    young guns game

I also hate the idea of awarding home ice to the ASG winner. Some random goal scored by a Los Angeles King should not have an effect on the Stanley Cup Finals.

    Technical Shootout Question

Why would he not be eligible? Why wouldn't they make him change gear? "That's just silly" won't cut it.....looks to me, under the rules, that he'd be eligible to shoot, and in fact would have no choice but to change gear and take his shots if the shootout goes that long.

    young guns game

With help from the excellent cap tracker right here on LGW, Flip is the only Wing on his entry-level contract. And as an official Valtteri Filppula Fan, I would love to see him play in the young stars game.

    Is Ozzie a HOFer?

And is still top 15 all time in wins and will approach, if not pass, 400. I don't think splitting time should cost him - look who he's split with. Mike Vernon and Dominik Hasek - not shabby goalies. The only exception is Legace, and it's pretty obvious now that sitting Ozzie and starting Legace during that Edmonton series was a colossal mistake.

    hudler-filppula-cleary-franzen

If this were the old days it wouldn't even be a question - we'd just keep them all at whatever number we felt like paying them.

If I HAD to pick between those four - Franzen. Flip must be a Wing for life. Cleary is extremely valuable on the PK, IMO. Rex is really picking up the playmaking skills. I'd hate to lose Franzen as well, but I think he brings the least to the table. Definitely not a playmaker - decent finisher, but not a playmaker. Good as a grinder, but you can find those elsewhere, Flip and Cleary are hustle-types too, and they tend to bring in more goals. Although, I think the Wings have quite a bit of defensive depth below the big club, and not as much forward depth, so really, out of the guys you mentioned, Lebda's the most expendable, not a forward.

    Is Ozzie a HOFer?

If you take the top 20 goalies in all-time wins (and currently Ozzie is tied for 15th), Ozzie's GAA is better than all but three of them (Brodeur, Plante, and Hasek.) Some of the goalies he's currently better than: Roy, Belfour, Sawchuk, Fuhr, Hall, Vachon, Esposito, Worsley. That's a hell of a list. Save percentage stacks up favorably too. Grant Fuhr's, for example, is a terrible .887. I don't care if he did play in a high-scoring era: if the 80's were so high-scoring because goalies were that bad, then there shouldn't be any goalies from that era in the HoF. Ozzie should be able to hit 400 wins by the time he's done. 400 wins, at least two Cups (hopefully more), and his other goalie numbers should put him in, IMO. He was never really thought of as the era's best goalie, but in the end the numbers should tell the tale.

    Eastern All-Stars

With so many Wings and Senators at the game they oughta award a point in the standings to Detroit or Ottawa for a win.

    You're thinking of Balsillie.

1/10 GDT: Wild 6, Red Wings 5 (SO)

Can't complain too much about any game where you earn a point. Ozzie could have been a tad better. Then again, the backchecking could have been a tad better too - man oh man did he get hung out to dry on Fedoruk's goal. Still, a point's a point, and we now have 70, and the fact that there's almost as much separation between #1 and #2 as there is between #2 and #15 is RIDICULOUS. 16 points between #1 Wings and #2 Stars....12 points between #2 Stars and #14 Oilers. Gonna be a fun race to the playoffs, and we get to munch popcorn and let 'em duke it out.

    Great Game

Thanks! And we hope you'll be back. Fans of teams around the league are always welcome at LGW.

    Massive brawl

Yeah, agreed. That team in white (my Russian is nonexistent, but from the jerseys and the labels on the page, it was AK Bars Kazan, wasn't it?) is a bunch of punk-ass *******. Whole thing started cause two of their guys decided to gang up on the guy in black just for scoring a goal. This is why the NHL has that rule about leaving the bench.

Cause then we'd be down 4-1, silly.

    I'm confused. Didn't we just win a game 1-0?

Flip with yet another of his patented hustle-and-desire goals.

Osgood Named to West All-Star Team

Which is RETARDED in my opinion. HATE that. The ASG is just an exhibition. It means nothing. (Or it should.) It's just a fun little sideshow? Why would you not want to have as many people watching as possible?

    McCarty meets with Red Wings

Huge difference between Ozzie and Mac. Mac spent his whole career hitting people as hard as he could, smashing faces with his fists, and generally playing with the restraint of a train wreck. Add to that, the whole time he was living the hard-drinking, hard-partying lifestyle of a rock star, complete with guitar. His body is way more beat up than most of these guys at 35.

    Next Year

Correction. We have six defensemen that are NHL ready, because they are playing regularly in the NHL. We have several defensemen in GR that you think are NHL ready. And given your opinion of Lilja and the fact that your best argument is "LOLLLL ******", maybe it shouldn't surprise you that I don't exactly trust your evaluation of the rest of them. I'll stop using big words like "capisce", it strikes me that you might not know what it means. Here's another question. If Lilja's that awful, and we have a full stable of "NHL-ready" prospects, why didn't Lilja get cut and Quincey or Meech take his spot during training camp?

    Next Year

Trade bait? Injuries? Unexpected heart problems? Lots of reasons. If you keep putting them off for aging defensemen, then the aging defensemen must be pretty damn good, right? And you answered your own question. "Nothing is a guarantee." I guarantee Chelios, Lilja, and Lebda are good quality defensemen who can contribute to the Wings. However, I cannot guarantee Meech and Quincey are. Capisce? See why we don't shove the regulars aside for the prospects? Lilja cost us a Stanley Cup OK, you keep believing that. I suppose you never notice when someone turns the puck over to us, or keep track of who did it....only when Lilja turns it over.

    Craig Leipold buys Minnesota Wild

I doubt Minnesota faithful will be too pleased either.

    Craig Leipold buys Minnesota Wild

By what logic? Stop putting words in my mouth. I called you out for calling Minneapolis a small market, which it is not, and I never, ever, ever linked it to hockey viability. And yes, Seattle would be a great location for the Preds. Way you see it, there are only a couple major markets in the country. If 2 million more is not much, then even Detroit is not a major market (4.4 million.) Neither is Boston, Atlanta, or San Francisco.
  22. betterREDthandead

    Craig Leipold buys Minnesota Wild

2 million more people! That's not "that much bigger"? Nashville's only four spots and 200,000 more than Grand Rapids. Minny is the size of Nashville and Kansas City combined.

    Next Year

Precisely. The whole point of having prospects is that you have a good chance of having a quality player in the future. But knowing you've got a quality player now is better than maybe having one later. Right now the Wings have the best defense in the league, why change for the sake of change? I think next year's defense will look exactly like this year's, unless Lilja or Lebda are shipped off in a trade. Lilja is not "awful". If people would look around the NHL a bit, I think they'd find that Lilja is one of the best 3rd-pair defensemen in the league.

Shoot Out skills competition to be judged now?

Amen. Yes, the dunk competition is stupid. For every dunk successfully pulled off, 10 fail miserably. Who cares? A fight competition might sound interesting, but staged fights are no fun, and there's no sense risking injury like that at the All-Star Game.

    What's in a name ?

Minnesota Northern Lights would have been pretty cool actually. I hate names that aren't pluralized. You can become a Red Wing, but what are you if you're traded to Minny?
