    Hartnell claims first victim

Possibly. Bryan Marchment once received a ten game suspension when Mike Modano attempted to sidestep a clean hit and ended up locking-and wrecking-his knee as an off-balance Marchment tumbled through him.

    Our playoff lines

Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom--Best line in the league when they were together. Hudler/Lang/Calder--Also one of the best lines when they were together. Franzen/Filppula/Bertuzzi--two-way playmaking center with grinding wingers who can score a few. Cleary/Draper/Maltby--for the opposing top line on your Christmas list. Lidstrom/Markov Schneider/Chelios Lebda/Lilja Hasek Osgood

    Playoff Beards

If I go two days without shaving, I look like Jamie Macoun. That wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have to shave for work. Maybe they'll let me get by with a neatly trimmed playoff goatee...

    Our Prospects In The Playoffs

For all the Latendresse fans: Forward Justin Abdelkader scored the championship-winning goal in the NCAA, and was named most outstanding player.

    Flames already talking smack

If they run our goaltender, the refs don't call it because of Hasek's rep, and it causes a discernible difference in the outcome of the game, there is only one solution I can think of; switch goalies. The Wings are one of the few teams in the league that has two goaltenders capable of starting and performing well.

Who Was Our Regular Season MVP?

You guys know s*** about hockey. The CLEAR choice is the calm, collected Swede. You know, Stefan Liv.

CBC livid as NHL bows to Americans

Labatts and Molson are slightly better than Bud or Miller....but well below a Guinness, Murphy's, or even something like a Honey Brown or a Sam Adams.

Datsyuk Signs 7-year, $46.9M Contract Extension

In the first half, he was outscoring Datsyuk. In the second half, he has played a significant number of games entirely on defense, and his offense has dropped considerably. Had he remainned at center and scored at his first-half pace, he would have around 60-65 points. Fedorov was playing darn near $6m hockey at center. He has been playing $6m hockey on defense. Hard to argue he's been a bust given that. That said, Fedorov's former linemate is a notable bust as far as 5+ year deals go. Or did everyone just forget that Rick Nash's cap hit is almost as much as Fedorov's for far less on-ice contribution?

    Red Wings 1999 Draft Report

Predicting that a player will have the talent to succeed is a lot more difficult than predicting the Cup playoffs, with all the potential unforeseen injuries or fluke goals, etc. Although in 1997 I did predict the playoffs, series length and all, with only two series being off by one game each. I'd love to call it skill, but more recent history has proven that one a fluke.

Why would anyone pay that much extra just to get a little color in their water? Try drinking a Guinness or a Murphy's.

    Red Wings 1999 Draft Report

Articles like that make me feel good about my yahoo screen name I used during the winter of 99-00. h_zetterberg_future_superstar One supposes you had to actually watch the guy play to have a sense of how good he was, and would be.

CBC livid as NHL bows to Americans

Hmm...NBC is broadcasting to a much larger national audience. Both networks are concerned with what would best fit their ratings. Seems like going with the afternoon game is better for the league's revenue, popularity, and future.

    Flip and Huds

Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom Hudler/Lang/Calder Cleary/Filppula/Bertuzzi Franzen/Draper/Maltby Sammy had a great game the other night, but I'd still rather see him sit than anyone else. If you want him in the roster, sit Maltby, and skate Sammy in Cleary's place with Cleary on the fourth line.

#8 spot in east decided today by a shootout

Unfortunately, the shootout is the best option given the existence of the OTL point. A team that gives up a goal 4 seconds into OT gets the same reward as a team that lasts 5 minutes without giving up a goal. The ideal solution is to move to move to one of the following: Without shootouts: 2 pts for any win, 0 points for any loss, 1 point tie. 10 minute OT 4-on-4, as you and I have both suggested in the past. With shootouts: 3 points for regulation or OT win, 2 points for shootout win, 1 point for shootout loss, 0 points for regulation or OT loss. This is more fair than the current point structure, preserves the 'no lousy ties' situation, and gives more of an incentive to win the game before the shootout. Right now, teams will play conservatively in the OT because trying to score can end up costing you the game, and weaker teams get a better chance to receive the same 2 points in the shootout that they would receive in the OT, without losing anything by going to the SO.

The Wings better shut these guys up!

It doesn't matter if Dom gets hurt, contrary to popular opinion. The way that Ozzie played in big games down the stretch against Nashville is proof of that. If not for Ozzie's performance against the Preds, we are playing against the Sharks.

    Sakic re-signs

If Yzerman had never had a knee injury, he might have scored 200 points in 88-89. 155 points coming back from a serious knee injury that ended his season the previous year is just INSANE--look at Derian Hatcher's play after returning in 04, and in the UHL in 05 for a more typical example of what you look like the first year after a serious knee injury.

    Detroit Vs Calgary Predictions

Detroit in 5, and here's why: Calgary's biggest advantages last time were skewed officiating and a ridiculous advantage in physical play. The officiating should be much better with all the attention being paid to bad officiating the past couple years, and Calgary has lost physical presence while Detroit has gained it. Calgary won't be able to manhandle Detroit, and that will result in Detroit running the table at home and taking a game in Calgary as well.

    FoxSports' First Round Predictions..

You do realize that both Calgary and Detroit have changed considerably since 2004? Calgary is a little better offensively, not nearly as good defensively, and a lot less gritty. Detroit, on the other hand, still has the advantage in offensive depth, but also has improved greatly in the areas of defense and grit. This will be a totally different series than the last time around.
