Time for Kopecky?

Kopecky is a rookie making close to the league minimum who got limited minutes and played as well as your average third line in those minutes. Bertuzzi makes 5m a year and is playing like a 3rd liner. Yes, Bertuzzi's top end is higher than Kopecky's is right now. That doesn't change the fact that Kopecky displayed on many nights this year the ability to play better than Bertuzzi has been in the postseason.

    Time for Kopecky?

His level of play the past two weeks would suggest otherwise...

    Maltby staying in Detroit?

I would have to believe this means that Holland only intends on keeping one of Bertuzzi and Calder, or perhaps dropping both picking up one new forward as neither has looked particularly good in the postseason. Signed for next year from current roster: Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom Franzen/----------------/----------------- -------------/Filppula/Samuelsson Cleary/Draper/Maltby Kopecky Lidstrom/Kronwall -------------/-------------- Lebda/-------------- Lilja Quincey ------------- Osgood Howard So Holland has to sign: Schneider, Markov, Chelios, Hudler, two more forwards and possibly one more goalie.

GAME 4 GDT 5/2: Red Wings at Sharks LIVE

Rivet did not look great, but I would say Hannan was worse--Lang's goal was an awesome play by Filppula combined with good puck work by Lang. Hannan stood out as an undeperformer on the Sharks side tonight, and that was capped off by his errant flip to Schneider. Each team's three best players tonight: 1. Nabokov 2. Thornton 3. McLaren 1. Lidstrom 2. Schneider 3. Lang Each team's two worst players: 1. Hannan 2. Rivet 1. Bertuzzi 2. Draper

Robert Lang scores clutch goals because... Robert Lang BRINGS IT in the playoffs.

    Homer or Bertuzzi?

The key is that Hudler is noticeable in a good way--sniffin around the net, creating chances, digging in the corners, making plays. I haven't seen much of any of that from either Sammy or Calder. I would like to see Hudler getting more ice time as our problem has been scoring and he is one of the more offensively talented players we have.

Hasek voted 4th Best NHL goaltender ever

It's a pretty good website--it's got working statistic formulas that are pretty reliable at predicting Hart winners and figuring out Hall-caliber players.

    Hasek vs. Nabby

Hasek should not have comitted as early as he did. Even if it works sometime,s it's still a mistake. Cheechoo was able to score not because he made a great move, but because Hasek took himself out of the play. Hasek comitted, flopped, and then lost sight of the puck. By the time he realized where it was again, it was on its way into the net. Had he poke checked it or simply been patient let the shooter make the first move, there is no goal. Hasek's mistake was committing to the save before the shooter had committed to the shot. Cheechoo was not in the act of shooting when Hasek flopped--meaning he had time to react to Hasek's flop.

Hasek voted 4th Best NHL goaltender ever

Here's an interesting read regarding this topic: http://members.shaw.ca/hbtn/player_study/goalie_monitor.htm As far as I can tell, these numbers are as of 2005. This would mean 28th-ranked Chris Osgood's score right now would be 822, assuming you count OTL as losses for the calculation, and 833 if you count them as ties. Hasek's score would be 3008 or 3018 depending on how OTLs factor.

    Can We Talk About Bertuzzi?

I would rather sign Smyth than trade for Iginla. Iggy is UFA in 08-09, and already costs 7m...his price will go up. The quality difference between Smyth and Iginla is not vast...but we'd be paying less, not have to give up assets, and would be able to sign him long term right away for somewhere in the 4-5.5m range.

Babcock is not a good coach

Not true. Anaheim failed to make the playoffs in 2004.

    Paralyzed Snow Angel of Defeat

Chelios' stick. And no, it wouldn't have been 3-1...Cheechoo's goal was scored on a PP resulting from a questionable call on Draper on the same play that Chelios deflected the puck over the net. Had the Sharks scored, there is no PP.

Maybe he should go jump into a volcano.

    Post-GAME 3 (4/30): Sharks 2, Red Wings 1 F

Bertuzzi's slew foot was pretty blatant. I felt that the refs DID swallow the whistle later in the third--Hudler getting manhandled by Hannan around the net on a chance to tie the game, and then being held a few seconds later resulted in NO penalty, shortly after the Sharks scored the go-ahead on a PP resulting from a questionable call on Draper. The refs should call the game in the third exactly as they call it in the first, same in October and June. People get upset about late penalty calls saying 'the refs shouldn't be deciding the game' when in actuality, NOT calling penalties IS the refs deciding the game--if one team can get away with something in the final minutes that the other team did not get away with earlier in the third period, that can be a huge factor in the outcome of the game.

    Should We Keep Bertuzzi?

None of them retired that same summer...Ranford, Samuelsson, and Clark each played one more season, and Mironov played three...none returned in a Wings sweater.

Sounds pretty right on 3 of 5. As far as regular season goes, make that 4 of 5.

    Post-GAME 3 (4/30): Sharks 2, Red Wings 1 F

I only caught the last few minutes of the game... Is it just me, or did Hasek really misplay the Cheechoo goal? Most goalies, Hasek included, would normally have either waited or more likely poke-checked when Hasek flopped to his left, even though the shooter was going the other way. Not discounting Hasek's play this postseason...but that stands out to me as a huge mistake....along with Bertuzzi's slew foot with 3 min left and the no calls on the Sharks for manhandling Hudler repeatedly.

    1) Yzerman was more of a one-man team than Hasek was. 2) Roy and Brodeur always had great teams, but not Sawchuk. Sawchuk was in the bottom third of the league several times. Brodeur and Roy have each missed the postseason exactly once, and each time it was within two seasons of a Cup victory with that same team and most of the same players. Anyone notice this?

    This makes me faintly ill

Moving to 4-on-4 OT would not be a problem. The NHA, the forerunner to the NHL in which the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Queec Bulldogs, and Montreal Wanderers played (That's four of the original five NHL teams), they used a 6-on-6 system including the positions we know as well as the rover. Early competitor leagues for the NHL also used the rover--the PCHA, which competed yearly with the NHL for the Cup until 1926, had possibly the most famous player to ever play the position--Fred 'Cyclone' Taylor, who was Bobby Orr before Bobby Orr was.

    stupid fans

Fedorov held out the majority of a season for a contract, this is true. And factoring in the total maximum value of the deal and averaging that over the length, you do realize Fedorov signed for LESS THAN MARKET VALUE, even after holding out for ~60 games? Fedorov gets booed because some Wings fans take it as an insult that he didn't stay and win more Cups with the Wings. Other players from Cup winning Wings teams who left as FA (Shanahan, Lapointe, Dandenault, Hull, Robitaille) don't get booed for one simple reason--Fedorov was more valuable to the Wings than all of them put together.

    Can Robert Lang Come Around?

I am not making an argument for playing Lang more right now--he has been a disappointment in the postseason. I am making the point that a majority of LGWers seem to think that in the regular season there was the teams top 12 forwards, and then a huge gap, and then Lang.

    Can Robert Lang Come Around?

The second and third lines next season should be made of Hudler, Filppula, Franzen, Bertuzzi, Calder, and Kopecky. Probably something like Franzen/Filppula/Bertuzzi and Calder/Hudler/Kopecky.

    GDT Anaheim vs. Vancouver

The Hull incident was a byproduct of a midseason attempt to fix the crease rule. In January of 99, an addendum was added to the strict 'no feet' rule that said a goal would count with a player in the crease under certain circumstances. The player could remain in the crease after the puck left if he had entered legally, so long as he gained possession of the puck while it was in the crease, and remained in possession until the goal was scored. This was intended to stop breakaway goals from being disallowed because the puck carrier's skates were in the crease--see Peter Forsberg's breakaway goal against the Wings in game 5 for another implementation of this addendum. Hull's goal counted because of an unintended loophole. It was closer to the kind that should be disallowed except that it fit all the criteria of the language used in the addendum, and was therefore technically legal.
