    Bowl games in general

And you'd be equally foolish not to see how Texas had equally many blown opportunities early in the game. The fumbled punt; another fumble on a crucial second down play deep in USC territory which left them 3rd and 24; a decision on their part to go for it on 4th down and miss. After watching that game, I'm absolutely conVinced (ha ha ) it doesn't matter what team drafts him or what scheme he's in - Vince Young has got to be one of the all-time greats. The Heisman went to the wrong person this year. Reggie Bush is supremely talented (as evidenced by that run and dive for a touchdown) and no doubt Young is surrounded by an NFL-caliber offense. But on that final drive, when 94,000 people are keyed in on one person, and half those 94,000 are undoubtedly filled with this huge sense of dread and impending doom...... When Texas faced 4th-and-5 just outside the end zone, there couldn't have been a soul watching who didn't think "If Texas scores, it will be Vince and Vince alone, running it in - and if Vince takes off, he WILL score." Vince Young has IT. GREATNESS. Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, John Elway, Brett Favre, Vince Young.

i am looking forward to seeing notre dame against ohio state. I think you're going to learn a lot about both teams in that game. winner should be a top 5 team next year. Sorry, but USC is going to knock texas all around the rose bowl. USC is going to win by 20 plus. The trojans might as well play new england in the super bowl....ha ha...i wish. It would be a helluva game. eh? WOW!! What a game! The Grandaddy Of Them All comes through with an amazing game yet again! The BCS really shone this year. Brilliant matchups and brilliant games. The Orange Bowl was best for sheer suspense and gutty performances, but the Rose Bowl was for all the marbles, it was the matchup everyone was waiting for and lived up to ALL the hype. Well, except for that bit where everyone wanted to prematurely crown USC the Greatest Team Ever. Hook 'Em Horns! Congrats to UT! Vince Young absolutely stole the show.

You know, I could have sworn I heard that quote differently. IMDb has it that way too. But I thought for sure that they said "She's upset" and the Professor sarcastically replied, "Hence the weeping." That's how I remember it. Because that whole conversation had the air of the Professor feeling as though he was stating the blindingly obvious to Peter and Susan. Oh yeah, you're right, that is what she said. I took that from IMDb and didn't realize it was wrong. Still a great quote though. Someone should set them straight. I'm glad my memory isn't going after all.

    Detroit Lions

Couple links: Coaches Millen speaks! Looks like the "official candidates list" includes Maurice Carthon, Al Saunders, Mike Singletary, Jim Haslett, and Dick Jauron. Carthon, according to the Yahoo article, is interviewing today, and Saunders and Haslett will interview this weekend. Singletary has been contacted, and Jauron remains a candidate thanks to his incumbency. Other names are mentioned but only as speculation, nothing concrete. So far so good, I say. They are only going after one retread, Haslett, and Haslett is a good coach that has had nothing but rotten Saints teams to deal with. I think he did a decent job in New Orleans, all things considered. Glad they aren't bothering with flashy names like Martz, Sherman, etc. It's nice to finally hear the Lions make some public statements. Millen and the rest of the brass have been mousy-quiet since Mooch was fired.

    Bowl games in general

You're right, I didn't see the game. Was busy driving home. But I'm a Michigan fan and I still say, if you lose your bowl game under whatever circumstances, you have bigger things to worry about than if you should have gone to a better one. It just sounds like huge sour grapes to complain about it. Michigan had its worst season since 1984. That was so long ago, the Tigers were actually good. They lost their bowl game, they lost to Ohio State, and they lost the Little Brown Jug. By Michigan standards it was a crummy season. They got bigger fish to fry than whether they should have been in the Outback Bowl or not. It's not like it's the BCS. It's not like it's even one step below the BCS in the Citrus Bowl (side note: f*** Capital One). It's the Outback Bowl. Better to spend the energy complaining about the defense that couldn't make a crucial stop all season. Sorry, I don't like seeing Michigan have to burn two timeouts to get reviews on plays that should have been reviewed anyway, especially when one call is reversed and the other SHOULD have been. Or BLATANT pass interference penalties that are not called, and as a result of this Michigan gives up the ball instead of getting a first down inside the Nebraska 5. Or even worse, when a penalty is NOT called on the final play of the game, when Nebraska's entire team mobbed the field DURING play while MICHIGAN had the ball, and had they not rushed the field Manningham would have had a clear path down the field. As it stood, Michigan made it to the 13 yard line and would have had another down from inside the ten had a penalty been called, as the game cannot end on a defensive penalty. They gave at least one of the timeouts back. I'm sure they gave back the timeout on the replay that was a reversed Nebraska touchdown. And both schools had men from the sidelines on the field during the final play. If they had followed the letter of the law there, they would have been offsetting penalties. It's the Alamo Bowl, man. One of many sloshing around in Bowl Soup before New Year's. Of more concern to me is why did the 67th best offense in the nation (84th in yardage) put up 32 points on Michigan's defense? Just another loss to a mediocre team. Chalk it up to a lost season and put that one behind us. PS: The Sugar Bowl, despite the furious comeback by Georgia, had absolutely nothing on the Orange Bowl. Triple OT, suspense galore thanks to the missed kicks, an amazing defensive battle, two teams absolutely playing with everything they've got, the two best coaches ever prowling the sidelines furiously, and bonus: Florida State loses. What more could you ask for in a game? How about a phenomenal display of athleticism on the longest punt return in Orange Bowl history and a last-second-of-the-half fantastic TD catch by a fifth-year senior walk-on who never played high school ball? How about an atmosphere in the stands that was positively electric even before the game and didn't slow down for the whole game? The West Virginia-Georgia game was fun but it will soon be forgotten. That Orange Bowl was a timeless classic.

By the way, that Orange Bowl was phenomenal. You rarely get to see a game like that where both sides just play their hearts and guts out. I despise Florida State but I'll give them this, they really played a hell of a game from the very start to very finish. Good thing Penn State just had a little more in them (and a slightly better kicker).

ah, but Rhode Island is a real island....within the state of Rhode Island of course....and it's even got roads. and to be totally accurate, the full name of the state is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations". so the rest of the state is, you know, the Providence Plantations. are there plantations any more? no, but there used to be, and Providence still exists. any more fun and interesting discussion brain-twisters for me to ruin with stupid facts

"Narnia's not going to run out of toast, Ed." "Come on Peter, gastrovascular" "Is it Latin?" "Yes" "Is it Latin for 'The Worst Game Ever Invented?'" I think Edmund should have won the game for that guess.

Chronicles of Narnia was a great damn movie. So great, that when the Christmas decorations* *<---- come down and the Christmas quote is put away until next year, I'm going to replace it with a Narnia quote. I'm leaning toward this one: "He says we should follow him." "He's a beaver! He shouldn't be saying anything!" Any better ideas?

I hate being in the position to defend OSU, but he was definitely juggling that ball. No catch.

    Thompson basically just fired FAVRE!

Firing Sherman was a good thing for the Lions - I don't think the Packers will be able to bring in someone better. Sherman had little talent to work with this season. Now the Vikings' firing of Mike Tice, that worries me. Tice was holding the Vikings back. Not a good coach. Too bad the Vikes finally got smart.

Made a mistake in my math in a previous post: The Lions will have the 9th pick in the draft instead of the 10th. Will D'Brickashaw Ferguson slip that far? Fingers crossed......

Rumor? Wings trying to aquire Roloson

That's clear. What isn't clear is why Roloson would be any better? His stats are largely a product of the Wild's system. Would anybody here - anyone at all - think Legace for Roloson or Osgood for Roloson is an upgrade? My guess is it's probably just a case of the Wings covering all bases. Probably not looking into it, but looking into looking into it, if that's clear.

    Thompson basically just fired FAVRE!

I suppose you think Yzerman should retire too! Since you're a Lions fans, you probably haven't paid as much attention to the Packers and Favre as I have. Here's the deal, Favre looks a lot like he did when he was young. This season he threw a lot of interceptions, but at the same time 20 touchdowns. When he first played for the Pack, he had the same problem as he did this season. He has NO ONE to throw too. Driver is constantly double covered, since he was the only weapon in our receiving core. When he was able to get free, he and Favre hooked up for over 1,200 yards, just between the two of them. Favre always wants to make things happen. Sometimes that results in interceptions and sometimes it results in TD's. Favre is still argueably the second best quarterback in the league (Manning's got him currently though as he's in his prime, and has a world class team around him); but doesn't that remind you of someone back in the mid 90's? That person is Brett Favre. P.S. I realize this is a largely Lions crowd, but I am in the "Other Sports" category, so I feel its valid. Also, I'm focusing my complaining on Ted Thompson rather than the Packers. I do actually think Yzerman should retire, soon as he finishes this season. What else can he accomplish? What else can Favre accomplish? And if you think Favre is still the second best QB in the league.....yowza. There's a whole host of QBs I'd rather have.

    Bowl games in general

EXACTLY........... YOU CANT HAVE SMALL CONFERENCE OFFICIALS DOING THESE BOWL GAMES!!!! MICHIGAN GOT SCREWED BY IT......AND NOW IOWA'S GOTTEN SCREWED BY IT!!!!! you can't have favorable refs either. You can't have the Michigan-Nebraska game with refs from the Big Ten or Big Twelve....you have to pick neutral coaches. neutral refs you mean But I agree that the Sun Belt Conference shouldn't have been working the Alamo Bowl. The ACC, for example, would have done fine. Sun Belt refs should be working the games between the small conferences - Motor City Bowl, for example (C-USA vs. MAC). And I disagree with the idea that there are too many bowls. It does seem a bit ludicrous, but I love watching teams that you never get to see otherwise, Rutgers and Akron, etc., and it helps to even out the playing field between the little guys and the power schools (which I like even though I'm a Michigan fan).

    Thompson basically just fired FAVRE!

You've got cojones to complain about the Packers to what is largely a pro-Lions audience But since I don't have a foam slice of cheese blocking my vision, I can say that as long as Favre hangs around, the Packers will stink. Let's face it, he's played past his usefulness as a championship QB. He doesn't have the same zip on the ball, but he thinks he still does, hence the interceptions. It's officially over. People watching the Packers used to think "they're behind by 4, but Favre's got the ball in his hands....just wait and Favre will definitely pull this out." Now they wait for Favre to throw that game-ending interception. That's how you know - it's time to move on. Not that I think Rodgers is so hot either. Favre is legendary, but it's time for him to hang them up.
