what I can dig up. No longer Devils property.

man do i miss stuff like this,....

I disagree. Having Neil would not have prevented Stuart from taking a run at Z. If a player is going to try and injure another player, he will do so enforcer or not. Claude Lemieux is an excellent example...he wrecked Draper's face with guys like McCarty, Kocur, Lapointe on the team. Lapointe was only about five feet away at the time. Why wasn't Lemieux deterred?

Did anyone on Edmonton lift a finger to 'defend' Jarrett Stoll after Markov leveled him at center ice? No. Not a single person did anything. They all stood around and waited.

    Nick Zherdev

Zherdev's attitude problems were around long before Fedorov. Zherdev is a puck hog and a me-first player. No matter what some have said on here, Fedorov is not a me-first player or a puck hog. The fact that Fedorov, a lock as a hall of famer as a center, was willing to switch to defense when asked by Hitchcock, and that in those 13 games he played the position better than any Blue Jacket defenseman had, makes him a good role model as he gave it his all to help the team win, even though he was sacrificing individual glory.

one step closer to a team in vegas

I for one am in favor of expansion by two teams, although I don't know if I would want Vegas to be one of the two. I would rank Vegas as the fourth option, after Portland/Seattle (only one would get a team due to proximity, likely Portland), Kansas City, and Houston. Portland and Kansas City seem to make the most sense out of those cities. Expansion to those two could produce divisions like this WESTERN CONFERENCE: -Calgary, Edmonton, Portland, Vancouver -Anaheim, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose -Colorado, Dallas, Kansas City, St. Louis -Chicago, Columbus, Minnesota, Nashville EASTERN CONFERENCE: -Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto -Buffalo, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington -Boston, New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers -Atlanta, Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay EDIT: To swap in Vegas for Portland, rotate Colorado in place of Portland, Phoenix in place of Colorado, and Vegas in place of Phoenix. To swap Vegas for Kansas City, rotate Phoenix in place of Kansas City and Vegas in place of Phoenix. To swap Houston in for Portland, rotate Colorado for Portland, and replace Colorado with Houston. No other teams need to move to replace KC with Houston or to replace Portland with Seattle.

Ahonen is no longer listed among the prospects on NHL.com or hockeysfuture. NHL.com does list Frank Doyle, who is a year older, as a Devils prospect, and HF has said that Jeff Frazee is now looked as the goalie of the future due to the failure of Ahonen to pan out. That seems to suggest Ahonen is no longer in the Devils system.

Jersey Numbers: Drake #17, Kopecky #82

Possibly it was that he wasn't playing with Hudler anymore...

Should Sergei Fedorov's number be retired in the future?

Osgood was at one point the league's best goaltender, and was among the top handful of goalies in the world for most of his time as a starter with the club. Draper has never consistently played on a line higher than the third. I would say Lidstrom, Osgood, Fedorov, Shanahan, Konstantinov, Kozlov, Larionov, McCarty, Vernon, Hasek, Probert, Chiasson is a list of Wings that Draper has played with who are more deserving of jersey retirement than he is. And I've probably left off guys as well. The fact that you criticize for the suggestion that Osgood is the most deserving player after Lidstrom, when he is the only goalie in Wings history other than Sawchuk to post anywhere near the kind of numbers he has and was a dominant netminder in his prime, and then return with 'the next most deserving player is a career third liner' is laughable.

    Peca Signs with Columbus

New York has a weaker blueline than Columbus, as scary as that is. Honestly I think the only major difference in talent at any position between Columbus and New York is the goaltender. If Leclaire can live up to his supposed potential, and the chemistry works out with guys like Nash, Fedorov, Zherdev, Vyborny, Peca, Brule, Novotny, Fritsche, and Modin, then Columbus definitely could be a higher echeleon team in the conference within a couple seasons. The average age of Columbus' core players (top 6F-3D-1G) is 27.6, as compared with New York's 30.2. Columbus has four core players under 25, while NYR has none.

The Caps only have six defensemen and twelve forwards signed. They also happen to have around 13.5m in cap space. They need a top four defensive defenseman, and they need a top line right winger. Is it just me, or would Selanne and Markov be perfect fits? EDIT: One other thing I have noticed about the Caps...they have the weakest future of any NHL team as far as goaltending is concerned. The only other team that has no current netminders under 30 and no goaltending prospects projected to be starters is New Jersey, who has the reigning Vezina winner in Martin Brodeur, and has former journeyman starter (and former Canucks goalie of the future) Kevin Weekes as the backup.

    Babcock talks training camp

My argument is not that Cleary is a terrible player. It's that people are acting like he is this offensive dynamo, while a cold Lang was dragging him down, but that Lang's hot streak had no effect on Cleary or even worse, was a product of Cleary's amazing skill. People need to admit that Cleary benefitted from playing with Lang a whole lot more than Lang benefitted from playing with Cleary. And the same argument can be used with Z and Dats, although I would put Z in the role of Lang as he benefitted far less from the combination than Datsyuk did.
