1/24 GDT: Nashville Predators at Red Wings

At this point I'm pulling for the shootout. Missed the one against Columbus, so I haven't seen a Wings' shootout all season. This game needs to end in one because it's been pretty blah otherwise.

same here. of course, he also let a Predator walk right in on Manny, take a pass and get a great scoring chance. but overall a solid game.

    Super Bowl XL

We're winning these games on the golden arm of Ben Roethlisberger. Our running game has been bottled up by 8 man fronts and blitzing safeties the past 2 weeks. I sure hope Seattle plays the same as Denver and Indy did. Don't underestimate your running game. Bettis has been totally unstoppable in short-yardage situations. As the Bengals, Colts, and Broncos all found out, third-and-short or first-and-goal has been lights out. That's a huge advantage. If Seattle plays to stop the pass, we will pulverize them up front with Fast Willie and Jerome. Teams stack the line v the run because we couldnt win games with Tommy Maddox at QB. He made too many mistakes. Now that we have a legit QB, teams are getting burned stacking the line. Pick your poison. We'll beat you on the ground.....and in the air. I think Seattle is in a world of s**t. We've allowed 1 100 yard rusher over 32 games including the playoffs. Teams dont run the ball on us at all. We shut the run down and force them to beat us with the pass. This Steeler secondary isnt the same secondary that got burned all over the field just a season ago. We're revamped and we've got the wildest bad ass in the NFL running rampant in our secondary. 13 days and ticking. Time can't go any slower for us. I'm well beyond the 24 hour celebration rule. I want to see Coach Cowher hand the VL trophy over to Mr. Rooney. One For The Thumb! No, the Lions and Saints are in a world of s##t. Hard to be in the Super Bowl and be in a world of s##t. And don't underestimate Seattle. Do you know how many penalties the left side of their O-line was called for, in 18 games? Three. They are good. You've got the league MVP running behind the best offensive line in the game. Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson....these guys are more than a match for any defensive line. And their passing game is solid....taking away Shaun Alexander (no guarantee, that) doesn't guarantee victory. And frankly, "one for the thumb" is a great reason for me to root against the Steelers.

    Super Bowl XL

"And this year's Super Bowl matchup features the Seattle Seahawks vs......wait...who....the Seahawks??" Cool. I like the Steelers. I like the Bus. I like the city of Pittsburgh. I like the Steelers unis, they're classic. I like that the Steelers feature two Wahoos and two Wolverines. I like Hines Ward. I like Bill Cowher. I like pretty much everything about the Pittsburgh Steelers. But Pittsburgh has had their Super Bowl glory. It's someone else's turn. Go Seahawks. I won't be too broken up if they lose, though. And frankly, this is a lot better than last year's matchup, where I could think of no reason I wanted either team to win and plenty why I wished they could both lose. This year....unless you're a fan of either team, how do you root real hard against the Bus going out on a winning note in his hometown, and how do you root real hard against a team that has been mired in mediocrity forever, finally getting their shot at all the marbles?

    NFL Playoffs

Smart has a whopping 67 yards of rushing in a five-year NFL career and Maddox is the third-stringer. If they get around to playing up that story, they're really hard up. Side note: I looked up Rod Smart and finally realized where Boss's avatar comes from. Busted out laughing. Good stuff!

    NFL Playoffs

Just had to add this: Carrie Underwood's rendition of the anthem was brilliant, thanks to a lack of adding extra notes where they don't belong: "home of the braaaAAAAaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAve." Good for her.

    NFL Playoffs

Forget Carolina. No f###ing way an expansion team goes to the Super Bowl twice while the Lions have never gone. Especially when said Super Bowl is played in Detroit. I'm pulling for the Seahawks all the way. No, I'm not bitter. Yes I am.

    Detroit Pistons Season Thread

During the Pistons' current six-game winning streak, they've won games by an average of 22 points I mean, my God, it doesn't even look like they're even trying out there. I mean that seriously, and not in a derogatory way either. That Knicks game, they just cruised their way to a 30 point lead. They're so good, they get out to a lead and the other team realizes there isn't a damn thing they can do about it, and start resting up. How many times did they work the ball inside only to kick it out to Tayshaun, who would be in his own zip code? He'd catch the ball, check his watch, break out the cell and call his wife, order pizza, do a crossword puzzle, turn to Spike Lee and say "Watch this", line up the 3 and sink it. Granted, the opponents have been along the lines of the Bobcats, Hawks, and Knicks - the dregs of the league. Guess we don't have to worry about a lack of focus And now it's Houston tonight. Looks like they may be without Yao and Stromile Swift. You can't hope to run with the Pistons shorthanded. Win column!

    Sidney Crosby

All of the above were very, very high draft picks with expectations the size of Manitoba. Crosby is no different. Who will he be most like? I say Gretzky (and please don't flame me with your "omg omg how could ne1 touch THE GREAT ONE!?!?!!11") Crosby, as with anyone, will be extremely hard-pressed to approach Gretzky's numbers.....but he'll have a career for the ages, I think, but will eventually wear out his welcome in Pittsburgh. I do think he has potential to be the Pens captain for a very, very long time, and that his so-called immature behavior is simply frustration and not knowing how to show it. But staying with one team for twenty years is frighteningly rare.

    Sidney Crosby

I feel like I should have put, say, Jagr or Messier in that spot instead of Gretzky and this is exactly why. You don't have to put up Gretzky numbers - nobody ever has or will - to be mentioned in the same sentence as Gretzky in the all-time greats. People looked at the Gretzky comparison and instantly made up their minds, "Welp, not that, nobody will ever touch The Great One". I meant for that to be one where Crosby is an all-timer but not always as a Penguin.

    Bowl games in general

OK, I started this thread as an excuse to brag about the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA (GO HOOS GO) which beat Minnesota in the Music City Bowl. Laugh if you will, but next year the tradition-rich Peach Bowl becomes the who-cares Chick-Fil-A Bowl. YECCHH!!! But the rest of the bowl season's been decent, too. With some new teams showing up in bowl games like Akron, Arkansas State, and Rutgers, I think it's interesting. And Akron got robbed in the Motor City Bowl, in my opinion. Too bad Michigan couldn't lock up the Alamo Bowl. Ugh. What a disappointing season. For the rest of bowl season, I'll be pulling for Notre Dame, South Florida (because a friend of mine is absolutely insufferable when NC State wins and I can really give it to him if they lose) and of course, Texas to beat USC.

    Alamo Bowl-Michigan vs Nebraska

I forget who they were, but I remember a few Michigan football players who grew up in Ohio and said what spurred them into going to Michigan was hearing, every day, "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" "So you're going to Ohio State, right?" Whereas Michigan has not only the border rivalry, but the in-state one as well, so if rebelling was your motivation, it would only depend on which side you wanted to piss off more.

    Alamo Bowl-Michigan vs Nebraska

And if he started a new thread you'd be saying "did you really have to start a whole new thread for this?" in any case, I have very little experience with OSU fans. Lucky me. Mostly my experience is with MSU fans who think Michigan and MSU were founded for the sole purpose of playing basketball, but only after 1989. But don't be jealous cause Michigan attracts fans and MSU doesn't I suspect there are more than quite a few out there like me, who grew up a diehard fan and for one reason or another, chose another school to go to. "you didn't even go to school there" is something I've heard a couple times. No, but I've never played for the Wings either, but there you go.

I miss Michigan drivers. At least in Detroit, you pretty much know: that guy is probably gonna cut you off. Make up for it by pulling a triple-lane change in front of a semi so as not to miss your exit. Norfolk on the other hand has the most passive-aggressive bastards I've ever seen. On the drive home today: I'm behind a sloowwwwwwwww Coke delivery truck and a minivan. I pull to the next lane to pass the pair. Minivan, after having driven behind the Coke truck for a couple minutes already, decides me passing is unacceptable and cuts me off to also pass the Coke truck. Minivan passes Coke truck, and then, with no car in front of her, slows down and stays just enough in front of the Coke truck so that I can't get in front of the truck and then go around the minivan.

    Detroit Lions

We've got LB's. Keep them healthy and it's a terrific, athletic unit. Earl Holmes is a good run stuffer and Bailey and Lehman can run all over the field to make plays. It'd be great to have a defensive end to put opposite James Hall....two bookends to match the beef in the middle, and that's why I'd love Kiwanuka or Hali. Bryant is a decent CB, but Williams would probably be an improvement. But in the end, the Lions could do much worse than to take seven offensive linemen, starting with D'Brick. That more than anything is a horrific weak spot.
