You have to factor in the relative strength of the rest of the PP unit between Minny's 1st and our 2nd. Simply bombing away isn't going to cut it. The PKers won't have Gaborik and Demitra to worry about.
-
Again, if it's going to improve (if it is even a problem) it stands a far better chance of improving in Detroit. And that goes far beyond just Bedard. The lockerroom as a whole as compared to the one in GR.
-
Clearly. You would think, but we've got half a dozen better options than Sammy, and yet he's still there.
-
He still wouldn't be the primary option on the 1st PP unit's point bombing away. Rolston's numbers would take a significant hit in Detroit.
-
The actual numbers are irrelevant, but the point remains the same. Rolston was a big fish in Minnesota. That would not be the case in Detroit.
-
Schneider was out there because that's the one and only thing he's good at. If Babcock puts a forward on the point, he's going to be a righty because a lefty is not going to budge Nick, Raf, or Nik from their spots. Period. Nick, Raf, and Nik is hardly a weakness. We'd be better off with Stuart or Meech on that 4th spot, but again, Babcock is a bit stubborn about ideas he picked up as a Cincy Duck.

Stands a far better chance of improving in Detroit than in Grand Rapids.

Ray Whitney. Big fish, small pond. Small fish, big pond.
-
So keep him in Detroit full time so he can work with Bedard every day. If the Wings were strong enough to carry Dom's creaky carcass through the regular season they can smooth out some growing pains on Jimmy's part.
-
My point with Sammy is that he's a right-handed shot. Rolston isn't. Babcock wants righty/lefty on the PP point. He's so stubborn on this issue that Sammy, who sucks on the point, is still on the ******* point. Rolston is not going to budge Nick, Raf, Nik, or Sammy from the points on the PP. That's where 39 of his goals from the last three seasons have come from. One in a string of many reasons why Rolston won't be nearly as good in Detroit as many people hope he might be. Diminished role, diminished returns.
-
Hudler and Sammy had their roles on the 2nd unit locked down all season long. Sammy is comletely meh and mostly infuriating on the PP, but Hudler along with Kronwall run the 2nd unit. Those two along with Franzen in the crease make the 2nd unit viable. He's still not a good fit because he's more of the same. Like trying to add Campbell on the blueline. Pointless and just a waste of money. Wrister? Rolston is all slapper. He lets the slapper rip on breakaways and shootouts.

Probably would have been that other guy they were thinking about drafting. I believe it was a defenseman.
-
Jonny was a 9th rounder.

Hossa is the better player, but it is impossible to sign him for one season.
-
The Chara/Redden thing was the year after Hossa was traded away. Murray had those two talked into take $6M/yr each if they'd both stay. Chara bolted for $7.5M/yr from Boston. Hossa was traded the year before after he signed a 3 year $6M/yr (average) contract. He got blindsided by the trade. Murray, at the time, was using Alfredsson's $4.5M/yr cap hit as an internal cap for his forwards. Though obviously that went out the window when Spezza and Heatley came around. Hossa signed a very fair deal and got screwed.
-
Take your time, Kenny. A year and 4 days and you won't have to worry about that pesky tagging rule...
-
If you take Homer away from Z and Pavel you may as well trade him as he'd be useless.
-
I'd take Yzerman over Messier.
-
One year and one year only. And that's only if there's no way we can sign Hossa. Sundin is the #2 option for me. Sundin is a significantly better player than Rolston so I agree that age is moot.
-
Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom Lidstrom - Rafalski Certainty. Franzen is a 2nd tier player.
-
Good thing that's at least $1M high for Fil. Who is bashing? He'll turn 36 this season and the biggest asset he brings is speed. It's foolish to assume he'll keep the wheels as he's approaching 40.
-
Apart from the whole being a 2nd liner (on our team) looking for first line money for multiple years. That's a horrible fit. Speed is the first thing that goes with age. Woe be the team that signs Rolston for 3 years and expects the wheels to be there throughout. Except that 4 of our 2nd unit are locked in tight. Franzen is the Homer. Hudler is the Datsyuk. Kronner is the Lidstrom. Sammy is the Raf. If all four are healthy they won't budge off the second unit. The only potential spot for Rolston is that 3rd forward spot that he'd share with Filppula and Cleary who I'm sure you've noticed Babcock loves like sons. All the spots Rolston would want to fill are already occupied. Which is why he's a bad fit for us.
-
He'd make our 2nd PP, but not the 1st like he's used to. My argument is that Rolston would be an expensive 2nd tier player and thus a pointless acquisition. If you agree, good.
-
Do you even know why Sammy is on the point? Bolded is more deliciousness regarding strawmen. Hudler and Franzen are most definitely standouts on the PP. And Sammy is on the point with Nik. Rolston is an all-around bad fit for Detroit. He's not significantly better than anyone he'd be replacing yet he's going to be $2-3M/yr more expensive. People need to get this notion that just because someone is from Michigan and/or they played at one of the two big schools that they're are automatically good for Detroit to pursue.
-
Except the Wings. Datsyuk - Zetterberg - Holmstrom. Rolston isn't bumping any of those. Franzen - Filppula - Cleary. These are Babcock's golden boys. Good luck, Brian! The Wings are the last place Rolston should look unless he wants to be a 3rd liner and ride coattails to a shot at the Cup. He's a solid player on a weak team, but there aren't any teams out there deeper than us.
