Also may I remind anyone who cares to make the case for Red Kelly, that Kelly's three best seasons happened wearing blue and white.

I first of all call BS on this. What makes you say so? Second, fine. Raise it up in 30 years then. If and when there comes a time when people say, "wait a minute, Sergei Fedorov was one of the greatest Wings of all time and did this that and everything else, why isn't his number retired?" and there's very little disagreement, then great - do it. Til then it's the wrong idea. Do it today and there's the very real chance of booing at the ceremony. Then nobody would remember Sergei Fedorov as the smooth-skating scoring machine and all-around excellent hockey player that he was - they'd remember he was the guy who got booed at his own ceremony. And even if there isn't, and you still raise the banner, and people watch it rise and think it's bulls***, it's forever bulls*** because that's how people will remember it. If history is kind to his legacy, retire it then. Not when there are so many people who think it's wrong. Again: If there are enough nonbelievers out there that you have to "make the case", the answer is no.

Can you find anyone who thinks #'s 1, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 19 don't belong? Anyone at all? I doubt it. Meantime, can you find anyone who thinks #91 doesn't belong? Oh yes you can. No Wings fan should ever go to the arena and look at any of the banners there and think any of them don't belong. It taints the rest of them.

As I always say when this stuff comes up.... If you have to "make a case" then the answer is NO! And why #4? For the absolute best dogsledder in Wings history?

Should we have traded someone other than Quincey
betterREDthandead replied to jason_0931's topic in General
If nobody would take Quincey in a trade then why would they take Lebda? The obvious answer is that Lebda's a better player.....in which case why the heartache over losing Quincey? -
Well that would make sense then. I still don't like 'em though. The soccer team, I mean. I've been to Italy and absolutely loved it, but that doesn't stop the national team from being the biggest divers and jakers in all of Europe, which is saying something. I guarantee you a huge reason soccer hasn't caught on in America like it has in Europe is because whenever it's on TV (which generally is once every four years) we look and we see all these players get a little bitty kick in the shins and go down screaming for Jesus to save their mortal soul because they're dying right there on the field. Until the stretcher guys come out and/or a foul is called, then they're miraculously OK until the next time they're touched. It turns off a lot of folk.

The Official 2008 Detroit Lions Thread

Yeah, all the way better to 3-13! And 5-11! Wooo! Yes, we need to re-tool everything. Like I said....if I was the new GM, I'd indiscriminately trade anyone I could for draft picks. Only a select few building blocks would remain - guys like Megatron and Sims and maybe say Kevin Smith. In two or three years I'd have churned through the whole team. Might as well treat it like an expansion team. -

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt these days since Millen is no longer doing the talent evaluation. Besides, given what these bums are producing, a draft pick is way more valuable. I'll take the haul. And if we can do more of this in the offseason, so much the better. -

I want to see Stanton. We know what Orlovsky can do. He can run out the back of the end zone. Let's see what Stanton is made of. Personally I wasn't all that impressed by his college career, but I'm biased - maybe he'd do well. Honestly, what do we have to lose? More games? That'll happen anyway. And they are talking about trading Roy Williams to the Cowboys - I hope they do that too. I like Roy a lot, but it's time to start tearing things down. If I were the incoming GM I'd peddle off as many players as I could for draft picks. No need to do any evaluations - the roster is poison because it's used to losing, and anyway most of them are the kind of players that would make quality reserves but lousy starters. Just blow it up as much as possible, with no discrimination, and stockpile draft picks. -
Who'd he run off? Boren? That whiny little daddy's boy? Boren left, I think, for one big reason: RR wouldn't let him go home and snowplow when his ass was supposed to be in the weight room. So he complained about "eroded family values" and took off. The only other transfer was Mallett, who Carr couldn't stand and who didn't like RR's offense and rightfully so, because he has the mobility of an oak tree. He was smart to leave, he wouldn't have succeeded in this offense. RR has in fact adapted his system to the personnel. All it takes is to see the run/pass ratio. Last year with Pat White and no receivers, he ran 70% of the time. This year it's an even split. Asking him to try and coach a Carr-style offense when he has no experience with it is like asking Mallett to run the RR offense. It just wouldn't work. It's WAY too early to start climbing all over RR. We haven't even played a Big Ten rivalry game yet.

I did that a couple times last year. I made all my picks in bold and then reversed them. That didn't work either. My picks were terrible no matter what I did

There are worse things in hockey than playing for a bad team. I have no idea whether the Kings organization is any good or not - never heard anything bad about it - and he should be able to get regular ice time now.

You're absolutely right, but we're talking about, like, the 8th defenseman here. I don't mind the Wings' attitude of "loyal to a fault"....I think it reaps untold benefits in other areas. Prospects don't mind sticking with the Wings even if they could make the back end of a rotation elsewhere, and free agents don't mind signing with the Wings for less money and/or apparent security, because the Wings have that reputation of being loyal to their players. They know they'll be taken care of, and it lets the Wings pick and choose instead of sorting through the scraps. Take Jimmy Howard - you think a goalie in his position in any other organization would be OK with being sent to the AHL yet again? I think he sticks it out because he knows patience will be its own reward with this organization.

Liar Nice job.

No way a normal, healthy person takes an elbow to the chest, even if it was a viciously savage blow (which it sounds like it was not), and it stops his heart. Chris Pronger took a 90-mph slap shot there that one time, and it knocked him down and fluttered his heart some, but he was OK. I hope nobody blames Jagr. Cherepanov is probably just the victim of the same sort of thing Fischer almost was. The real shame is the lack of proper medical attention, despite all the fabulous wealth that's supposedly behind the KHL. I bet it makes guys think twice about heading to Russia for the $$$ now.

Clearly the curse is still in full effect. Only in a Lions uniform would an otherwise reasonably intelligent and modestly talented young quarterback do something stupid like this. Congratulations, Dan Orlovsky - your career is now defined for all eternity. Gus Frerotte will always be the quarterback that sprained his neck bashing his head against the wall on purpose, and Dan Orlovsky will now always be the quarterback that forgot what the back of the end zone is for. Usually "finding new ways to lose" is just a saying. The Lions are living and breathing it. I guess it's what keeps the fans coming back. What'll they try next week? I know....how about a winning field goal called back by a sideline infraction against the coaches, and when they re-kick, they miss. Bet that one's never been tried before. -
I liked the wreck. For one, it moved Robby up about eight places Maybe Smith should have crashed Stewart, then there would have been a 50-50 shot of Robby coming through the pile unscathed and stealing a win Although I've been digging on Tony Stewart ever since he announced his own team (and that they'll be driving Chevys.) And second, there's been way too much happy-happy in the garages lately. Other than Carl and Shrubby tangling at Bristol, what's there been for rivalries and such? A little anger management trouble never hurt NASCAR, did it? Wreck away, boys.

I'm not gonna merge this because it's already a pretty big thread, but in the future please discuss "last night's game" in the Game Day Thread which is there for just that reason. Thanks.

The Atlanta Falc- Thrashers' third jerseys unveiled!
betterREDthandead replied to Cern's topic in General
That doesn't count as a third jersey, it's a retro jersey for a special occasion. Entirely different IMO. What we don't need is some silly quasi-retro look or a black jersey just to be like the cool kids or some "different take" on the look just to gin up interest in Tuesday night games in the dead of January. -
I don't have a link or any official info but I am basically positive that they're not switching back. The whole point of the switch was so that teams could wear their thirds at home in front of the fans without all this extra coordination going on - they're not going to reintroduce all the thirds and then revert back to the old way.
-
I don't know what the actual rule says, so I don't have any opinion. If it's written that "anything goes on the last lap" then they screwed Smith. I doubt there's any such rule....I suspect the real wrong came when NASCAR allowed that interpretation to be understood in the garage.....especially if they (as I read, didn't see for myself) allowed such a move to happen in a couple of the truck races.

The Atlanta Falc- Thrashers' third jerseys unveiled!
betterREDthandead replied to Cern's topic in General
Hopefully never. What do we need with one? Basketball jersey was the first thing that popped into my head. Not at all surprised to see I'm not the only one. I actually think it would look pretty damn good if they had the oval-ish Thrasher logo, which I like, instead of the basketball motif. The shoulder logo is cool, cause it's like a stripe, but it's a logo.....whoa. I dig that. Wouldn't look good on the front though. But I'm glad the T-shaped logo is gone. Never liked it. So big thumbs-up to the design - should probably be their primary home. It's way better than the baby blue with the silly lopsided shoulder. That shade of blue comes from the middle of the old T-shaped logo, which is now gone - the oval-ish logo has just a thin tiny stripe of that color. It's sort of dumb, like if the Sharks came out with a garish orange jersey just because the logo has that color in the eyes. Just.....lose the basketball look. -
Didn't say I was off it yet I'm sticking with my original plan of eight weeks. I'll see where I am after that, because I do think from what I've seen so far, diet + exercise + Hydroxycut is taking the weight off faster than diet and exercise alone. I'll see how I feel about it after Halloween when the eight weeks is up - definitely won't do another full eight weeks, that would really be pushing up against the edge of the doc's advice. But if over the course of eight or ten weeks it's worth those extra few lost pounds, it's worth it to me.
-
Nice! I wish I could have that kind of luck. 13 pounds since May - not that impressive. Here's a note for all of those tracking my progress on the Hydroxycut. (OK, there's one of you anyway.) Make sure if you go to see the doctor you tell him about it. I went in to see the doctor today about my allergies and as part of the standard doctor routine he took my blood pressure and was fairly alarmed until I told him about the Hydroxycut. Apparently someone my age is supposed to have around 120/70 or so and I was up at like 145/90. Pretty high. He said don't take it for more than like three or four months - as of now I've been on it about five weeks. It seems to be working to bring the weight under control, but per the doctor's advice I'll be off it by Thanksgiving, hopefully by which time I can be right around 170 pounds, just in time to gorge myself over the holidays.
