TSN: Red Wings interested in Bertuzzi

haha, nope. s'different, though. very different. you see it's different because HEY LOOK A FIRE ENGINE!! *runs off* yeah, I'm probably a bit hypocritical that way, and I don't care. Clod did what he did TO a Red Wing. Hey, I'm sorry a cameraman got assaulted, but, y'know, he wasn't a Detroit Tiger cameraman, right? Bertuzzi smacked an Av, and you know we were all feeling just a little bit of vengeful satisfaction watching the Av fans howl and moan about that one. so yeah, my high and mighty second chance talk doesn't really apply if a Detroiter was the victim.

Is there a better way to sort teams in the NHL standings?

Bingo. It's painful. You ignoring the part where I explained to you that there are several different ways to calculate the winning percentages with ties, and then explaining to me as if I were a two-year old the "correct" way to do it makes this a very painful discussion. For example, you can do it the way you patronizingly explained to me. Or you can throw ties out altogether and count only wins and losses. Or you can do it the easy way, which is to assign point values. Which is why the NHL went to the point system. There. Your question is answered. Any more speaking in this thread from you, other than a "thank you very much for answering my question," is nothing more than an exercise to try and prove to the world you are smarter than the rest of us. Which I figure was probably the entire point in starting the thread in the first place, but whatever; your question is answered.

Is there a better way to sort teams in the NHL standings?

Kind of a pointless way to put things because baseball teams never have more than a day off between games, except for the All-Star break. So there will never be more than about a two-game difference in games played. But this is pretty simple. The NHL uses points instead of percentages because ties used to be common, and percentages are too wacky (and can actually be calculated different ways to come up with different numbers) when large numbers of ties are involved.

Either you choose to, or you don't. I don't.

Ditto. I'm in favor of getting Bertuzzi, if it happens, not because I don't mind him smacking someone upside the head with the business end of the stick, but because I don't think he will. If he does, screw him - thanks for tarnishing the Wings' image, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. But if he's healthy and brings his train-wreck style of play to the playoffs for us, it can only help. I think it's about 100% consensus that we could use a bruiser that can score. So could the whole league. Demand is high for that type of player, and I'd probably pick someone else besides Bertuzzi if I could - mainly due to the health issues. But beggars can't be choosers. I'm for giving the guy a second chance like we have in the past with other Detroit pickups, and I think the ingredients are there to make it work. Being traded to Florida has got to have been like purgatory for Bertuzzi - if he's truly got the desire to win, being traded to a contender will surely reinvigorate him.

Less ethically inclined than OJ? I didn't realize the Skating Osamas was a hockey team. sibiriak is right on. You seem to be completely unable to tell the difference between the everyday legal violence that causes the opponent to cough up the puck and the uncalled-for violence that causes the authorities to get involved. "We're opposed to the possibility of violence by the members of our squad"?? I think your avatar is appropriate. It's like "evil Wings". Black instead of white.

Gary Bettman doesn't intend to step down

Nobody seriously expects Bettman to give up the cushy-ass job he's got, do they? Anybody who thinks it might happen is wishing on gumdrop rainbows. Bettman won't leave til he's told to.

If "Cup at any cost" is how you view it, that's a damn shame, frankly. It's perfectly possible to play a clean game and still bash the opposition up and down the ice. That's hockey. Don't equate "clean and classy" with "skilled but soft". Calgary didn't beat us by having someone like Marchment use his knee as a weapon. I want Bertuzzi. I think he's worth a second chance. If he blows that second chance by using his stick as an assault weapon again, I'll try and forget he was ever a Wing. What good is a Cup if we get it because we made it to Game One of the Finals against the Sabres and Bertuzzi takes the opportunity to slash the back of Daniel Briere's knee or take a blatant run at a defenseless Ryan Miller?

    USA - Mexico

I hate the Mexico soccer team. I didn't realize we had a friendly against them - if I did, I'd have paid more attention. Their fans are some of the worst in the whole world, and I was thrilled to see them lose in the first round of elimination at the World Cup.

Because there's other reasons for being a fan and being proud of the Wings besides just championships. We'd like to think we have a clean and classy team. No Clod, Marchment, Avery (who I don't think anyone misses too badly), no dirty types. I'd like for the Winged Wheel not to be thought of as a thug symbol around the league. That said, I'm still in favor of a Bertuzzi trade if he proves he can stay healthy and contribute. As I said in the first page of this thread, Detroit is a great place for athletes to rebuild a reputation. I think Bertuzzi in the Winged Wheel can follow in the footsteps of guys like Sheed and Kenny Rogers, who had a checkered past but proved to the fans that they were unselfish and would compete hard.

    NCAA Basketball Season

Yeowch. Since when did Pur_ue start playing defense? How the mighty have fallen this season..... Atlantic Coast Boston Coll. 8-2 17-6 Virginia 8-2 16-6 North Carolina (5) 7-2 21-3 Virginia Tech 6-3 16-7 Clemson 5-5 19-5 Duke (16) 5-5 18-6 Florida St. 5-5 17-7 Georgia Tech 4-6 15-8 Maryland 3-6 17-7 N.C. A sixth defenseman won't be anywhere near enough for Florida to make that deal.

TSN: Red Wings interested in Bertuzzi

I probably would have agreed with you at one point. But one thing I'm proud of as a Detroit fan in general is that athletes with a history can come to Detroit and get a second chance. Rasheed Wallace and Kenny Rogers, etc. Guys have rebuilt their reputations in Detroit because the fans have told them, "Hey, we don't care about what happened in the past. Be a team player and play your hardest, and all that stuff is forgotten." It's something I definitely buy into. Why not see if the same can happen with Bertuzzi?

Every Wings fan older than 10 years old wants a big gritty tough winger with a scoring touch. Those players aren't exactly a dime a dozen, so I am not gonna say, "I want a big gritty tough winger with a scoring touch, but a different big gritty tough winger with a scoring touch."

    NCAA Basketball Season

Watching some Duke-UNC......Dickie V just listed his top three players in the ACC, in order: Sean Singletary, Jared Dudley, Al Thornton. Tyler Hansbrough fourth. :D again edit: More bragging: Vitale and his broadcast partner (for the life of me, I can't remember who it is) said Singletary and J.R. Reynolds are "the best backcourt in the ACC, maybe in the country."

I wish I'd stopped there once. It was on my way to school so I must have driven past it 15 times, and always meant to stop, and always said to myself, naw, next time, I feel like getting home/back quick this time. I've got nothing against the state itself. Cumberland is cool, even though the highway through it is death incarnate. Baltimore's neat, I've been to Camden Yards and loved it. Annapolis is neat. I just can't stand the Terps, or especially their fans. When the president of the university himself declares that out-of-state Virginia students "just don't know any better" than to go to UVA, I take that kind of personal.
  18. Few if any. Doesn't that make them obvious enough? At the time they retired, nobody at all was having their jerseys hung up.

    Super Bowl XLI

Without turning this into something that needs to be moved to PD.....I didn't hear what Rush said about Grossman, so I dunno. But the McNabb comments were dead on. Sorry, but they were. All Rush said is that McNabb gets more attention because he's black. How is that not a true statement? The hypocrite media destroyed Rush for that, ("no, nobody gets more attention just because they're black, McNabb gets recognition for his talent, we're in a day and age where race is irrelevant to how the players play, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.!!!") Then Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith went to the Super Bowl. So much for people not getting attention just because of their race

    Sedin Twins

The Sedins have definitely become the 1-2 punch the Canucks expected when they drafted them. Henrik doesn't even have 10 goals this season but he's an absolute assist machine.

    NCAA Basketball Season

I actually like Duke. Comes from upbringing, my family was always pulling for Duke in the tournament. Plus you can't not have huge respect for Coach K. But it's still extra-fun beating them and even more fun ragging on them when they visit. Maryland, on the other hand, I dislike everything about that program, fans and all. So anyway.....Virginia 69, Maryland 65 This means......ALONE IN FIRST IN THE ACC! :carrot:  :carrot: I realize there's six games left in the season (seven including the nonconference game against Longwood), not to mention two against the very talented (and very despised) Virginia Tech.....then the ACC tournament....then, if we don't completely fold, the Big Dance.....so we still have a lot to accomplish. And of course, Boston College has a game tomorrow against Miami, so we're likely gonna have to share again tomorrow night. But DAMN. Even if only for a day, being the king of the king of conferences is something special. Even more so if you're not named UNC or Duke.

Meh....Michigan basketball is so......boring. I follow them, and root for them, but frankly there's just nothing to get excited about. They lose all the games they should lose and a few they shouldn't, and it all adds up to nothing much. AHEM....now Virginia basketball on the other hand.....have I mentioned it much lately? past couple days....hours....or so? As I post, we're up 10 at the half on HATED rival Maryland.....at Maryland where we haven't won since, I dunno, Ralph Sampson or whenever. Been a while, so I really want this one.

    TV Ratings

Somewhere along the line, there's got to be a typo. I refuse to believe that rating number. I think Reda got fed some bum info. Maybe a 1 rating, which represents 1 percent of homes, got turned into the decimal representation of 1 percent: .01. That would mean 74,000 instead of 740. Much more likely.
