It should be Stuart or Ericsson out, not Kindl.

He doesn't have to clear unless he plays in ten NHL games or spends 30 days on an NHL roster from now forward. What he does in Grand Rapids doesn't matter. Brunnstrom and every other player in Grand Rapids (Janik, Exelby, Conner, MacDonald) who had to clear waivers to go down do NOT need to clear waivers to come back up until they hit that limit. Does everyone remember when Janik was brought up last season, and then sent back down? No waivers either direction (he only played 7 games). Same rule applies to Brunnstrom now. If call-ups are needed we'll probably see a little bit more of Brunnstrom, some of Conner, maybe some more Tatar and Nyquist.

What if you're color blind? Or the Doppler example HoH posted. It's also true that different animals or even individuals of the same species see and hear into different ranges; so "red" is entirely subjective. What if you're color blind? Ya gotta keep Hudler. If he's centering two enforcers, he'll score 300-400 goals because nobody will go near him. Prevention!

Dan Cleary vs. Johan Franzen, 2010-11 If Dan Cleary plays Johan Franzen's ice time, then Cleary scores 25-20-45 at ES, and 10-6-16 on the PP. So he'd have a total of 35-26-61 if he continued the same scoring rate per minute, and played the minutes Franzen did. Which is a completely reasonable suggestion given that Cleary played that amount of time per game, just a large part of it was on the PK.

Oooh, fantasy. How many years during his career has Lidstrom been the best fantasy defenseman? Actually, yes it was. He was waived and sent to the AHL. You don't do that unless A) the player is playing poorly or B) you want to use his cap space for something else. Souray is case A. Wade Redden is case B. Unfortunately for Redden, the Rangers realized that they now can't have him on the roster over worse defensemen because they would be over the cap, and last year traded a solid player in Tim Kennedy to get Bryan McCabe - equally expensive and no better than Redden - because they can't afford to get stuck with half of his cap hit losing him on re-entry waivers. Souray was placed on re-entry waivers, and nobody took him; he was subsequently reassigned to the AHL. Cleared waivers at full price and HALF price, headed to the AHL both times, and you're saying it's not because he was playing poorly? Please. Studly Wonderbomb is NOT a Norris contender, regardless of how nice a start he may have had.

Keith was the second best defenseman in the league the year before he won the Norris. Last year was the fluke year.
-
You can't just disregard other defensemen around the league and say "only Chara, Lidstrom, and Gonchar count." because that's not the case. Also, all of those defensemen played top-unit PP time. Kronwall plays second unit. when the Wings had Hossa, the second unit was as good as many #1 units. Kronwall scored 51 points. Look at ES scoring for defensemen the past few years; Kronwall is among the leaders most years. And better defensively than most.

Question. You want to bring in Smith because he's younger than Kindl, right? So why do you want to dump Kindl when he's been outplaying the more expensive Ericsson, despite being three years younger? Smith is much smaller than Kindl, not as good defensively as Kindl was at that age (and there's a much larger gap now) and really only has speed as an advantage. Smith over Ericsson maybe. Smith over Kindl? Not next year, unless something significantly changes from now until then.

Souray and Phaneuf have been scoring well, but still look bad defensively. No way they stay in the Norris conversation. I think your Phaneuf vs. Weber assessment is way off; Phaneuf has always been a huge liability defense. Only in the past 20-25 games or so for the Leafs has he played ANY kind of actual defense. Weber has always been pretty decent in his own zone, although not quite as good as a guy like Suter. Green and Phaneuf are much closer in playing style than Weber and Phaneuf, historically; save for the fact that Green is faster. Keith is not really that overrated. It's more that people look at his performance year last year and and think "how did this guy win the Norris?" when he was much better the previous two years.

Welcome to Big Leagues Gustav Nyquist!

Not the same. People compare Datsyuk and Fedorov as if they're identical. Datsyuk is an above average skater. Fedorov is one of the fastest and most explosive skaters of all-time. Draper worked with Fedorov because they could form a wicked quick rush with Draper's speed winging Fedorov's intimidating offense. It's like the idea of a Bure/Fedorov/Helm line. Intimidating because of speed, even though Helm isn't really all that skilled offensively. -

It's as I've said before; size has value. If White and Ericsson have the exact same season in all aspects, Ericsson is worth much more because he's bigger, even if his size advantage isn't actually utilized. If Kronwall were 6-5 instead of 5-10, he probably has a cap hit of $6m for 7 years. Even if he played the exact same game with the exact same hits. That aside, this deal is an absolute steal. Kronwall is worth $6m minimum based on other deals. One of the 15 best defensemen in the league.

And why is that a big deal? Of bottom-six players, he's about 8th on the depth chart in the Wings' organization. And he's tiny. No big loss if he gets claimed. Speaking of which, he didn't get claimed at the beginning of the year; not sure if the "recently exposed to waivers" exemption would still apply to him but it might. I think it does because I don't recall Janik having to clear waivers to be called up and Janik has far more NHL experience.

Filppula/Datsyuk/Hudler Nyquist/Zetterberg/Franzen You know it's coming. -
Don't get me wrong; I'm not thinking about 70-point Samsonov. He only posted what, 40-something last year? But Samsonov would definitely add depth scoring to the Wings, and speed. Right now all of the Wings' scoring forwards are above average to average in terms of skating speed. The only fast skaters on the team are the checking liners. Except for Cleary, who right now belongs on a checking line because he isn't producing jack squat offensively. Sign Samsonov to a cheap deal (no more than $1m-$1.5m) and do something like one of these: Samsonov/Datsyuk/Holmstrom Hudler/Zetterberg/Franzen Cleary/Filppula/Eaves Abdelkader/Helm/Bertuzzi Hudler/Datsyuk/Bertuzzi Samsonov/Zetterberg/Franzen Filppula/Helm/Cleary Holmstrom/Abdelkader/Eaves Worst case scenario is that he doesn't produce enough to justify being on the roster. The Wings have more than enough defensive/PK forwards to justify trading or waiving Drew Miller if necessary. The fact that this lineup still includes Dats, Z, Helm, Flip, Cleary, Abs, and Eaves makes that fact plainly obvious. Not to mention Emmerton and Mursak as the spares.
-
Why are people so nuts about putting Brunnstrom on Datsyuk's wing or Zetterberg's wing? Cory Emmerton outperformed him offensively in the AHL last year while spending some time injured and some time on the Detroit roster. Brunnstrom failed to make it onto the Leafs roster. Should Emmerton be slotted next to Dats or Z? Maybe Helm, who posted 30+ points in the NHL last year. I've been torn a new one for suggesting Eaves on Dats' wing before, even though Eaves has a very good shot and has scored 20 goals. Or Hudler. Who has scored 26 goals and 57 points. And is probably the third most naturally skilled forward on the team right now. Brunnstrom has some decent skills. But he needs to prove he deserves a shot before he gets that slot. Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filppula, Franzen, Hudler, Cleary, Bertuzzi, Holmstrom, and Eaves are all guys who are have shown to be better offensively than he is, at least so far. He needs to seriously up his game, or revise his role. People were suggesting a Homer-type role for him. If he can add that to his repertoire, he'll be a top-sixer on an NHL team for years to come. The Wings are probably losing Homer AND Bert this offseason, so that's definitely an open spot he could slip into. Maybe then he'd deserve the spot on Datsyuk's wing.
-
It will likely be Smith to serve out his suspension. After that, Brunnstrom probably gets called back up he would be exempt from re-entry as he would not have played 10 NHL games or spent 30 days on an NHL roster since clearing. Brunnstrom is exempt from re-entry at any point this season due to this rule, assuming he stays in Grand Rapids.
-
This is close, except I would switch Abdelkader and Eaves to get the Cleary/Helm/Eaves line out there. Also, take Miller out for Bertuzzi. Z/Dats/Homer Huds/Flip/Mule Cleary/Helm/Eaves Abby/Emmy/Bertuzzi This leaves Miller and Mursak. Assuming you rotate them in for Eaves, Homer, and Emmerton, then the following options are available: Eaves out: Mursak slots directly for Eaves; Miller takes Abs' spot, one of Abs or Emmerton takes Eaves' spot. Homer out: Bert to first line, Miller/Mursak in his place. Emmerton out: Abs to center, Miller/Mursak on wing.
-
Why would Emmerton be next, and who's replacing him? Why not Miller or Eaves? Eaves has sat in the press box for four games, Miller for two, and Emmerton for two. Emmerton is four years younger than the others, and all of them are capable PKers. Emmerton is the only center of the three. *your Couldn't. It's "I couldn't care less" because "I could care less" means that you do care. Which is the complete opposite of what you are saying. Proper spelling and grammar are our friends. You should become acquainted with them if you desire to be taken seriously. Trade for Doan and Parise? And what are we giving up, Hudler/Kindl/1st to New Jersey and to Phoenix at the same time? NO! Oh. I like the Sergei Samsonov idea. I've liked the idea of Sergei Samsonov for years. But Ken Holland doesn't. Sergei Samsonov contacted the Wings about trying out, and the Wings said no thanks. Ya dig, Inglewood Jack?

Maybe he'll get injured during the next game, using his UFC training. Or maybe he'll injure someone else...

Bettman said he wanted to put hockey back in Winnipeg, and said that if the Coyotes were to move, it would be to Winnipeg if they didn't already have a new team. The Thrashers are now the *new* Winnipeg Jets.
-
So you leave in Cleary, who has yet to have a good game, but scratch Hudler, who has been one of the team's better forwards? Also, your fourth line isn't just leftovers; it's actually an effective checking line with three solid defensive forwards.
