    It's Marinelli

meh....I'd never heard of him til a couple days ago. I mean, it's nice we don't have a "retread" but then, Mornhinweg wasn't a retread either. Hopefully he's all the taskmaster he's made out to be and then some. I just hope he wasn't hired only because Grimm (the apparent top choice) wasn't available. Then again....if that's the case, it might be best if Millen's top choice wasn't available. This is unfair to the new guy, but is it too soon to start the Fire Marinelli bandwagon, or do we have to wait til the Lions actually commence embarassing themselves on the field of play? I mean, just as a pre-emptive kind of thing so we don't have to remember later, y'know?

While I agree with a lot of your points, I have to disagree about a few things. We shouldn't trade down on the draft this year. With the #9 pick in the NFL draft, the lions should select CB Jimmy Williams from Va. Tech. Dre Bly is the only defensive back that is any good. While it was stupid for him to point the fingers, dre bly is a helluva cornerback and should be on the pro bowl roster this year. He would have been there if it wasnt for his injuries this year. As far as Jay Cutler, ummmmm...NO!! I think we should sign free agent billy volek to a one year deal and if it doesnt pan out, then draft a quarterback in the 2007 draft. Cutler is a quality QB, but in my mind he's one you pick up in the 2nd or 3rd round. Williams is a fine player, and on the field, one of just a few players that make sense for the Lions given their needs (the others are D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Tamba Hali, or Mathias Kiwanuka) but Williams is a jackass. I think for the QB situation, we need to trade for a QB. Draft one this year with a 2nd or 3rd round pick (Cutler, Brett Basanez, Charlie Whitehurst) and develop them and let them compete with Orlovsky. Meantime we need to be trading for Matt Schaub, who hopefully would make the drafted QB expendable. Or, say, Chris Simms, Volek, or Jon Kitna, to louse up the job until our project QB is ready. What I don't want to happen, this year next year or any time in the near future, is to draft another "franchise QB" and watch him sink like a rock just like every franchise QB we've ever picked up. I'm tired of drafting the heir apparent to the QB throne. Hell, maybe just pick one up each year in the sixth round....one of them has got to be Tom Brady eventually.

You know it's going to be Marinelli. For a couple reasons: - Russ Grimm is still not available. - Haslett is the Bills top choice. - Morninhweg, Mariucci, Marinelli.

I saw a Detroit Lions car flag in the parking lot at the Krogers today This is a rare sighting in the Motor City itself, but here in Norfolk, VA, it's just below "Rhinoceros sauntering down Granby Street" on the list of things I'm likely to see in this town. I had to leave a note on the windshield - had to. It read: "Love the flag! Keep the faith! - Another suffering fan." But I couldn't help myself.....I added a PS: "FIRE MILLEN!"

weird.... since I have to wait til Wednesday to see the Wings again I've decided to put the '96 Wings-Blues Game 7 on (you know the game ) while I'm tooling around the apartment. what's weird is: it's only the first period, so I know what's going to happen - i.e., nobody's putting the biscuit in the basket any time soon. but I still drop what I'm doing to peek at the TV when the announcers raise their voice and get excited. it's not like Primeau is going to pot that first-period power-play chance, but y'know.....what if? I'm only just now thinking about the star power going on in this game. Wayne Gretzky, Al MacInnis and Brett Hull.....Steve Yzerman, Paul Coffey, Sergei Fedorov and Nick Lidstrom.....along with Larionov and Fetisov, that's 9 guys whose ticket to the Hall of Fame was punched long before they hang/hung up the skates.

Pet peeve: When you're in the left turn lane, the car in front of you has moved into the lane and come to a complete stop at the light, waits a few seconds.......and then puts on the left turn signal. Thanks, I wasn't able to figure that out from the other visual clues. Glad I had some warning. Gravy: when they cut you off to get into the lane in the first place - and wait til the light turns green and begin their turn before using the signal.

tell ya what I love about this year's Super Bowl....so many headlines about teams wanting to get to Detroit, who will and won't make it to Detroit, the players saying they want to get to Detroit.....that just doesn't happen very often and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

    Tigers offseason thread

I think the pitching is less of a worry than the bats. The offense has trouble staying healthy (Mags, Guillen, Pudge) and is at risk of being inconsistent. If healthy and playing to full potential, that lineup can bash with anyone in the division. If Matt Mantei proves healthy, there's your middle reliever. Love that signing. The bullpen is solid - Todd Jones can surely still close, Jamie Walker is still around, Mantei if healthy is a great pickup, Spurling is solid, and between German and Rodney, one of them should be able to learn consistency. We know about what we'll get out of the rotation - it will not dominate but it should keep us around as long as they get run support.

No worries. The high pick hasn't helped all that much in recent years anyway. If Paul Edinger had missed that last-second field goal in 2000, we wouldn't be in this pickle to begin with.

    Cleveland Barons moving to Worcester

http://www.theahl.com/AHL/News/2006/01/09/1386129.html I brought this up not because it's particularly newsworthy - the AHL, as with many minor leagues, is usually in flux, with teams frequently changing identities, logos, colors, and cities, as their affiliates change. It's the nature of the beast. Which brings me to my point - does anyone else think it's a shame that AHL teams sometimes take on nearly the exact identity of their NHL affiliates? The Providence Bruins are an example. The Worcester Sharks will be another one, joining the Iowa Stars and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Other teams more subtly change their colors to match - the Norfolk Admirals, for example, were once blue and gold, a natural given the naval namesake and enormous Naval presence in the city. Now they wear Chicago Blackhawk uniforms with a new Admirals logo. This is why I'm glad we have the Griffs. Other than adding red to their unis to represent the Wings, they more or less have kept their identity.

    2006 UM schedule

road games at Notre Dame, Penn State and Ohio State are all going to be the toughest challenges of the year. Ohio State will be tough as always, so will Notre Dame, but Penn State has many, many holes to fill....over half their lineup this year was seniors. They'll drop off. I think Iowa and Wisconsin will have better teams than Penn State, but Michigan gets them in the Big House.

I hate Three Days Grace. What kind of twisted individual must you be to have two of your biggest hits go "I hate everything about you" and "I could be fake, I could be stupid, I could be just like you"? Terrible music, just terrible.
