  3. 2 Questions looking ahead... An easy prediction of next year's lineup is below. Would you be happy if this is what we have next year? How does this team stack up against other top teams. Top 5? Either yes or no. Lets try to just look at the bigger picture instead of getting into the smaller details. Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) Tomas Holmstrom ($1.200m) Jiri Hudler ($2.880m) Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) Johan Franzen ($3.955m) Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) Darren Helm ($1.000m) Todd Bertuzzi ($1.750m) Patrick Eaves ($0.800m) Kris Draper ($1.583m) Justin Abdelkader ($0.900m) Mattias Ritola ($0.600m) Kirk Maltby ($0.500m) Nicklas Lidstrom ($4.500m) Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) Brian Rafalski ($6.000m) Brad Stuart ($3.750m) Andreas Lilja ($1.000m) Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) Jimmy Howard ($0.717m) Chris Osgood ($1.417m) ROSTER: 23; PAYROLL: $55.918m; CAP ROOM: $0.882m BONUSES: $0.000m

Questions about potential next year's roster

In this scenario, I have the cap staying even. I have the max amount of players at 23. I have almost 900k in capspace. The cap will more than likely go up (albeit, not alot). We don't have to carry 23, so you can drop another .5-1 mil. And we don't need to carry extra capspace....... SO..... don't worry too much about the small details. That roster will fit under the cap. If you don't believe me, just play along for fun. But yes, i might be off a couple hundred grand here or there.
  5. Firstly, regarding people talking about some low number in the 4's for Hossa, I don't remember anything like that. I read most all articles on the wings and I don't recall that. Maybe I'm wrong. If we could have had him for 4.3 and we didn't, well that's just ******* crazy. The only thing I remember reading like that was articles put out saying that if he wanted to be a wing, he would have to accept something in Franzen's ballpark. It was journalist's speculation, but then again, maybe he mentioned his price and i missed it. I'd bet it would have cost at least 5. So, anyways... abotu this thread, it's not a straight hossa vs. flip. It's..... Hossa (5), min wager scrub (0.5), min wager scrub (0.5) vs Filppula (3) Bertuzzi (1.5) Williams (1.5) 6 mil in salaries and 3 forward roster spots

Questions about potential next year's roster

Grand Rapids??? Philadelphia??? Anahiem??? And yeah probably..... Homer has 17 goals, Bert has 15. Both will be 20 goal scorers this year. Holmstrom is 37, still very effective but on his last legs, he's played and succeeded with us since ummm i don't know, say 1996. He's not looking for the best offer. He'll come back and play one more year. He'll do it under marketvalue. Bertuzzi, whether or not we like him this week, he'll get at least what he gets this year. For the record, if you can have a 20 goal scorer on your 3rd line for 1.75 million, you don't complain. Most others that fit the bill are on entry level contracts that we're drafted higher than we're used to. But if it makes it easier to concentrate, pretend the 2 numbers are switched. So, aside from not having Brad Norton instead of Ritola, do you like the team?

Maltby back for one more year?

We're coming to an end of an era.... Lidstrom, Osgood, Draper, Holmstrom, Maltby. All important core pieces of the success we've enjoyed the last decade. Fortunately (and maybe luckily (hitting the jackpot with Dats and Zett)) we'll continue to enjoy success for many years. Ozzie and Draper have 1 more year left and will be on the team next year. The others are without a contract. Lidstrom is still Lidstromish. Holmstrom is still Holmstromish. Maltby is still Maltbyish. What I hope happens is they collectively decide to all go one more year. Go out as a group. Tell the media about it, make a big deal about it. Do it on the cheap. One more run for the cup. And if there's any players on the team that can't get up giving 100% for trying to get these guys a last cup...... punch them in the face. So, yeah. I hope Maltby comes back one more. He may see his fair share of press box but who cares. He'll be a wing and be ready when called upon.

    Trim 2 million

So if Lilja is back.... we are exactly ($1,994,543) 2 million over the cap. We would have a 25 man roster, so we have to lose 2 players. You could go 3 if you wanted to. We currently (once healthy) have 15 forwards, 8 defencemen, and 2 goalies. What would you do? Bolded combinations work. Other ones don't. Williams and Leino = 2.3 Williams and Lebda = 2.15 Williams and May = 2 Williams and Meech = 1.983 Lilja and Maltby = 2.133 Lilja and Leino = 2.05 Lilja and Lebda = 1.9 Lilja and May = 1.75 Lilja and Meech = 1.733 Lilja, May and Meech = 2.233 Maltby, Leino and Meech = 2.166 Maltby, Lebda and Meech = 2.016 Leino, Lebda and Miller = 1.975 Leino, Lebda, and May = 1.95 Leino, Lebda and Meech = 1.933 Leino, May and Meech = 1.765 Here's our bottom priced guys for your reference Kris Draper — $1,583,333 Jason Williams — $1,500,000 Todd Bertuzzi — $1,500,000 Andreas Lilja — $1,250,000 Jonathan Ericsson — $900,000 Kirk Maltby — $883,000 Ville Leino — $800,000 Brett Lebda — $650,000 Darren Helm — $599,000 Drew Miller — $525,000 Brad May — $500,000 Patrick Eaves — $500,000 Derek Meech — $483,000 I can't see any of the bolded getting moved, but who knows. So what do you do? Or do you go off the board and make another move? If so... please share. This is a tough decision and it's definitely down to small money making a difference.

oh no all good. I could easily be misunderstanding things. But those daily numbers are the same as the full year numbers just broken down by day. 193 of them. When you add up those 3 players daily hits it doesn't add up to our daily overage. I believe when you save cap space earlier in the year it changes things. I'm not sure how though. For this season it doesn't matter as we've been at the cap all year. The fact we got may and miller late doesn't help as we've been over the cap all year.

done and done eh? You're oozing with confidence. Myself... Somewhat confident but not at the done and done level. I think you're wrong. Can we get a knowledgable 3rd party to settle this as it's makes a difference to what options we have. I hope you're right Steve. Unfortunately, I doubt it

    Kovalchuk traded to New Jersey

Yeah, no doubt. It's just damn difficult to fit Kovi in without removing that 6 mil. Kovi or Rafalski? Know what I mean? Easy decision. Especially with the surplus of offensive dmen we have. I'm thinking if the price is kronwall and flip, I say hope he's available come July and not gut the team this deadline. I can barely stomach the prospect of losing Flip, let alone any more core pieces. I do admit, I have visions of a new Russian 5.

    Kovalchuk traded to New Jersey

Fil, Will, Ville and Rafalski for Kovalchuk and Afinogenov Too much, eh? And yes, I know about his NTC. Does he want to play in Atlanta or Grand Rapids? For Atlanta, that's a complete forward line that works to just plug in. And an elite quarterback #1-2 Dman for 2 years. 11.3 million though might be a tad too much. Then again they were gonna pay Ilya 8 mil or so anyway. Might need a second trade to offload Rafalski for assets then use them to aquire the Atlanta package. I just know I'm not interested in losing both Flip and Kronwall. Ericsson neither.

Even if there was no such thing as Andreas Lilja we still had to move salary to fit in Franzen. A smidge under 800k. And yeah, Maltby aint going anywhere.

I like it. Enough skill to play with the Wings. Move Cleary up. Bert down and that could be a decent skill line. Bert, Comrie, Miller Whatever's gonna happen it'll happen soon. Almost 800k has to be moved out for Franzen to play Tuesday. Bye Leino?

You might be on to something there. You'd have 1.455 to fill the spot. Any ideas someone available that would fit?
  16. Leadzedder

    Kovalchuk traded to New Jersey

We have 0 cap space. If Franzen and Lilja don't come back this season we have accrued a million in cap space, which translates to a 3 million dollar player at the deadline. Franzen and Lilja are coming back. We have 0 cap space. When it comes to matters of the cap, I'm right everytime 60% of the time. But really, I'm pretty sure that's how it is.

Oh, but no so quick. Leino 800k Lebda 650k May 500k $1,950,000 We are 1,995,000 over. Try again. But yeah, I agree. If it would work, I'd do that too.

    Trim 2 million

Ok.... I can believe that. Makes sense. So whether it's broken down daily or not the numbers are the same as the original post. $10,340 times 193 days and we're back to 1.995 mil over (or $10,340 per day) So we should just use Miller's, May's and Helm's full amounts. So what's the actual rule? Can't be over the daily amount at any point in the season (not including LTIR) or at season's end? That doesn't seem to jive. If a team (not us this year) had accrued say a mill in cap space they could get a 3 mil player at the deadline. We all know that's doable, but that would give the team a higher daily amount after the deadline. Money not spent goes into a 'cap bank' and you can add that to your daily spending?

post deleted due to it being wrong information. I had thought we had a bit more wiggle room with prorated cap amounts for Miller, May and Helm. Looks like I was wrong. We've been at the cap all season long. The cap is calculated daily so prorated amounts don't come into play. $1.995m is the magic number. Trim away.

Yeah I'm not sure the list either. As an aside, I think LA had first grab at Quincey. In hindsight alot of other teams wished they had of offered up a late pick.

When a player is waived there is a sequence or list or whatever the word is of teams that get a chance to claim that player. Not every team is first on that list. Only one actually.... so if you're team 10 or 15 on the waiver list you're not getting Leino or Williams or whoever. Therefore if you want that player, you must trade for him. But you're right.... the first team to be able to put a claim in probably won't trade for him. They'll just hope he hits waivers. Clear? Everyone knows Chicago has to move bodies in the offseason. I say Holland keeps his 7th rounder and just claims Sharp and Versteeg off waivers..... see what I'm saying. The Quincey thing may actually help.... teams might think.... hmm... Detroit's junk aint too bad.

What a mess of bad information that is. Not saying that i know what's right or wrong, but that's a whole lot of guessing in there. It gets clearer towards the end. If i understand things correctly, we haven't accrued jack for cap space. Been over the cap since day 1. All our callups have been covered by LTI exemption. That's why some of our guys that were out weren't placed on long term cause it didn't help anything. We already had enough room for call ups with Lilja and Franzen. The only thing I'm fuzzy on is whether Miller and May count as full amounts or prorated amounts. I'd say prorated as we didn't have them all year. Definitely prorated for the end of year calculation. But this daily spending thing... how does it affect that. I'm guessing again.... prorated?
