#8 spot in east decided today by a shootout

I was kinda hoping to see something like this from Calgary and Colorado, but Nashville put a stop to that. Imagine how crazy THAT would have been?

Datsyuk Signs 7-year, $46.9M Contract Extension

Fedorov was traded because Burke did not like him. Had nothing to do with his performance--he was the team's best player. Remember in Vancouver Burke said, regarding a potential Fedorov trade 'we already have one too many Fedorovs in our system.' referring to Sergei's brother. Also of note: In his two seasons in Anaheim, Burke has traded away every Russian on the team except Bryzgalov--who stands a pretty good chance of being traded this summer. Maybe Fedorov's trade had more to do with the fact he's Russian than anything else? And he's been pretty damn good in Columbus.

    Sakic re-signs

Smyth was traded. Sakic signed a high-priced offer sheet with the Rangers as an RFA--the very same kind of action that made Fedorov a villian in Detroit. How does Sakic=Yzerman when his actions regarding loyalty and money match those of Fedorov?

Kronwall is the closest we have to an internal replacement for Schneider. So you think Nik is ready? If he's not ready to replace Schneider, nobody we have is. Schneider is already underpaid, meaning an external replacement either costs more or is a downgrade.

    1. Sarich will cost more than Markov. 2. Your roster doesn't include Calder. Hartnell is unlikely to be an upgrade over the way Calder has played for the Wings. That said, if we could get Sarich for 2, that frees up 750k from my scenario. That combined with the small amount of wiggle room left does open up enough space for Hartnell. Markov and Calder seems a lot more likely though.

Yzerman in 2000 with 79 points is the only first-time winner with 60+ points since Fedorov in 94. The complete list of first-time finalists to win and score 60+ points is as follows: 1983: Bobby Clarke, Phi, 85 pts 1986: Troy Murray, Chi, 99 pts 1987: Dave Poulin, Phi, 70 pts 1993: Doug Gilmour, Tor, 127 pts 2006: Rod Brind'Amour, Car, 70 points. Five winners of 28 were first-time finalists with 60+ points. Zetterberg should make that six in 29.

Hartnell makes 1.75m now. I expect his cost to rise to a minimum of 2.5m, more likely near 3m. Of the players the Wings will be resigning (or replacing for similar money) under the scenario I have laid out, only Schneider and Bertuzzi make more than Hartnell likely will get, and my scenario gets within a million of the expected cap. Bert and Hartnell means no Schneider, and nobody in Schneider's place. It means that our top six would be Lidstrom, Markov, Kronwall, Lebda, Lilja, and Chelios. Without Schneider on the PP next year, or anyone to replace him, it means we see Sammy on the point full-time. So, for the good of the team, it's Hartnell or Bert. Not both.

That will never happen with him on the same team as Malkin and playing significantly more than Staal. Staal probably won't even be top-two.

Sarich would be a replacement for Markov, and should cost about the same as the 2.75 I slated for danny inmy earlier post. Any more, and it's not worth it. Hartnell I would love, but that would mean no Bertuzzi. I anticipate the Wings will make every attempt to keep Todd before July 1st rather than lose him and end up with no replacement. If the Wings do not decide to sign Bert, I would love to see Hartnell for under 3m.

Pearson--Crosby likely. According to the THN player poll recently, he was a landslide choice as best player, and that should be a good indicator he will win the Pearson. Masterton--Hasek is seriously unlikely. Kessel is my pick. Lester Patrick--Lemieux has already won this, and it's a career honor type thing--someone who has done a great service to hockey in the US, usually as a long serving coach or GM who does well for an American team (Arbour, Bowman) or a great player for an American team (Yzerman, Lemieux) so a second win would be silly. I'm going to pick Mike Modano as one of the winners this year. Clancy--Yzerman is retired. The Clancy is awarded to players, not former players. This one is hard to pick, because it's hard to know what kind of humanitarian activities all players are involved in. My choice would be, for lack of a better candidate who hasn't already won (there has never been a repeat winner) Jir iFischer for his work regarding heart conditions and working to help minor and youth league arenas have the same kind of emergency capabilities that saved his life. Jennings--This trophy is to the goalie or goalies who played 25 or more games for the team tha tallowed the fewest goals in the regular season--what the Vezina was for years between around 1970 and 1983. This trophy is already the property of Minnesota's tandem of Manny Fernandez and Niklas Backstrom.

    Brodeur's acheivement

48 wins is impressive. Sure, not as impressive as Osgood's 39 win campaign-in only 50 games, mind you-but impressive nonetheless. You have to remember--Brodeur has played 78 games this season. If he plays tomorrow, he ties Grant Fuhr's NHL-record 79 games played. And given the fact that he, unlike Fuhr, is at or near the top of every category, it shows just how dominant Brodeur has been this year.

Also...Selanne may not be bad defensively, but he's nowhere NEAR Selke territory either.

Datsyuk Signs 7-year, $46.9M Contract Extension

The number under 'actual cap hit' is the player's cap number that year, divided by the number of days that have passed in the season, multiplied by teh number of days that player was on the active roster. In the far left hand colum, you can find the 'cap number' which is what the player's cap hit would be if he was on the active roster from start to finish. Also, new contracts do not affect the current cap hit, as was suggested during the lockout. Holmstrom's 2.25 per year deal is on nhlnumbers, but does not affect his cap hit until next season because that's the first year of the deal. Datsyuk at 46.9m for seven years is a good deal. I would have signed him to a 5.5m per year, 4 year deal if possible. That means in four years, he would have been a UFA. At that point, a three year, 8.3m deal is not an unrealistic expectation for Datsyuk to want, given his performance and the increasing cap. Better to suffer a slightly higher cap hit now that we have the space to afford than to suffer a higher cap hit LATER when we will need to replace some of the higher paid guys on our team like Lidstrom.

    07/08 Roster

Current wings signed for next year, and their cap number: Datsyuk 6.7m Zetterberg 2.65m Holmstrom 2.25m Draper 2.128m Samuelsson 1.2m Franzen .942m Filppula .733m Cleary .663m Kopecky .45m Lidstrom 7.6m Kronwall 3.0m Lilja 1.0m Lebda .65m Osgood .85m That totals up to 30.816m, with four forwards, three defensemen, and a goalie left to sign. The cap is expected to rise to about 47.5 million, which leaves 16.684m to fill out the roster. Roster RFAs expected to resign, and current cap number: Jiri Hudler .525m Hudler will likely be resigned for about .75m, leaving 15.934 to sign three forwards, three defensemen, and a goalie. Notable UFAs, and current cap number: Todd Bertuzzi 5.269m Lang 3.8m Calder 2.95m Maltby 1.406m Schneider 3.3m Markov 2.5m Chelios 1.15m Hasek 1.85m These guys total up to 22.225m. Hasek will likely retire, and Lang and Maltby will likely be let go as UFAs. We'll use Howard as the backup goalie as he is likely to make more than Liv. His .733 reduces the available amount to 15.201m for three up front and three on D. Calder should sign for about 2m. That would reduce the remaining cap to 13.201m Ellis or Bootland should sign as 13th forward for 500k, which means 12.701m. Schneider should sign for 3.7m or less. 9.001m remaining. Markov likely will sign for 2.75m or less. 6.251m remaining. Chelios could be had for 1m or less total cap hit. 5.251 remaining. Bertuzzi will likely be resigned for no more than 4.5m, which means the Wings shoudl have a minimum of 750k free cap space, with the only roster changes being Lang, Maltby, and Hasek out and Ellis/Bootland and Howard in.

Has anyone noticed that right now, the Wings' injured list has a better top-four defensemen than any other NHL team's complete roster? Lidstrom/Schneider/Fischer/Kronwall....sick.

Datsyuk Signs 7-year, $46.9M Contract Extension

If Dats is making the 6-7m per year TSN suggests, then Lidstrom will likely be taking a pay cut if he resigns after next season.

Datsyuk Signs 7-year, $46.9M Contract Extension

I was answering the question about first line centers in Dats' age range who make less than 5.5m It was simpler to use who plays on the first line than the top 30 centers--but you have to consider that I also left off guys like Marleau and Comrie who are first-line caliber, in Dats' age range, and make less than 5.5m
  22. eva unit zero

    Hasek is injured?

Well, Osgood is far more capable of stepping in and suceeding the playoffs than Emery was last year. So if it's deja vu, we're still fine.

Datsyuk Signs 7-year, $46.9M Contract Extension

Savard has consistently outperformed Dats offensively the past few years. This is the first season Dats has been noticeably better than Savard defensively, Even with Dats' huge season this year as plus minus goes, his career per-game average is still very close to Savard's, close enough to be offset by the teams they played on. I think Dats should end up with about 5.5m for four years.
