And yet it would still be a better idea than Winnipeg. Or some of this nonsense like Maine.

Regina? Saskatoon? How about Wausau, Wisconsin? DeKalb, Illinois? Ooh! Cedar Rapids! Marquette! Bemidji, Minnesota. And the worst part is, there's some of you who think I'm not joking. Come on people. Saskatoon is a viable major league market like Peru is a hockey nation. Corporate support my ass.....the problem is NOBODY LIVES THERE! Even Winnipeg. I can think of about 25 American markets off the top of my head that would make better choices than Winnipeg. Here I go: Milwaukee, Seattle, Houston, Las Vegas, Houston, New Orleans, Hartford, Albany, Grand Rapids, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Kansas City, Wichita, Omaha, Portland, Sacramento, Indianapolis, Louisville, Baltimore, Providence, Austin, Orlando, Jacksonville, Salt Lake City. There. 24 markets with literally hundreds of thousands more people than Winnipeg - in some cases over a million more - and far better corporate support than Winnipeg can offer. Winnipeg is NOT a viable NHL market and never was.

That's revenue, not profit. About as viable as one in Tijuana. Hockey might be popular....among the 10 or so people that live in NDak. Seriously.....the entire state has less people in it than the Grand Rapids metro, by over 100,000. Fargo is just a bit larger than Flint. It'll never happen.

Heavens no, KC is known for barbeque but it's not a redneck town. Maybe a cowboy town but that's not the same thing. Nashville's way more redneck than KC. The reason people talk it up is because KC has a brand new arena and has been offering sweetheart deals to teams to move there; first the Pens, then the Preds. Quebec City, Halifax, and the entire northeast are nowhere near populated enough. The only real population center is Boston. Maine is WAY too small. Newfoundland is practically empty. The South is the fastest-growing part of the country. Atlanta's huge. The only team I really actively want to see move is the Panthers. Miami sucks as a sports town and the Panthers could get a boost by moving somewhere. Houston or Seattle would be my choices, though KC and the nice arena deal would be good too.

Holland: Wings will wait until Sept. for D trade
betterREDthandead replied to Matt's topic in General
Honestly, if there's a trade, I don't care whether it's Meech, Quincey, or Lebda. Trade the one that'll bring back the highest draft pick. -
Then what the hell does being a Leafs fan have anything to do with it? "I wonder how you'd react if you were Leafs fan...", what is that nonsense? Yep, I'd still hate Burke. Again, for possible comprehension: If what Lowe did was truly that ridiculous, then the rest of the league would have agreed, and not signed players to higher salaries.
-
They might be slightly improved. But when Kristian Huselius is your big FA splash, you're just spinning your wheels. I don't think they're a playoff team yet.
-
What the hell does me being a Wings fan have to do with Burke? Just because he's on the Ducks and you assume I hate everything Duckish? I hate Burke because he runs dirty teams. He was a useless disciplinarian who handed out unbelievably light penalties, and his Vancouver Canucks were one of the dirtiest teams, if not the dirtiest, in the league. Bertuzzi on Moore, Marc Crawford who's just a dirty coach, Bryan Allen and his knee-on-knee hits....while Burke was the Canucks GM, they were a bush-league outfit. Now Anaheim is the same way. I don't hate Burke because he's a Duck and Wings fans hate the Ducks. I hate the Ducks because of Burke. I think it's funny that you blame one person for "overpaying". If Lowe really was a terrible GM and overpaying players, don't you think the rest of the league would agree rather than playing follow-the-leader? Also there's this: That's whining, pure and simple. What right does he have to get a warning? Think anyone's going to give Ken Holland fair warning if they sign Flip to an offer sheet?
-
Except, because of the cap, it's not a slippery-slope thing. The teams that threw money at people are finding out what a waste it was. And obviously it didn't have much impact on the Wings. We're not out there tossing silly money at Jeff Finger. Burke got burned and now he's whining about it. Lowe will realize he got burned too if Penner doesn't produce, but all in good time. Besides, it happened over a year ago. How about if Burke focuses on his own team instead of bitching all the time? P.S.: I hate Burke for other reasons besides just this. It's not Wings bias. If it were just this I wouldn't hate Burke, but there's more to him.

My heart bleeds for these other teams

Burke, as usual, is a piece of s***. And so is whoever wrote that article; it is nothing more than a Burke soapbox and it's terrible journalism.

Do the Recent Signings get Butts in the Seats this Year?
betterREDthandead replied to Firehawk's topic in General
Marian Hossa isn't really a household name. Not that anyone in hockey really is, but he's not a butts-in-the-seats guy. Now, the defending Stanley Cup champions, that's what ought to fill the seats. Much better than "oh here we go doing pretty good but losing in the playoffs again." -
Not the letter, the number.

Agreed, except I think Sammy more than Stuart. In fact Sammy most of the time, Stuart hardly at all. Babcock likes having Sammy out there. Take Stuart off (which I think will happen) and you know what's missing? Canadians. Weird.

Do like Brett Hull did when #16 wasn't available....just add 1. oh wait..........

ESPN's Scott Burnside's Instant Analysis
betterREDthandead replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Put it this way, people who don't have Pavel and Hank on their team think Hossa is an excellent two-way forward. Kind of like how if you're Tampa and you don't already have Nick Lidstrom to compare to, you think Dan Boyle is a top-notch defenseman. So he's pretty good and he'll definitely fit right in. Just not quite Selke stuff. -
Better "GMing" this offseason because of the cap. But in terms of sheer awesomeness for the fans and the holy-s***-look-who-we-just-got moments that we live for, 2001 will never be topped.
-
That'd only happen if Flip signed for like 6 million. In Flip's actual salary range we'd get like a 2nd and a 3rd.
-
There's just enough space to get Flip signed and leave some room for the trade deadline too. Zetterberg's extension won't kick in til next year, and the cap should be up another few million by then. In fact if it goes up as much as it did this year, then there may be room for Zetterberg AND Hossa.
-
It still doesn't quite compare to 2001 - picking up Hasek, Hull, and Robitaille. Nothing beats that. But this is nice

ubbudygooobdedyhoobajoobaWHAT??!?!?!! wow.....never has being wrong been so much fun!

For having Jeff Finger on their roster Those quotes are pure awesome.

News article. Looks like the competition between Howard and Conklin will be more about Conklin not sucking rather than Howard playing well. Holland loves burning up every last minor league option he's got on a player.
