every girlfriend I've ever had has been a summer kind of thing....so I've always been single on Valentine's Day. stupid holiday anyway, either you don't care in the slightest, or you're expected to produce expensive stuff. and you don't even get a day off. WTF kind of holiday do you not get a day off? three-day weekend kind of thing would be nice.

Wednesday will be a great day! The four most beautiful words in the English language: "Pitchers and catchers report." Almost time for a brand new baseball season!

Guess you would have hated me and my class schedule my last year at UVA. Class on Tuesday and Thursday only. Basically a six-day weekend, since there were only two classes on Thursday. well you really are a *****, aren't you 41 minutes until freedom!! if it makes you feel better, at least you can count down the minutes til freedom. i'm here all night. ***** oooh I AM a *****.. I'm outta here in LIDSTROM minutes sucka when my head explodes from boredom, somebody do me a favor and put up a sign or something so people don't accidentally step on my nose.

Lehman had a 100+ tackle rookie season. Bailey, yeah, he could stand to stop getting hurt, but when healthy, he's a crucial part of that front 7. and you know, the secondary is not all that horrible either. obviously Bly is huge. Fernando Bryant doesn't totally suck. Kenoy Kennedy is good too. Defense isn't a major concern.

And the commish has a decision to make. He has to put a player on the team to replace the injured Jermaine O'Neal. David Stern is a master of generating publicity. Tayshaun Prince probably doesn't deserve to go over Michael Redd, but Stern knows publicity, and it would generate metric sh#t-tons of publicity if Tayshaun were to go and make it the Pistons vs. Best of the West.

The nice thing about Michigan is that there is never a game on their schedule where you figure they have no shot. They're Michigan - always a threat to run the table.

This is the Lions we are talking about. Don't everyone forget that. We do this (talk about how good they will be) every damn year before the season and it explodes in our faces. I have no delusions of grandeur just because there's a new coaching staff in place. Then again, I'm not going to ignore the obvious talent that's there in some places, either. I stand by what I said - it's ridiculous to belittle the linebackers, that is the absolute least of the Lions' worries.
-
Wow, you're pessimistic. Then again, I haven't exactly read that the media is jumping on the Lions bandwagon.....where'd you hear that? Anyway, we have half an offensive line, which is better than none, and what's that about the linebackers, you can't be serious??? By the end of the season, when Bailey, Lehman, Holmes, and Davis were all down, sure, but those top four are probably in the top five or seven groups of linebackers in the league. If there's one big strength on the Lions, it's the front seven.

Ford Field is brilliant. First off, the suites are all stacked up on one side instead of in between the lower and upper decks. That means much, much better views from the cheap seats. ("Cheap" being relative.) Second, as you may have read, they incorporated an existing building into the design. They tore down about a third of the Hudson's warehouse, built in the 1920's, and attached the stadium to the rest. The team's offices are now there in the old warehouse, as well as concession stands and stores for the stadium. There was even talk of putting a hotel in the warehouse, but I think that fizzled. The brick and windows on the warehouse were replaced, and the exterior of the new part of the building was designed to match the warehouse. They did this so well that from certain angles you can't tell where the old building ends and the new one begins. The main atrium is gorgeous. There's so much brick used, inside and out, that you really get a very urban feel, and unlike a lot of stadiums they've built, you can't mistake Ford Field for any other stadium or any other city.

There's Kevin Jones and the Williams boys. Talent, if not established talent, but it's there to work with. The Lions' cupboard isn't bare. But I still want Matt Schaub.

It is. Martz has actually signed this time. Link. The terms are officially undisclosed but thought to be $4 million for 3 years. Martz has all the reputation of an offensive genius, but sometime during the Thanksgiving game against Atlanta, the hopeless optimist Lions fan in me disappeared and was replaced with the jaded cynic Lions fan. So I'm going with wait-and-see. Martz turned Marc Bulger and Ryan Fitzpatrick into offensive superstars, and I do think the Lions have a better defense than the Rams. The question on everybody's mind now will be: What does Martz thing of Joey Harrington?

I emailed Sunaya Supurji (butchered, that) about McGrath- she does OHL stuff for a Toronto paper and for HockeyBUzz.com, and she said almost exactly the same thing. Because he's kind of a small fry, there is concern that he won't be able to hang with the big boys in the years ahead. Given his OHL performance, I'd say at least give the kid a shot in GR. He's obviously got the skills and some GR time would give him a chance to prove himself physically and mentally. Hopefully he pans out- it'd be nice to see the Wings develop a scoring threat out of the Canadian leagues for a change. He's 6'0", 192 (well, he's listed at that, anyway), kind of unfair to label him a small fry, isn't it? Sounds about average. And he only just turned 20, so he's still got time to hit the weight room. I would expect him to sign a contract and be in Grand Rapids next season, or at the absolute latest, 07-08. Two years there would be plenty of seasoning time and he could see some time with the Wings by 2009 or 2010. Sounds about right. If we're lucky he puts himself on the fast track....

Yeah, they were just kinda going through the motions there. It's February, not exactly the most exciting time of the year for the daily grind of meaningless games. Win's a win, though.
-
yeah, Martz backed out....pity....he would have fit in perfectly too, in the fine tradition of M&M&M&M&M&M&M........

Martz has been hired as the offensive coordinator. Donnie Henderson, formerly of the Jets, will be the defensive coordinator. No doubt the rest of the staff will now fall quickly together. Wisely, Marinelli retained special teams coach Chuck Priefer. Special teams have been a huge strength for the Lions ever since Priefer got here. Priefer's coached under every Lions coach since Bobby Ross (since 1997) and it really says something about his talents that he has been now retained by three head-coaching hires (M, M, and M.)
